This years conference will showcase the newest technologies, products, and best
practices that address our industrys greatest challenges. Our technical programme
includes more than 350 peer-selected papers covering 45 technical sessions, along
with engaging panel discussions and training courses to boost your technical skills.
It all begins with Mondays Opening General Session, Affordable Energy. Our panel
will weigh affordable energy options against environmental, economic, and political
concerns, now that the era of easy oil is over. And dont miss the SE1 Sustainability
Task Force Special Session, People, Profit, Planet: Advancing Practices that Balance
Economic Growth, Social Development, and Environmental Protection Today and in
the Future, led by 2014 SPE President Jeff Spath. All of our special sessions feature a
lineup of industry heavyweights who will address todays hottest E&P topics.
In the exhibition halls, more than 300 vendors will unveil groundbreaking products,
services, and technologies. Be sure to visit the SPE Pavilion, where youll discover an
expanding global network of technical resources for every stage of your E&P career.
Im confident our exciting agenda will inspire everyone to engage across technical

SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability at ATCE 2014
Exhibitors
As an ongoing commitment, we have issued our exhibitors
with environmental sustainability guidelines to offer practical
advice on minimising the environmental impact of their
involvement at ATCE 2014. From planning stand designs
through to reducing the use of printed marketing collateral,
we have made a range of suggestions that will limit waste.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
By introducing a series of simple, practical measures, we aim
to ensure that ATCE 2014 is delivered in a more sustainable
way by reducing, reusing, and recycling resources.
Our conference attendee bags are made from eco fabric.
Waste from exhibition buildup and breakdown will be
recycled where possible.
Jugs of water in the conference sessions will replace
plastic bottles of water.
The carpet tiles in the exhibition are 100% recyclable.
Download the ATCE 2014 Mobile App! Scan the code on page 5.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is committed to ensuring that the environmental impact
of our events is kept to a minimum. We aim to make progress in the field of sustainability through
reducing energy usage, promoting eco-friendly mobility, reducing water consumption, and limiting
wasteall core values in keeping with those of the oil and gas industry.

TOURS
4 hours
Sunday, 26 October
EUR 36.50 per person
The tour will start with a short drive to the windmill village
of the Zaanse Schans, a characteristic living and working
area on the River Zaan, with wooden houses and windmills
dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The original
buildings vividly depict Dutch life in those times. Zaanse
Schans is a fully inhabited, open-air conservation area
located nine miles north of Amsterdam. Before returning
to Amsterdam, you will visit the medieval town of Edam, a
town rich with history. Shipbuilding played an important
role in its growth during the 17th century. Edam once had
33 shipyards and one of the more famous ships built in
Edam is the Halve Maan, the ship used by Henry Hudson in
his attempt to discover a northern route to the East Indies
in 1609. A futile attempt, in fact, because he ended up on
the island of Manhattan. The most obvious association with
Edam is its cheese. For centuries the well-known round
Edam cheeses have been sent from the town to all corners
of the world. The cheese market, once again restored to
its place of honour, operates weekly during the summer
months. The nearby cheese warehouses keep alive the
memory of a colourful past.

The tour will explore some of the most panoramic and
historic areas of Amsterdam. It will start along the Amstel
River with the skinny wooden bridge, the Munt Tower, and
the floating flower market before making its way through
Dam Square, the Royal Palace, New Church, the Amsterdam
Central Station, the museum, and the antique quarters. The
tour will also pass through the oldest part of Amsterdam
called the Jordaan with its quaint little streets.
You will also get to see Amsterdam from the water
during a one-hour canal cruise. The cruise will glide through
the old centre of the city and into its harbour, where you will
see merchants mansions, churches, and warehouses dating
back to the 17th century.
Heineken Experience
2.5 hours
Sunday, 26 October and Tuesday, 28 October
EUR 48 per person
The tour will take you through the malt silos for a peek inside
the mash coppers. You will have the opportunity to stand
amidst the lager cellar tanks used to mature the young,
green beer. You will then be taken on a voyage of discovery
through the World of Heineken. The malt silo in the
authentic brew house still has the original brewing vessels
and you can enjoy a refreshing glass of Heineken beer in the
Brewhouse Bar. The experience ends in the See You Again
Bar. The former Heineken brewery is a national monument
and is listed as an anchor point along the European Route of
Industrial Heritage. It is also one of the most popular tourist
attractions in the Dutch capital.

with a panoramic drive through the oldest part of Amsterdam
called de Jordaan with its quaint narrow streets, bridges, and
inner courtyards.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Gassan Diamond
factory. Gassan diamonds are housed in the former home of
the Boas diamond polishing factory, built in 1879. The factory
is a very impressive building, and you will get to see how the
diamond polishers turn a rough stone into a precious gem.

Discover the hidden treasures behind the facades of
Amsterdams most impressive houses. The tour starts in
a beautiful 17th century canal house with its magnificent

French garden at the back of the house with parterres
de broderie, and visits to a range of gardens and coach
houses in the Golden Bend, the most exclusive part of the
Herengracht. Coffee with a syrup waffle will be served in
the kitchen of the Geelvinck Hinlopen private home.

a Pearl Earring. You will take a walk through the beautiful
old town along the canals and many almshouses, and visit
The Royal Dutch Delftware factory De Porceleyne Fles. The
factory was established in 1653 and is the last remaining
Delftware factory from the 17th century. The world-famous
Royal Delftware is still entirely hand painted. During the tour
you will get insights into the process of making Delftware
and you will see the talented artists at work.

This course covers the fundamental principles concerning how hydraulic fracturing treatments can be used to
stimulate oil and gas wells. It includes discussions on how to select wells for stimulation, what controls fracture
propagation, fracture width, etc., how to develop data sets, and how to calculate fracture dimensions. The course also
covers information concerning fracturing fluids, propping agents, and how to design and pump successful fracturing
treatments. This course requires a laptop computer.

Nicholas Clarke, Head of Analytics, Tessella
Following a career in academic research,
Nicholas Clarke has worked with Tessella in the
commercial technology sector since 1999. His
wide ranging work has included developing
Tessellas award winning asset management and
performance optimisation software. Moving through technical
roles as an analyst and programme manager, he is now Head
of Analytics. The years spent crunching numbers required to
model and visualise chemical bond formation are a strong
complement to those spent more recently in solving practical
problems in industry. They combine to give him a great feel for

DEVELOPING EXPERTISE
By combining R&D and technological boldness
To secure the future of energy, Total has identi ed the following challenges for its
R&D operations: to more eectively develop and process resources, to drive faster
growth in alternative energies, to optimize the e ciency of the industrial base, to
design innovative products, to address environmental issues and to fasttrack the
introduction of advanced technologies across the business base. We intend to invest
7 billion in R&D over the period 2010-2015. Thanks to recent advances in geological
concepts and technology, for example, major oil and gas finds are now possible
in places that not so very long ago would have been unexpected or inaccessible.
SunPower, Totals solar aliate also develops a leading-edge innovative technology
unmatched in efficiency and reliability for its photovoltaic solar power plants.

SE3: Special Session Assessing Environmental
Impacts to Groundwater, Air, and Our Global
Community
Consensus regarding the environmental risks of shale
exploration has been complicated by the lack of accurate
and consistent procedure and practices for characterising
potential impacts and/or waste streams associated
with shale oil/gas development. Critical shortcomings in
characterisation efforts include a lack of consistency in
monitoring time frames, constituents of concern, analytical
tools and methods, sample collection methods, and
reporting, resulting in conflicting conclusions regarding
the risks of extraction and a lack of public confidence in
monitoring results. This panel will focus on repeatable and
defensible procedures for assessing environmental impacts
to ground water, air and other media.

SE6: Special Session CO2-EOR as a Pathway
for CCUS
With a worldwide emphasis on reducing carbon emissions
into the atmosphere, carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery
(CO2-EOR) is well situated to provide critical experience for
long-term carbon management strategies. This proposed
special session will first set the stage by discussing the
worldwide potential for CO2-EOR and the potential carbon
storage associated with these oil recovery projects. To relate
the experiences of a group of unique and entrepreneurial
petroleum firms, case studies will be brought forth to show
success stories with regard to matching amenable oil fields
with anthropogenic CO 2 sources. Burgeoning activities in
residual oil zones (thick, low oil saturation reservoirs beneath
the main pay zone) that increase both oil reserves and CO2
storage potential will be discussed. Finally, new and exciting
pilot project(s) will be highlighted.
