System Specification

IsoFraction automatic LNG sampling

and GC sample conditioning system

Technical Comments
The system must meet or exceed the
requirements of:

ISO 8943 - Refrigerated light

hydrocarbon fluids -- Sampling of
liquefied natural gas - Continuous
and intermittent methods. (2007)

Supplier Qualifications

The vendor must have an ISO 9001:2000

certificate that states the project
management, design, manufacture and
commission of instrumentation and system
for "sampling and measurement".

API 14.1 - Collecting and Handling of

Natural Gas Samples for Custody
Transfer (2006)

BS EN ISO 12838:2001 - Installations

and equipment for liquefied natural gas
- suitability testing of LNG sampling
systems (section 8 - class A for
continuous systems)

The vendor must be able to demonstrate a

track record and provide comparative
performance results from an installed system
similar to the type in this specification.

The sampling system must automatically

collect samples over the duration of a batch
providing an 'averaged' sample of the
pipeline contents, eliminating the risk of
biased manual samples.

IsoFraction automatic LNG sampling and GC sample

conditioning system

The IsoFraction LNG sampling system must

be a combined vapourising and intermittent
automatic sampling system design to
accurately and representatively re-gasify and
sample LNG for analysis. The system must
also provide a stable feed for gas
measurement using chromatography.

The system must be suitable for sampling a

complete LNG batch including the start and end
of the loading cycle when LNG is stable in the
liquid phase. The sampling system must be
unaffected by any changes in line pressure for
main line flow rates. The system must be simple
to maintain.
The system must extract three samples as per
ISO 8943:2007 to provide redundancy and
enable validation of reproducibility and sampler
performance.

Equipment Specification
The IsoFraction LNG sampling system will
comprise the following equipment:

Sample take off probe for LNG stream.

To ensure representivity, the automatic sampling

system must be able to take samples at sufficient
frequency and configured to re-pressurise the
gas samples into constant pressure samples with
a sampler discharge pressure up to 150bar
(samples must be maintained above the
dewpoint). The system must be configurable for
any duration of sample period and sample
volume (CPC Sample Cylinders are available as
0.5, 1, 2 and 4 litre), providing the flexibility to
match the sampling to future quality
requirements.

Sampling Enclosure Cabinet

A suitably insulated and heated enclosure
with double lockable doors containing the
vaporiser/control system, accumulator and
the samplers, constant pressure sample
receivers and the manual sample container.
All tubing and valves will be standard size.

The automated system must be designed to

minimise the risk of operator errors and ensure
a representative sample is provided for analysis.
The system must achieve a measurement
uncertainty in complsiance with section 8 (class
A) of BS EN ISO 12838:2001.
The system shall provide a method to fully
purge all interconnecting process lines to
prevent atmospheric contamination of the
sample. The sample conditioning system must
have a capability to provide a stable
homogenous vapourised gas feed to an on-line
chromatograph. It must include a facility to
extract manual samples at specific points
throughout the batch

Sample Take off Probe

The cabinet will include bulkhead areas for

sample entry, return, electrical connections
and other service connections.The cabinet
will have louvres to prevent gas build up
inside cabinet.

LNG Vapouriser
Multi-stage, fully insulated, IsoFraction LNG
vaporisation and control system that
ensures non-preferential and representative
vapourisation of LNG by a stable and
continuously variable heat input with a
controlled outlet and automated isolation
valve. Sized to accommodate the thermal
expansion and flow rates of the vapourised
LNG.Vapourisation rates should be high to
minimise sample lag.

LNG Accumulator
LNG Accumulator expansion vessel sized
to ensure minimum lag time and parging to
ensure homogeneity of the re-gasified LNG
presented to the sampling system. Including
a low sample point to enable sample
homogeneity validation.The accumulator
will be heat traced and insulated with a
pressure relief valve and mounted wired
and piped in the system cabinet

LNG Sampling Loop

The gasified LNG sampling loop will be

designed in accordance with the API 14.1
or equivalent sampling standard and sized
to ensure representivity and sufficient flow.
The loop will include a stable,
representative, adjustable pressurecontrolled and outlet stream for a gas
chromatograph (GC).The GC stream will
include a flow meter.

Manual sampling cylinder complete with

gauges, valves and quick connectors for
manual samples.

1 x Flow Meter
Sample meter to indicate sample loop flow.
+/-2% accuracy and 0.25% repeatability.

Junction Boxes
EEx e certified junction boxes for the
termination of the sample receiver level
switches. EEx e/d certified junction boxes,
used for the distribution of the power
supply.

3 x Gas Samplers
Positive displacement, pneumatically
operated gas samplers installed in the
enclosure with ancillaries to include
pneumatic control valve, solenoid operated
with encapsulated solenoid to meet Zone
1 IIA/B T3, 24 VDC.The gas samplers must
be fully pressure-balanced and insensitive
to variations in pipeline pressure.

Sampler Controller
Sampler controller supplied loose for
customer installation in the control room
or safe area. Modbus compliant to
communicate with the Customer DCS
SCADA system. The controller must
monitor the sampling system and the
receiver level sensors to provide
automated system shut-down when full to
avoid over-filling. Alarms must be provided
for the following upset conditions:

This sampler must operate at low inlet

pressures typically from 0.5 - 10bar and
produce a sample discharge pressure of up
to 150bar to ensure sufficient sample grabs
can be re-pressurised into the sample
receiver to ensure representivity.The
sampler must have an externally adjustable
grab size 0 to 0.5cc and be able to extract
samples at up to 30 grabs a minute.

1 x Sample Receiver Cylinder

1. Receiver full
2. Low system temperature
3. Low sample flow rate

3 x Constant Pressure Cylinder

PED certified Constant Pressure Receivers
(typically 500cc), 316 SS, complete with
gauges, valves and quick connectors for
automatic samples. Cylinder bracket fitted
with an 80% volume full switch.

System Testing
Sampling cabinet will be pressure tested
and functionally tested before shipment
and certificates for these tests will be
included.
