IdontteachAncientGreek,butIwishIdid.Iwishitsostrongly
thatmygraduatethesiswasaboutintroductorytextbooksforAncient
Greek.OneofthethingsIrealizedinmyresearchisthatthereisverylittle
inthewayofmaterialsthatareorientedtowardvisuallearners.(Yeah,
therearepicturesinthebooks,butnotanythingatalllikeamodern
languagetextbook.)
SoIsetouttofixthatprobleminsomesmalldegree.Whatyou
haveonyourcomputerscreenorinyourhandisaveryroughdraftofthat
solution.Therearedoubtlessproblemsandmistakesinthisbook.Idlove
tohearfromyouaboutthem.Ibelieveinincrementalimprovementand
havenoegoaboutbeingtoldIvemadeamistake.
Ihavealsotriedtodotwothingswiththepictures.Thefirstis
pedagogical.IselectedGreeksettingsandancientGreekculturalproducts
fortheimagesinthepicturedictionary.If,aslanguageteachers,wewish
toconveythetargetcultureinthemostaccuratewaypossible,weshould
useauthenticmaterials.Thesematerialsaresomewhatlackingfor
antiquity.Ihavenotimemachinetogobackandcatch5thCenturyBCE
Atheniansgoingabouttheirbusiness,sothenextbestistheir
archaeologicalremainsandart.
ThesecondthingisthatIhavealsotriedtofindsourcesofthese
materialsasclosetothepublicdomainaspossible,whichhasnotproven
easy.ThoughIamabigbelieverinopenandshareableculturalproducts,
thisoneisnotasopenasIwouldlike.Why?Myintentionistogetthis
readyforpublicationbothdigitallyandinprint.Atitscurrentstageof
development,itisstillnowherenearreadyforthatkindofThecurrent
editionhasbeenproducedonaCromebook,soifthereareanydesign
