Sample Assignment

Context
A local television company has decided to make a documentary about the Travel and
Tourism Sector. You have been employed as a researcher to produce materials and
information which will then form the body of the documentary. You do not have to make the
documentary.
Carry out research and produce materials for the documentary.
You might consider including:
interview notes or recorded interviews
interview questions
comments and/or quotations from individuals
charts with explanations
detailed notes for the documentary makers
scripts for sections of the documentary
This list is not exclusive.
Task 1
The first part of the documentary is about the history and structure of the travel and tourism
sector.
Your research and materials must cover:

an explanation of key historical developments in this sector

an explanation of the structure of the sector

This task covers assessment criteria 1.1 and 1.2.

Task 2
The second part of the documentary concerns the influence of local and national
governments and international agencies on the sector. Your research and materials for this
part of the documentary must cover.

an analysis of the function of government, government sponsored bodies and

international agencies in travel and tourism
an explanation of how local and national economic policy influence the success of the
sector
a discussion of the implications of political change on the travel and tourism sector in
different countries

This task covers assessment criteria 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3.

Task 3
The third part of the documentary focuses on the effects of supply and demand on the travel
and tourism sector.
Carry out research and produce materials for this part of the documentary.
Your research must cover:

an explanation of factors affecting tourism demand

an explanation of how supply has changed to meet the effects of demand

This task covers assessment criteria 3.1and 3.2.

Task 4
The final part of the documentary is about the impacts of tourism.
You should carry out research and provide materials to cover:

an evaluation of the main positive and negative economic, environmental and social
impacts of tourism
an explanation of strategies that can be used to minimise the negative impacts whilst
maximising the positive impacts

This task covers assessment criteria 4.1 and 4.2.

Please note your assignment must be accompanied by a bibliography.

on travel and tourism in a variety of different
countries. The points made need to be illustrated
with the use of relevant examples.
The chosen materials must explain a range of
factors which affect the demand for tourism. In
addition there must a clear explanation of how
supply has changed as a result of changes in
demand.
The chosen materials must present an evaluation
of the main economic, environmental and social
impacts of tourism. The explanation must also
cover strategies to minimise the negative impacts
and maximise the positive impacts of tourism.
The strategies must be clearly linked to the
identified impacts.
