Pipe Suspended Under Bridge in South Africa Renewed

Nu Flows pipe renewal solutions are proven effective and versatile time and time again. When a pipe suspended
under a bridge in South Africa needed repair, the customer turned to Nu Flow South Africa to fix the problem and
prevent the likelihood of a reoccurring issue.

Customer and Site: Sarel Cilliers Bridge (aka Wawiel Bridge) over Vals River in Kroonstad, Free State, South
Africa, built in 1941.
System: 96 meters of 230mm steel potable water pipe suspended under the bridge and over Vals River.
Situation: In 1988, trees got caught underneath the bridge by the weir and formed a dam causing the river to rise
until it covered the surface of the bridge. During this time, a tree floated into the water pipe causing a dent in a
section of the pipe. Over time this dented section began to rust and eventually leak. When Nu Flow arrived on site
there were multiple sections of the pipe leaking with the dented section having the worst damage.
Circumvention: A traditional pipe replacement would have been complicated due to the fact the pipe is suspended
under the bridge and over the river.
Solution: The customer turned to Nu Flow South Africa to take control of the situation and solve the problem. Nu
Flow had to first remove the bitumen lining (an oil based substance) inside the pipe before being able to reline the
pipe with Nu Drain.
Once the pipe was cleaned of the bitumen lining, Nu Flow relined the pipe with a structural liner saturated in Nu Flow
patented potable water epoxy creating a new pipe within the host pipe.
Nu Flows patented trenchless lining system involves double-entry access to pull an epoxy-saturated felt liner with
an internal bladder inside host pipe. The bladder is inflated for curing in place and is later removed, leaving in its
place a smooth, jointless new pipe inside the host pipe.
This lining method provides the ability to line multiple 45 and 90 angles, as well as the option of lining specific
sections of pipe without lining the entire length.
