Culprits
get
smoked
The Police in Limpopo arrested six suspects and confiscated cigarettes worth millions in two separate incidents late last week.
At Tshilwavhusiku, members of the Police followed up information they received about suspicious activities at a house at a village
near the town. Upon arrival at the scene, three suspects attempted
to run away, but they were quickly apprehended by the Police. Police
discovered illegal cigarettes to the value of more than R2 million in a
small truck as well as in a bakkie. The owner of the house was also
arrested and the suspects are due to appear in court soon. The origin
of the cigarettes, as well as where they were destined for, forms part
of the investigation.
In another incident at Motetema, two suspects were arrested
and the stolen goods recovered after the suspects overpowered and
robbed an employee of a cigarette company while he was delivering
cigarettes to a shop in the Lebowakgomo area. The armed robbery
took place at approximately 11:00 last Thursday morning at Bylsdrift
village. The employee stopped to deliver cigarettes when he was
overpowered by two unknown suspects who forced him back into his
vehicle and drove to a bushy area where they offloaded the cigarettes
into their own vehicle before fleeing.
Members from the neighbouring Motetema Police station followed up on information they received about a suspicious vehicle
and people at Manapyane village about two hours after the robbery.
Once again, upon arrival at the house two men tried to run away but
they were cornered by members from the Tactical Response Team.
Upon searching the house the cigarettes to the value of approximately R200 000 were discovered and the suspects were arrested
for the possession of suspected stolen property. The suspects are
from Sohanguve and was sceduled to appear in court earlier this
week. Investigations to link them to more incidents are continuing.

Ooh, eh, eh ...

Burgersfort is getting a new sidewalk just after the third dead robot when you enter from Steelpoort. As a result 5 lane traffic had to be rerouted to three lanes on
Wednesday afternoon. Informal lanes did not help much to alleviate the chaos, but
the pointsman was very much alive at the dead robot and did an excellent job. Thank
you!

Neo rides off with the prize

Neo Boshego was the lucky winner of a 16#
bicycle in a competition at Laerskool Burgersfort.
The schools grade RA and grade RE classes
held the competition in the form of a lucky
draw.
The grade R teachers, Ms. Florence Bere
and Ms. Yolanda Weilbach thanked the parents for the support and participation in the
project. They would also like to thank everyone who bought a ticket for the competition.

Praise singing in parliament

When Welmina Kgato Masemola (74) received a call from the presidency requesting
her to prepare a praise song for President
Jacob Zuma during the presidents 6th State
of the Nation Address (SoNA) in Parliament
in Cape Town, she thought she was dreaming. Mme Masemola still vividly remembers
the momentous day in November 2014 as if
it was yesterday. I was busy with my daily
chores in my garden when the call came.
I have in the past sang the praises of traditional leaders such as Mandla Mandela,
some senior politicians, at weddings and at

burial services, but never in my wildest dream

did I ever dream of praise singing a president
let alone shake his hand.
Welmina who was born and raised in Marishane Tribal Authority in Sekhukhune, is the fifth
born of the late Thaule and Mmalehlakane
Masemola. She is married to Khulong
January Mohajane and is blessed with eight
children (6 sons and two daughters).
Her love for poetry started when she was
still very young. We would sit around the
fire and recite folklore poems and folktale
stories, taught by my grandmother. I was
always leading and my talent was exposed
at school when I was in standard 2. I used to
get 10 out of 10 in poetry and could memorise
and recite all the poems. I have never looked
back since then.
She said praise singing is a God given talent
and despite her busy schedule, she still finds
time to sew traditional attire and seams traditional and modern beads to sell to the locals.
Among her clients are mayors, traditional
leaders and business people.
My trip to Cape Town was a like a dream.
First of all, it was my first time in a plane and
I enjoyed delicious meals in a 5 star hotel.
Im still fantasising about the 5 days of royal
treatment and of mingling with international
representatives and ambassadors. On the
other hand, I was disappointed by some of
the parliamentarians behaviour. I grew up in
a respectable family and it was a disgrace to
see the youth behaving in that manner.
On her return from Parliament, Welmina
received a heroines welcome by relatives
and friends. Welmina Masemola (74) is the
first woman in South Africa to praise sings a
state president in parliament.

Local beauty heading to

national competition
Marlize Comley will be heading
to the Mini Miss RSA national
competition in October.
This beauty from Steelpoort will
be representing Limpopo in the
competition.
The Limpopo winners were announced last week. The national
competition will take place early
in October and the finalists will
not only be gracing the catwalk
in a fashion type show, but will
also have to showcase a specific
talent like singing or dancing.
Marlize has enjoyed modelling
since a very young age and has
won a variety of local beauty
competitions in the past.
Marlize is a learner at Hoerskool
Lydenburg and is not just a
pretty face.
She is an energetic young woman who loves adventure sports
like scuba diving and paragliding.
Marlize will be using the coming
months to raise funds for the
competition. She is appealing
to the community to support her
efforts and help her make the
best of this opportunity to make
the area proud.
The Comley family is very proud,
but also very thankful for the
opportunities she is given. The
family says that nothing would
be possible without Gods guidance and grace in their lives and
for that they are ever thankful.

How to tackle South Africas

President Jacob Zuma caused a stir in
Parliament this week when he expressed his
feelings about teenage pregnancy and these
young mothers schooling.
He called teenage mothers a reality where
they are kids with kids. They dont know how
to grow a child, how to look after them. They
have become a burden to grandmothers, to
society. So why should we just sit and look?
They must be taken and forced to go to
school, far away. They must be educated by
government until they are empowered and
they can take care of their kids, take them to
Robben Island or any other island, sit there,
study until they are qualified to come back
and work to look after their kids, he said.
Allowing the girls to leave school was becoming an untenable burden on society and the
states welfare bill.
He feels that grandparents are forced to use
their pension money to help take care of
children born to teenagers. By making the
teenager take responsibility for their education and then their children, paying of grant
money might be eliminated. We make you
take care of your kid so that we dont have to
give a grant, he added.
He also suggested that welfare grants should
be paid in vouchers and not in cash to prevent the parents form misspending it. Should
we give the money or should we have vouchers that are very specific, either to buy food
or uniforms for the school or to pay for the
schools so the money will not be used for
anything except the needs of the child. It is a
matter to talk about
President Zuma first expressed his view on
this subject in his 2009 election campaign.
He said that his views caused controversy
the first time around and he knows it will do
so again.
Research done by Michelle Solomon of
Africa Check in 2013 showed that girls are
not falling pregnant to access social security
grants. Her research showed that the bulk of
grants are spent on food, education and basic goods and services. A report by Partners
in Sexual Health found that teenagers often
find it difficult to visit family planning clinics
as their operating times clashed with school
hours. The workers at the clinics are often
to blame too as they use abusive language
when dealing with teenagers asking for
pregnancy termination pills or contraceptives.
Reports have also found that teenage mothers are stigmatized and are often punished
by their parents for their pregnancy by not
being allowed to finish school.
Platinum Gazette asked readers what they
think about this issue.

Mr. Vulture Mohlala said: Ja, some are

falling pregnant just to get the grants. I think
vouchers can work better. Keep the mothers
and babies together, but the girls must finish
school as well. That is very important.

Mr. Lesley Kekana said: They can work on

his plan. It is a good one. In South Africa
we are experiencing unemployment and it
is because we are not educated. It can help
relieve unemployment if they are forced to
study somewhere like Robben Island. Vouchers instead of money are a good plan. Many
girls now get the money, go and make their
hair nice and buy themselves sundresses.
They are not taking care of their children. The
voucher wont work at the salon.

Ms. Helen Sekgogoba said: It is the right

way to do it like he suggests. They just fall
pregnant to get the grants. Zuma has a good
idea. The girls misuse the money. A voucher
will work. He is right it is a problem because
now they dont finish school.
Right: Mr. William Makola said: To take the
grants away is a good solution. Previously
there were not so many pregnancies because the people did not get money for every
child. The girls must finish school. Give only
grants to old people. With him is Dorris.

Mr. Papikie Hleko (18) said: These girls

you must go to Shoprite at the end of the
month. You will find there are no women of
40 or so, only these young girls. I think they
get pregnant for the grants. Dont send them
to Robben Island, but take them somewhere
they can study. You cant study if you have to
take care of a baby.

Mr. Gift Mangwale said: Zuma did not say

they must take the teenage mothers to Robben Island. Ive got the clip, I know what he
said and I think even a voucher system will
have corruption. There will be specific shops
from which the vouchers will be redeemable
and only a few will benefit. It is good to take
them away to study. In the long run it will be
beneficial to the children.

Mr. Thabo Magabotja and Mr. Vincent Tshabalala said: No, vouchers is still something theyll
get. Give them nothing so that they can learn to take care of themselves. If they give them
the food, theyll just sell it to get money again. They must encourage these young girls to go
to school so they can become something in life. However, it will not be good to force them to
finish their education. They must want to do it. In some families the grant money is claimed
and used for things
like stokvel, while the
parents are actually
providing for the
needs of the child.

Right: Ms. Boitumelo Moloto and Mr.

Danil Matlala said:
Dont isolate the
teenage mothers. It
is about giving them
something more. It is
good to have them
finish their education,
but dont separate
them or isolate them.
It will just cause
stress. They need
care and guidance.
The vouchers can
work. Maybe have
community support
centers where the
babies are taken
care of while the
mothers are being
educated. Proper
meals can also be
provided there.
Remember that girls
need guidance from
early on. Poverty
is also a cause of
the trend we see.
We and our leaders
must help build our
communities up to
improve this.

Mr. Collins Selepe and Ms Lucia Moraba said: Even at Robben

Island they will get pregnant. If they want to be with a boy, those girls
will get one to sleep with. It is not about the money. They are just
immature, emotional and get involved with adult things early in life.
Education is a choice, you cannot force them to learn.

teenage pregnancy problem?

Mr. Justice Mphahlele said: They do go to

hair salons with the grant money. Vouchers
rather than money can work there I agree
with Zuma. Dont take the girls to Robben
Island. It will just be an added expense
for the taxpayer. Forcing them to become
educated will not work they must want to
learn. In most modern countries birth control
is available. It must be introduced here as a
compulsory measure. Like in China. If you
have more than one child, you will pay a
heavy tax for that child.

Mr. Ally Malapane and Ms. Thabang Milanzi said: It is not a good idea. Only girls with 3 or
more children must qualify for grants. Vouchers can maybe work. Money is used for hair salons and buying clothes. The girls must finish school, but not on Robben Island.

Mr. Rulph Kgwete said: No, that must not

happen. Dont separate the teenage mothers
and their babies. Children must be with their
parents. It is good that he wants to force
them to finish school but not without their
children. Vouchers will be sold and there will
be corruption with it. Most teenagers just fall
pregnant to get the money.

Mr. Mike Mampu and Mr. Simon Makola said: It is not so easy. Everyone will suffer if you take
the girls away from the babies. They will miss their children and parents. Yes, the girls just
want the grants and that is why they fall pregnant, but a voucher system will not work.

Mr. Zondi Nkambule said: It is not the solution. The solution is to educate the teenagers. There are many programmes that can be
used to address the problem. Government
must assist the teenage mothers. The grant
is too little. That is not the reason why they
are falling pregnant.

Mr. Oliver Malapane said: It is a workable

plan. Government and parents must assist
each other. Raise and advise the children
properly. The foods we eat these days are
also a problem. They make the children want
to act out on urges and have babies. The
voucher system is a good idea, but dont punish the children by stopping access to food.

Mr. Walter Phetla said: We need to still think

a bit more about Zumas plan. Yes, the grants
are what the girls want and that is why they
want to get pregnant. They dont focus on
school. It will be good is they can somehow
force the girls to finish school.

Mr. Charles Sekgobela said: It is madness.

The kids need their mothers. They will infringe on their constitutional rights if they are
forced to be separated. They do get pregnant just to access the grants, but you cannot
force them to study. It is like the saying you
can lead a horse to water, but you cannot
force it to drink. If they dont want to learn,
they wont.

Mr. Joseph Sediba said: It is a good plan

but is cannot work. A baby cannot be raised
without its mother. They must be breastfed.
The girls dont fall pregnant because of the
grants. The girls want to make the boys
husbands be loved and they want to claim
benefits from the men. They think having
someones baby will force a commitment to
them.

Mr. Jeffrey Jamba Motswiane said: In South

Africa we need employment. What Zuma
is saying makes no sense. We cannot take
away the baby; it is against the constitutional
law of our country. This is not a good story to
tell. Give jobs, not grants or vouchers.

Ms. Fikile Selahle said: The voucher thing

is a good thing. There is some spending of
the grants at hair salons etc. and then the
children are not properly taken care of. I
dont think you can separate the mothers
and babies to give the moms an education. If
they dont want to learn, they wont. Perhaps
having kids will motivate them to do better for
themselves and provide for the children.

Mr. Jacky Makofane said: That will be kind of

kidnapping if you take the babies away from
the mothers to have go study somewhere
like Robben Island. This suggestion will cost
even more money than the grants because
now they will need to be provided for and the
children will have to be cared for somewhere
until the girls are re-united with their kids.
Just give them the grants.

R28 million raised

As we prepare to celebrate Human Rights
Day on Saturday 21 March, we are proud
to announce that a significant proportion of
the funds raised by Casual Day go towards
lobbying for the rights of persons with disabilities.
This is the word from Casual Day project
leader, Celeste Vinassa, who added that
SAs foremost fundraiser for persons with
disabilities, raised R28 million countrywide
last year. This is over R3 million more than
we raised last year, which means we can
expand our reach and secure greater rights
for our constituency.
Since the inception of the project in 1995,
we have never seen such a massive yearon-year growth. The final audit has been
done and the 2014 campaign has been
closed off. Our aim this year is to spread the
message of the social impact of the funds.
Much of the work that we do is in lobbying
for the rights of persons with disabilities at
both the government and corporate level,
she said.
Casual Day is the flagship project of the
National Council for Persons with Physical
Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA).
Since 1995 Casual Day has made it possible
for the NCPPDSA fulfill its mandate of creating a fully accessible and inclusive society for
all, raising R223 million.
According to Vinassa this money will benefit thousands of persons with disabilities
through the branches of the 12 beneficiary
organisations in every region R17 million
was raised by the NGO sector, while the
remaining R11 million was raised in the corporate sector. The beneficiaries of the funds,
collected via a donation for a R10 sticker,
on the first Friday in September each year,
include 500 schools and organisations that
render services to persons with disabilities.
Casual Days new chairman, Dr Lusani Netshitomboni, Chief Planner: Strategy, Planning and Quality Assurance of the University
of South Africa, said Casual Day is one way
to speak with one voice about inclusion,
diversity and universal access to education,
communication, and human rights for all.
This partnership between all the different
players in the disability sector contributes to
the success of Casual Day. Disability organisations countrywide are all feeling the pinch

of a constrained economic climate, and that

is why it is so important for the entire disability world to speak with one voice and lobby
together for our place in the sun.
Vinassa said We must acknowledge the
selfless work of Miss World, Rolene Strauss
as well as our ambassadors and the media,
who helped us spread the message last year.
Casual Days mission is to raise funds, but it
is also to raise awareness around disability,
and we can only do this with our army of
celebrity volunteers.
Casual Day ambassador and disability rights
activist Terry Ann Adams last year took up the
challenge to educate South Africans about
disability through the media. I am shocked at
the fact that so many children with disabilities
are neglected and outside the school system. With proper stimulation and care, their
lives can be considerably enriched. Casual
Day money goes towards providing for their
needs, she says.
Casual Days anchor sponsor, the Edcon
Group, announced that their employees
raised R2.3 million in 2014 in the various
Edcon stores and that their employee volunteering programme evolved out of the groups
involvement with Casual Day and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.
Casual Days national beneficiaries include
the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities, SA National Council for the
Blind, SA Federation for Mental Health, the
Deaf Federation of SA, QASA, Autism South
Africa, Down Syndrome South Africa, The
National Association for Persons with Cerebral Palsy, the South African National Deaf
Association, the National Institute for the
Deaf, Alzheimers South Africa and the South
African Disability Alliance.
Casual Day is on 4 September this year.
Watch this space for the announcement of
the theme and official colour of the year.

SPORT
Wildevy Golfdag n
groot sukses
Die Wildevy Manne het verlede week 7 Maart n golfdag by Tubatse Chroom Klub aangebied. Dit was nog n
poging om fondse in te samel om minderbevoorregtes
in die omgewing te kan help. Die dag was so n groot

versit.
Die dag se uitslae was: Wenners - Thomas, Patrick, Oscar
en Albert; Tweede - Andor, Embrich, Werner en JJ, Derde Obed, Austin, Quentin en Peter. Bossie Boshoff het die langste mans dryfhou geslaan en Laralyn Botha vir die dames.

alkoholiese versnapperinge.
