Natural Gas
Drawing on its vast experience and carefully nurtured skill sets, IndianOil has made successful
forays in diverse areas such as Natural Gas, Petrochemicals, Exploration & Production,
Renewable Energy, etc.
Over the years, Natural Gas has emerged as the 'fuel of choice' across the world. It is steadily
replacing traditional fossil fuels due to its environment friendly characteristics which help in
meeting the stipulated automobile emission norms. Natural Gas has significant cost advantages
over fuels such as Naphtha and commercial LPG. Demand for Natural Gas in India is primarily
driven by the fertiliser and power sectors, which account for almost two-third of the countrys
gas consumption.
IndianOil has co-promoted Petronet LNG Limited (PLL) for setting up LNG (Liquefied Natural
Gas) terminals at Dahej & Kochi. IndianOil has marketing rights for 30% quantity of the LNG
procured by PLL from RasGas on long term basis at Dahej besides long term contract at Kochi.
Demand for Natural gas in India is growing and cannot be met by the current indigenous
production. Hence, IndianOil is in the process of sourcing more quantities of LNG to meet the
increasing requirements.
Within the gas business, City Gas Distribution (CGD) is a rapidly growing segment. Green Gas
Ltd., IndianOil's joint venture with GAIL (India) Ltd., is already operational in Agra and
Lucknow in the state of Uttar Pradesh and is further expanding to cater to the increased demand
in various sectors. In an initiative to expand the CGD network, IndianOil has formed a
consortium with M/s Adani Gas Ltd. to develop CGD networks on pan India basis.
In Gas Transmission business, IndianOil owns and operates Dadri-Panipat Pipeline. IndianOil
has formed a consortium with GSPL and other OMCs to build & operate Gas pipelines across
the country.
In a major step to increase IndianOils presence in Natural Gas industry, Corporation is currently
implementing 5 MMTPA LNG import Terminal at Ennore near Chennai which is targeted for

IndianOil is in the process of procuring LNG from world market on long term as well as short
term basis for meeting the Internal Consumption at our own Refineries and for Ennore LNG
Terminal.
IndianOil has the capabilities to supply re-gassified LNG to customers presently located in the
Northern and Western regions of India. With the expansion of the pipeline network in Southern
region as well as other parts of the country, IndianOil can supply gas to customers located near
those pipelines. As a committed supplier, IndianOil is completely responsible for delivery of gas
to the customers premises. The transportation services of the company engaged in transportation
of gas are hired to ensure deliveries. This model is used world over wherein multiple gas
suppliers operate through one transportation system.
The LNG at Doorstep initiative involves making LNG available to the customers not
connected by gas pipeline. Gas is transported through a cryogenic system, stored in a cryogenic
holding tank at the target location and re-gassified on-site through vaporizers for use as fuel. The
entire operation being concealed eliminates the possibility of adulteration and pilferage.
Introduced in 2007, this initiative has been well received and is attracting more customers
located away from the pipelines. IndianOil has in-house capabilities in the manufacturing of
Cryogenic equipment at the State of Art facility at Nasik for the last three decades.
Major Highlights

Initiatives
Sustainability
Towards A Better Tomorrow
Economic development alone is no longer viewed as a strategy for poverty reduction and well
being of society. It is recognised that a societys economic goals are intricately intertwined with
its social and environmental goals. This realisation is also the guiding force behind IndianOils
commitment to build a strong sustainable business that is firmly rooted in the community and
demonstrates concern for the environment.
Tripple Bottom Line
IndianOils foray into renewable energy is aimed not only towards diversification of its energy
portfolio but also for alleviating energy poverty and improving energy access at the base of the
pyramid in India. Efforts are being made to improve resource efficiency in operations, especially
for key resources like energy and water and adopt the 3-R (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse)
philosophy for all types of wastes towards prevention of pollution and disposal of wastes in line
with regulatory requirements or beyond industry best practices.
While IndianOils approach has been to reach energy to all in a sustainable manner, the
Renewable Energy & Sustainable Development group was created at the Corporate level in 2010
to lend focused attention to the environmental aspect of sustainable development. Every
proposed initiative/action has to satisfactorily answer the question How does it impact society at
large and the environment?
IndianOils environmental objective is to
Green auto fuels, energy efficient technologies, shifting equilibrium of market dynamics towards
rural communities besides tapping alternative energy sources are some of the steps that are in
progress in the Corporation. The significant milestones in the journey are:
Solar Energy (Grid): IndianOil, the only CPSE to have been selected amongst the 30 shortlisted
out of about 350 participating project developers, won the competitive bid to install a 5 MW
solar power project in Rajasthan under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission Phase I
Batch I. The solar power project, was commissioned in January 2012.

has been taking up rainwater harvesting projects at several of its locations.
Eco-friendly utilization of organic waste: In order to dispose of kitchen/horticultural organic
waste in an environmentally-friendly manner, the use of Organic Waste Converters is being
promoted at locations.
Solar lanterns: With over 50% of Indias population not having access to electricity, IndianOil is
striving to provide basic energy solutions to the base of the pyramid by distributing solar
lanterns through its extensive retail network and Kisan Sewa Kendras spread across the country.
More than 30,000 Solar lanterns have been sold during 2010-11.
Awareness Generation programmes: With a view to ingrain sustainability in the DNA of every
employee of the Corporation, regular workshops and training programmes are organised to
generate awareness about sustainability issues.
Integrity Pact
IndianOil believes in total transparency, integrity and accountability in its functioning. It values
its business relationships with its numerous domestic & international contractors and vendors of
goods & services, and is committed to dealing with them in a fair and transparent manner by
maintaining the highest ethical standards in its transactions with them.
IndianOil has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Transparency
International India (TII) in January 2008, for implementing an Integrity Pact Programme focused
on enhancing transparency in its business transactions, contracts and procurement processes.
Under the MoU, IndianOil is committed to implementing the Integrity Pact in all its major

Environment
IndianOils Green Agenda
As an active partner of the Global Compact Programme of the United Nations, IndianOil is fully
Focused on sustainable development. As a dominant player, the Corporation recognises
protection of environment as a core commitment of its business.
As part of this commitment, all operating units and installations of IndianOil have a
comprehensive safety, health & environment management system in place. The facilities are
periodically reviewed and upgraded from time to time for better performance.
All IndianOil refineries fully comply with the prescribed environmental standards and
incorporate state-of-the-art effluent treatment technologies. Sustained efforts are being made
to further improve the standards by introducing new state-of-the-art technologies further
improve the existing standards and facilities.
The environment management systems of all IndianOil refineries, pipeline Installations and
major marketing installations/terminals are certified to ISO-14001 standards.
All IndianOil refineries are accredited for Occupational Health&Safety Assessment Series
(OHSAS-18001). All refineries are also rated under International Safety Rating System
(ISRS). Panipat and Gujarat Refineries are rated Level 9 in the scale of 1 to 10.
All refineries have been provided with full-fledged effluent treatment plants consisting of
physical, chemical, biological&tertiary treatment facilities. Oilivorous-S&Oilivorous-A
technologies are being used for the treatment of oily sludge and acid tar respectively. The
treated effluent is far superior to the stipulated MINAS quality and quantum standards.
Treated effluent is being reused to the extent of 65-70% in the refinery units. Panipat
Refinery continues to maintain zero discharge since commissioning in 1998.
IndianOil refineries have adopted various measures for control of gaseous emissions. These
include use of low-sulphur fuel oil, desulphurisation of refinery fuel gas, tall stacks for better
dispersion of flue gases, advanced process control systems; and energy conservation
measures to reduce fuel consumption.
The sulphur dioxide emissions at IndianOil Refineries are well below the limits prescribed by
the Ministry of Environment&Forests and State Pollution Control Boards. Ambient air
monitoring stations with automatic continuous monitoring instruments are provided at all the
refineries. In particular, Mathura Refinery has set up three ambient air quality-monitoring
stations between the refinery and the city of Agra and a fourth one at Bharatpur. Utmost care
is taken to minimise the impact of refinery operations on the air quality of the surrounding
areas so that the ambient air quality remains within the stipulated limits prescribed for
sensitive areas.
Most IndianOil refineries have commissioned secondary processing units for improving fuel
quality and reducing emissions. Some of the recent commissioning include Hydrogen unit
and Diesel Hydrotreater unit at Mathura refinery and Motor Spirit Quality projects at
Mathura and Haldia refineries. Sulphur recovery units have been installed at all the
refineries.

the defence forces to preserve the integrity of the nation, kept the home fires burning in rural
India, fuelled major transport undertakings and worked on being a `national trust for economic
prosperity. The same obligations continue with renewed vigour, as we strive year after year, to
grow our business to meet the Nation's energy needs, and at the same time increase stakeholder
value, exploring the prospect of alternative fuels and engaging people for optimum utilization of
