Q4. Derive the forced response function for a SDOF mass spring damper system(having Mass M, stiffness K,
damping co-efficient C) under rotating unbalance force(me 2). Where, m is unbalance mass, e is eccentricity and
is operating speed. Draw the graph between amplitude and frequency ration for different damping ratio.

PART-B (21 Marks)(Open Book)

Q1 A rough casting of a rotor, with a mass of 200 kg, is mounted on centers (bearings) 110 cm apart for
machining. The rotor is balanced by attaching two masses, in such a way that the dynamic forces on the bearings
become equal and opposite. The two masses are placed one each in the planes A (9 kg) and B (10 kg), which are
on opposite sides of the plane containing the mass center of the rotor, at a distance of 50 cm and 35 cm,
respectively, from it. The angle between the CG of the plane A and that of the plane B is 90. The distance of
each mass from the axis of rotation is 37 cm (for the plane A) and 44 cm (for the plane B).
Determine the distance of the CG of the rotor from the axis of rotation, and its angular position with respect to
the mass in the plane A. Also find the forces on the bearings when the rotor (with the masses attached in the
planes A and B) runs at a speed of 100 rpm.

Q2. The connecting rod of an IC engine is 450 mm long. It has a mass of 2 Kg. The centre of mass of the rod is
300 mm from the small end and its radius of gyration about an axis through this centre is 175 mm. The mass of
the piston is 2.5 Kg and the stroke is 300 mm. The cylinder diameter is 115 mm. Determine magnitude and
direction of the toque applied on the crankshaft when the crank is at 40 and the piston is moving away from the
inner dead centre under an effective gas pressure of 2 N/mm 2. The engine speed is 1000 rpm.

Q3. A punching machine punches 20 holes of 30 mm diameter in 20 mm thick plates per minute. The actual
punching operation is done in 1/10th of a revolution of the crankshaft. Ultimate shear strength of the steel plates
is 280 N/mm2. The coefficient of fluctuation of speed is 0.12. The flywheel with a maximum diameter of 1.6m
rotates at 12 times the speed of crankshaft. The flywheel is made of cast iron with a working tensile stress of
6N/mm2 and density of 7000kg/m3. Determine :
(i) Power of the motor assuming mechanical efficiency 92%
(ii) Cross section of flywheel rim if width is twice the thickness.
