Freedom
Schools
Servant
Leader
Interns
work
as
paid
summer
camp
instructors,
Monday
through
Friday,
7:30
am
until
approximately
4:00
pm,
with
children
in
grades
3-12
(Divided
into
different
levels
two,
three,
and
four
based
on
age).
Interns
lead
a
literacy
rich
curriculum
during
the
morning
and
lead/chaperone
field
trips
and
activities
in
the
afternoon.
Attendance
at
parent
meetings
during
the
summer,
typically
once
a
week,
is
expected.
Interns
also
must
attend
local
pre-training
in
Los
Angeles
(May
30th),
a
weeklong
training
in
Knoxville,
TN
before
the
beginning
of
CDF
Freedom
Schools
(May
31st
June
7th),
and
post
training
at
the
Los
Angeles
CDF
Freedom
Schools
site
(June
8th
June
10th).
Responsibilities
Deliver
Integrated
Reading
Curriculum
to
class
of
ten
or
more
students
for
6-7
weeks
during
the
summer,
according
to
standards
developed
by
CDF
and
Community
Coalition
Serve
as
energetic
Harambee
leaders
each
day
of
local
program
operation.
Set-up,
maintain
and
breakdown
classroom
space
Serve
as
leaders
of
afternoon
activities
and
other
special
events;
chaperone
field
trips.
Maintain
health/safety
standards
&
accurate
records
relating
to
attendance
and
first
aid
Collaborate
with
the
program
staff
to
establish
and
maintain
a
positive,
supportive
and
structured
environment
for
the
children
entrusted
to
their
care.
Qualifications
At
least
18
years
old,
enrolled
in
college
and
completed
at
least
1
year
of
undergraduate
studies
or
recent
college
graduates
who
have
previously
served
as
Freedom
School
interns
Solid
commitment
to
childrens
advocacy
&
enthusiasm
for
the
Childrens
Defense
Fund
Freedom
Schools
program
-
ability
to
motivate
others
Strong
written
and
verbal
skills;
willingness
to
strive
for
excellence
in
all
areas
Experience
working
w/
African
American
and
Latino
youth
from
inner
city
backgrounds
Exhibit
positive
behavior
and
attitude;
model
a
mature
and
professional
demeanor
Strong
interpersonal
skills
and
commitment
to
the
character
and
humility
of
servant
leadership
Current
voter
registration
Satisfactory
drug
and
background
check
for
criminal
and
child
protective
findings

Freedom
Schools
Founded
in
1995
by
the
Childrens
Defense
Fund
Freedom
Schools
program
is
a
direct
service
initiative
which
provides
summer
options
for
children
while
strengthening
parent
and
community
involvement
in
the
year-round
achievement
of
children.
Freedom
Schools
serve
youth
ages
5
to
17
for
six-eight
weeks
and
integrate
reading,
conflict
resolution,
and
social
action
in
an
activity-based
curriculum
that
promotes
social,
cultural,
and
historical
awareness.
Built
around
the
theme
I
Can
Make
a
Difference
in
Myself,
My
Family,
My
Community,
My
Country
and
My
World
with
Hope,
Action
and
Education,
Freedom
School
provides
a
literacy-rich,
culturally-inspiring
curriculum
in
which
children
learn
to
love
to
read.
Using
African-American
role
models,
community
guests
who
share
personal
stories
of
making
a
difference,
cooperative
games,
and
activities
for
critical
thinking,
the
children
gain
confidence
and
skills
to
strengthen
their
school-year
performance.
In
the
summer
of
2009,
there
were
132
Freedom
Schools
programs
across
61
cities
and
24
states
serving
9,200
children.
