Status and Role of Women

YOU ARE A QUEEN SUNDAY
One March 22, 2015, the Status and Role will host a
special morning worship service entitled You Are A
Queen. W omen of all ages
who are products
through the love and support of Francis Burns United
Methodist Church who have blazed a trail, made a
name for themselves, successful in their professions, or
still in school pursuing their degrees, have been invited
to come back home. The church has released a lot of
powerful, wonderful, Godly women in the world and we
could not be prouder! Our young women and girls are
looking to us to be examples of what they can be.
Thank you to the congregation for providing the names
and contact information for the invitees for this
special service.
A small reception will follow the
service.
GIRL TALK
A quarterly Girl Talk will begin on March 29 at 5pm.
In order to combat some of the issues facing women
and girls, we have to open a dialogue and form a
community of support for each other. These talks will
be led by Dr. Evelyn Fulmore every 5th Sunday. All
women and girls of all ages are invited. If you plan to
attend, the reading material is available for the first
session in the fellowship hall near the bulletin board.
The first session is entitled What You Have Is Enough
For God.

Follow Up to
The Bishops Road Show
Nancy Bradshaw, Lay Leader
In last months edition of The Burns Connection, I
reported that 10 members of the congregation
attended The Bishops Road Show over at Shandon
UMC. We discussed talking with Rev. Etheredge
about having a church meeting to share some
information with the congregation. However, after
prayerful consideration, I decided that the church
newsletter might be the better avenue for sharing
some of this information.
Here are some of the topics discussed:
How can members get copies of The 2012 Book of
Discipline of the United Methodist Church? The Book
of Discipline of the United Methodist Church is the
instrument used for setting forth the laws, plans,
policies and processes by which all United Methodists
govern themselves. Our General Conference is held
every 4 years and The Book of Discipline is updated
after that gathering to reflect any changes voted on.
The next General Conference will be held next year,
2016. Copies of The Book of Discipline can be
purchased at Cokesbury.com.
Who is the lay leader? My name is Nancy Bradshaw
and I am honored to currently serve as lay leader for
Francis Burns UMC. Duties of the Lay Leader include
membership on Church Council, Finance Committee,
S/PPRC and Lay Leadership Committee.
Other
responsibilities
include
advocacy,
modeling
Discipleship, celebrating the ministry of the laity,
assisting the Church Council and meeting with the
pastor. (The Book of Discipline 2012 paragraph
#251)
We also have: Lay Members to Annual Conference
who are our delegates to our South Carolina Annual
Conference.
And Lay Servants who are persons
who have been called to develop skills in witnessing
to
the
Christian
faith
through
spoken
communication, church and community leadership
and caregiving ministry. Persons that are interested
in this ministry must meet with, and be
recommended by the pastor. They must also attend
training.
What is our church structure? Are we using the
Administrative Board/ Council on Ministries or are we
using the Church Council structure? -As of January,
2013 we moved to the Church Council structure.
Please see the enclosed chart showing the current
members of our Church Council. We encourage and
invite each member of the congregation to consider
serving in a leadership position or to contact a
current chairperson to serve on their committee.
Each position is for one year, but at the
recommendation of the Committee on Lay
Leadership/ Nominations, persons can serve in the
same position for a maximum of 3 years unless

otherwise stated in The Book of Discipline.

Church School (Sunday School)/ Bible Study- We need
you! There is a Church School class for each of ustoddlers through adults of all ages.
Each Sunday
morning at 9:00 a.m. there is a class waiting for you.
Our Bible Study classes meet at various days and times
during the week. Ollie Benners is our chairperson of
Christian Education and would be happy to talk with you
about Church School and Bible Study.
Strengthening our Prayer Ministry As Nettie Green
stated, No Prayer, No Power. It is our desire that
Francis Burns United Methodist Church be a powerful
House of Prayer. There are prayer request cards in the
pew pockets. We encourage everyone to use the prayer
cards to request specific prayers or the general pray for
me requests. We also have a prayer room on the lower
level.
Maybe you would like to start your worship
experience there before going to Church School, or
before the worship service begins, or anytime during the
week. The family that prays together, stays together.
There is plenty good work for us all. It is our prayerful
desire to have everyone involved in ministry. What is
God calling you to do?
We need all children 5-12 to sing on the childrens
choir,(3-12) participate with our dance ministry, attend
Church school, Children Ministry programs, participate
in Childrens Church, serve as Acolytes as age
appropriate, participate in Vacation Bible School during
the summer, Scouting Ministry as age appropriate and
other church programs that are available.
We need all youths (13-18) to participate in all youth
activities including singing on the Youth Choir, working
with the Junior Ushers, Acolytes, dance ministry, mime
ministry attending church school, Bible study, Childrens
sermons, volunteering with other church ministries and
other church programs that are available.
We need all of our adults (young adults 19-30) (adults
31-54) (older adults 55+) to identify your ministry of
interest (ushers, sound booth, choir, homeless ministry
through Missions, any of the ministries that come under
Nurture, Outreach and Witness, Lay Servants, Working
with Childrens Church, Church Nursery, Vacation Bible
School, Church School, Childrens sermons, prayer
ministry, attending Church School, Bible study, etc.

As the Lenten Season continues

(February 18, 2015 Ash
Wednesday) we are reminded
that Jesus Christ is preparing to
face His death in Jerusalem. The
approach to the Lenten Season
is a time for each of us to
discover how fasting, prayer,
repentance and remorse play an
important
role
in
the
development of our spiritual journeys. After all, the road
to salvation and repentance must begin with our
personal inward search of self to discover who we are in
Christ Jesus.
In St. Matthew 21:1-11, The events leading up to Jesus
entrance into Jerusalem are recorded. When we read
this scripture, often we are caught up in the things
around Jesus and His two disciples. Therefore, we miss
the central point of the text, Jesus preparation for the
cross. Prior to this, Jesus retreated to the wilderness
and spent time fasting, contemplating, reflecting and
preparing for the events that would come. Change is
very important for our spiritual journey. Winston
Churchill said:
To improve is to change,
to be perfect is to change often.

Blessings to all.

Missions
Ministry
has
been
encouraged and inspired by your
strong, unwavering support of
Missions Programs and activities
over the years.

During the Lenten Season for 2015 (Wednesday,

February 18th until Sunday, April 5th) we should be
engaged in a time of personal growth and a study of our
spiritual selves. During our daily walk of life, we are
each facing personal situations that demand us to be in
a right relationship with God and others in the Christian
faith. We should not face these situations alone. First,
we must know that God is with us and second, we ought
to have at least one Christian person that we can turn
to.
As we participate in the celebration of Lent, Holy Week,
and Easter, let us remember to set our faces toward
Jerusalem understanding that God expects and requires
something from us. Furthermore, we must believe that
His grace will provide the strength for us to do and say
the things that will keep us forever in Gods Will.

Please keep in mind that Missions

Ministry has adopted this outreach
as a permanent, year-round effort. We also shared
information with Counselors on high school summer
camp. Visit South Carolina Business Week page and
follow the link to the application for this year's camp
held July 26th-31st at Presbyterian College.

Health Notes
March 2015
The Health and Welfare Ministrys/Healthy Eating
and Living in the Spirit (H.E.A.L.S) vision for the
Francis Burns Church Family is to become A
Healthier Congregation.
In March we traditionally celebrate Womens History
Month, Women in the Pulpit Sunday, and Womens Day
at Francis Burns.
This month we along with the
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) invite you
to Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle during National Nutrition
Month by including physical activity in your
daily routine.
Each March and throughout the year, the AND
encourages everyone (particularly female) to return to
the basics of healthy eating by adopting a healthy
lifestyle focused on consuming fewer calories, making
informed food choices and getting daily exercise. The
goal is to achieve and maintain a healthy weight,
reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall
health.
"Daily physical activity is a crucial part of everyone's
healthy lifestyle, but unfortunately most of us dont
include enough movement in our daily routines," says a
spokesperson for the AND. "Regular physical activity
strengthens bones and muscles, reduces the risk of
chronic illness and fosters overall well-being."
Regular Physical Activity is a Must. M ost health
benefits come from at least 150 minutes a week of
moderately intense physical activity, with added
advantages from increased exercise and intensity.
Endurance and muscle-strengthening activities like
lifting weights, working with a resistance band or doing
pushups are also beneficial. A physically active lifestyle
offers you many rewards, from a slimmer body to a
healthy heart. Additional advantages include stress
relief, better sleep and even a more positive mental
outlook, reports the AND.
Everyday Ways to get Moving: P hysical activity is
important for everyone at every age. The key is to find
activities that are both sustainable and enjoyable. For
some, this may mean a light exercise class, while for
others it may mean training for a marathon. Bottom
line: Find manageable ways to move more.
Some suggested ways to get moving are: Use the
buddy systemjoin a walking group or attend fitness
classes; participate in social and competitive sports like
tennis or softball; plan a hiking or canoeing trip instead
of a beach vacation; sign up for one of the many run/
walk in the area with friends or family; sneak in
exercises while sitting, like leg lifts and calf raises; take
a 15-minute walk break daily; finally, find an activity
monitor to assess movement through the day gadgets
are very motivating for some!

Food is Vital for Energy:

To maintain a
physically active and healthy lifestyle, stay nourished
before, during and after exercise. Before exercise,
look for foods high in carbohydrates, adequate in
protein and moderate in fat and fiber, like oatmeal
with bananas, almonds and fat-free milk. Drink water
before, during and after physical activity since
dehydration
can
cause
fatigue
and
impair
performance.

Nutrition Month on the ANDs social media channels
including Facebook and Twitter using the #NNM
hashtag.

God and the Gaps
Melagne Yed
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then
face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know
even as also I am known. The day will come when we
will have full knowledge and full understanding of the
purposes and methods of God.
Simplicity Meets Sublimity
Luke 24:30-32. When he was at the table with them,
he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to
give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they
recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
They asked each other, Were not our hearts burning
within us while he talked with us on the road and
opened the Scriptures to us?
Jesus did not perform an extraordinary act in order to
show the disciples who he was. He used the simplicity
of an ordinary and customary act such as the breaking
of bread to open their mind to the sublimity of his resurrection. However, lets not lose sight of the fact that
Jesus didnt break the bread at the beginning. He first
gave them a lesson in history; he did the work of an
apologist (the Greek word is apologia, which means to
give an answer back as Peter admonishes in 1 Peter
3:15). Jesus said to them: How foolish you are, and
how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have
spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things
and then enter his glory? And beginning with Moses
and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was
said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. They
knew so much but had forgotten what it all meant. So
he was bridging the gaps by recalling the prophecies
to their remembrance. He was closing the gaps; connecting the dots, bringing the coherence; binding the
soul to the body. By simply taking a piece of bread,
breaking it and giving it, he resurrects in us the reality
that the physicality of the body and the spirituality of
the soul are both important and that he alone knows
how to bring the two together. And their hearts were
rising to the top. They asked each other, Were not
our hearts burning within us while he talked with us
on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?
Many will resort to deceptive means or motives, using
pleasure, power, knowledge, or even religion in order
to try to put lives together. Yet no one, or no system
of thoughts, comes even close to the way our Lord
does it. Naturalism settles for the theory of chaos;
Jesus offers coherence. Islam talks of Allah the Compassionate; but it is Jesus who went to the cross because of his compassion for the sinner. Hinduism talks
of Karma and the debt of morality; it is Jesus who
paid the price of sin and offers forgiveness. Buddhism
talks of the eradication of desire; Jesus offers to fill
those who hunger and thirst after righteousness; so
we sing, with the hymn writer, of his offer I will pour
water on him who is thirsty. I will pour floods upon

the dry ground. Open your heart for the gift I am bringing. While you are seeking Me I shall be found.
The gap is not in him. It is in us. But simplicity and sublimity will bridge it when knowledge doesnt seem to coalesce with reality, when hopes are dashed by disappointment, and when I recognize that my busy-ness can
dull his presence. He is the God who fills the gaps in distinction to the many others who create the gaps. The
problem is not in him; the problem is in us. Mind the
gap!
Last month, some of the
youth went to see a movie
called 8 Days. It was about
girls and boys getting sex
trafficked.
Watching this
movie showed us how easy
and quickly this can happen,
and how hard it is to get
back home safely. The
character in the movie went through a lot during her
eight days of being a sex slave. It all started when she
went to a party with her friend and got drunk and
drugged. She really didn't know that all of that was
going to happen at the party. At the end of the movie
she was saved, but she went through a lot of hard
times.
It is important for parents and teens to watch movies
like this. Parents need to watch so they can know what
goes on at parties and where and what their children
are doing. Kids should watch so they can know to keep
an eye out for their friends when they go out together.
The movie also showed us that everybody that you
meet is not your friend.
Before the movie started, a Richland County
investigator introduced us to a fourteen year old girl
that actually went through the experience of sex
trafficking here in South Carolina. While the movie was
playing, she had to keep leaving and coming back. She
was still traumatized from her experience. She didn't
even want to sit with her mom; she wanted to sit with
the lady that saved her. She was very pretty and at the
end she was crying. I wasn't expecting to see a real
person who went through that experience and that
really affected me
There are many things you can do to prevent teen sex
trafficking. If your child wants to go to a party the
parent should drop them off physically. This is
important because the parent should know where and
what your child is doing. The teen shouldn't take
anything from anybody that they don't know what it is.
This is very important because people can give you
something that can make you do crazy things or even
kill you, so please be careful!

Yet no one, or no system
of thoughts, comes even close to the way our Lord
does it. Naturalism settles for the theory of chaos;

Follow Up to
The Bishops Road Show
Nancy Bradshaw, Lay Leader
In last months edition of The Burns Connection, I
reported that 10 members of the congregation
attended The Bishops Road Show over at Shandon
UMC. We discussed talking with Rev. Etheredge
about having a church meeting to share some
information with the congregation. However, after
prayerful consideration, I decided that the church
newsletter might be the better avenue for sharing
some of this information.
Here are some of the topics discussed:
How can members get copies of The 2012 Book of
Discipline of the United Methodist Church? The Book
of Discipline of the United Methodist Church is the
instrument used for setting forth the laws, plans,
policies and processes by which all United Methodists
govern themselves. Our General Conference is held
every 4 years and The Book of Discipline is updated
after that gathering to reflect any changes voted on.
The next General Conference will be held next year,
2016. Copies of The Book of Discipline can be
purchased at Cokesbury.com.
Who is the lay leader? My name is Nancy Bradshaw
and I am honored to currently serve as lay leader for
Francis Burns UMC. Duties of the Lay Leader include
membership on Church Council, Finance Committee,
S/PPRC and Lay Leadership Committee.
Other
responsibilities
include
advocacy,
modeling
Discipleship, celebrating the ministry of the laity,
assisting the Church Council and meeting with the
pastor. (The Book of Discipline 2012 paragraph
#251)
We also have: Lay Members to Annual Conference
who are our delegates to our South Carolina Annual
Conference.
And Lay Servants who are persons
who have been called to develop skills in witnessing
to
the
Christian
faith
through
spoken
communication, church and community leadership
and caregiving ministry. Persons that are interested
in this ministry must meet with, and be
recommended by the pastor. They must also attend
training.
What is our church structure? Are we using the
Administrative Board/ Council on Ministries or are we
using the Church Council structure? -As of January,
2013 we moved to the Church Council structure.
Please see the enclosed chart showing the current
members of our Church Council. We encourage and
invite each member of the congregation to consider
serving in a leadership position or to contact a
current chairperson to serve on their committee.
Each position is for one year, but at the
recommendation of the Committee on Lay
Leadership/ Nominations, persons can serve in the
same position for a maximum of 3 years unless

otherwise stated in The Book of Discipline.

Church School (Sunday School)/ Bible Study- We need
you! There is a Church School class for each of ustoddlers through adults of all ages.
Each Sunday
morning at 9:00 a.m. there is a class waiting for you.
Our Bible Study classes meet at various days and times
during the week. Ollie Benners is our chairperson of
Christian Education and would be happy to talk with you
about Church School and Bible Study.
Strengthening our Prayer Ministry As Nettie Green
stated, No Prayer, No Power. It is our desire that
Francis Burns United Methodist Church be a powerful
House of Prayer. There are prayer request cards in the
pew pockets. We encourage everyone to use the prayer
cards to request specific prayers or the general pray for
me requests. We also have a prayer room on the lower
level.
Maybe you would like to start your worship
experience there before going to Church School, or
before the worship service begins, or anytime during the
week. The family that prays together, stays together.
There is plenty good work for us all. It is our prayerful
desire to have everyone involved in ministry. What is
God calling you to do?
We need all children 5-12 to sing on the childrens
choir,(3-12) participate with our dance ministry, attend
Church school, Children Ministry programs, participate
in Childrens Church, serve as Acolytes as age
appropriate, participate in Vacation Bible School during
the summer, Scouting Ministry as age appropriate and
other church programs that are available.
We need all youths (13-18) to participate in all youth
activities including singing on the Youth Choir, working
with the Junior Ushers, Acolytes, dance ministry, mime
ministry attending church school, Bible study, Childrens
sermons, volunteering with other church ministries and
other church programs that are available.
We need all of our adults (young adults 19-30) (adults
31-54) (older adults 55+) to identify your ministry of
interest (ushers, sound booth, choir, homeless ministry
through Missions, any of the ministries that come under
Nurture, Outreach and Witness, Lay Servants, Working
with Childrens Church, Church Nursery, Vacation Bible
School, Church School, Childrens sermons, prayer
ministry, attending Church School, Bible study, etc.

As the Lenten Season continues

(February 18, 2015 Ash
Wednesday) we are reminded
that Jesus Christ is preparing to
face His death in Jerusalem. The
approach to the Lenten Season
is a time for each of us to
discover how fasting, prayer,
repentance and remorse play an
important
role
in
the
development of our spiritual journeys. After all, the road
to salvation and repentance must begin with our
personal inward search of self to discover who we are in
Christ Jesus.
In St. Matthew 21:1-11, The events leading up to Jesus
entrance into Jerusalem are recorded. When we read
this scripture, often we are caught up in the things
around Jesus and His two disciples. Therefore, we miss
the central point of the text, Jesus preparation for the
cross. Prior to this, Jesus retreated to the wilderness
and spent time fasting, contemplating, reflecting and
preparing for the events that would come. Change is
very important for our spiritual journey. Winston
Churchill said:
To improve is to change,
to be perfect is to change often.

Blessings to all.

Missions
Ministry
has
been
encouraged and inspired by your
strong, unwavering support of
Missions Programs and activities
over the years.

During the Lenten Season for 2015 (Wednesday,

February 18th until Sunday, April 5th) we should be
engaged in a time of personal growth and a study of our
spiritual selves. During our daily walk of life, we are
each facing personal situations that demand us to be in
a right relationship with God and others in the Christian
faith. We should not face these situations alone. First,
we must know that God is with us and second, we ought
to have at least one Christian person that we can turn
to.
As we participate in the celebration of Lent, Holy Week,
and Easter, let us remember to set our faces toward
Jerusalem understanding that God expects and requires
something from us. Furthermore, we must believe that
His grace will provide the strength for us to do and say
the things that will keep us forever in Gods Will.

Please keep in mind that Missions

Ministry has adopted this outreach
as a permanent, year-round effort. We also shared
information with Counselors on high school summer
camp. Visit South Carolina Business Week page and
follow the link to the application for this year's camp
held July 26th-31st at Presbyterian College.
