Maintenance Overview
This chapter contains the following topics:

Routine maintenance methods

Routine maintenance precautions

Routine Maintenance Methods

The common methods for finding and removing faults are as
follows:

Check alarms using alarm management and operation log of

BSS operation & maintenance subsystem in OMCR.
f

Observe and analyze alarm messages

Observe and analyze the alarm messages reported by
each Network Element (NE), such as, current alarms,
history alarms, and common notification messages. This
method helps to locate and resolve the faults, while the
network is running.

Observe operation log

Observe operation log through user management to trace
modifications in system parameters. Locate the relevant
terminal and detect the fault in time.

LED status analysis

Locate and remove the fault by observing the indicator status on

the panel of each board in the B8018 cabinet. The maintenance
staff should be well familiar with the status and meaning of all
indicators on each board.

Performance analysis

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

ZXG10 B8018(V1.00)In-Door Base Transceiver Station Maintenance Manual(Routine Maintenance)

Carry out performance management and signaling trace

through the performance management interface of OMCR.
The steps include the following:
f

Using performance management interface

Create different performance measurement tasks,
generate different performance report, and understand
the performance indices of BSS. By analyzing the
information, detect the distribution of load in the network
and adjust network parameters in time to improve the
network performance.

Through the signaling trace interface

Trace the signaling involved in the BSS. This helps the
relevant
engineers
to
consult
various
signaling
procedures during maintenance and discover the
signaling problems.

Fault analysis with auxiliary instruments

Use auxiliary instruments such as the test MS, signaling
analyzer, and BER analyzer to analyze, locate, and remove
faults.

Plugging/unplugging of modules
Unplug and then plug the defective modules and external
interface connectors. This resolves the fault caused by the
poor contacts.

Comparison and replacement

f

Replace the defective board with a normal board in the

similar position in order to confirm the status of the
board and slot.

Isolation
Isolate the part of the defective board from the other
relevant boards or racks. This helps to find out that if the
fault is due to the interaction between them.

Self-test

Run the self-test after powering on. The LEDs on the panel flash
in a certain pattern. Examine the board based on LED pattern.

Routine Maintenance Precautions

Following matters need attention during routine maintenance.

The equipment room should be clean. Ensure the normal

temperature and humidity conditions. Take preventions
against dust and dampness.
Ensure the stability and reliability of the primary power
system. Check the system grounding and the lightning
ground on periodic basis. In particular, check the lightning

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 1 - Maintenance Overview

protection system before storm season and after

thunderstorm to ensure that the facilities are in good
condition.

Perform regular routine maintenance. Maintain a complete

log to provide detailed records on system operation, version,
data changes, upgrading, and troubleshooting. Keep shift
records to identify the responsibilities. This helps in the
future analysis and troubleshooting.
The maintenance personnel should be well trained and have
appropriate knowledge about the equipment and networks
before taking the post. Before handling the equipment, wear
antistatic wrist strap to avoid accidents.
Running signaling tracing program is highly forbidden in the
daytime, when traffic is high. Signaling tracing can only be
performed under the conditions permitted by ZTE Customer
Service Department and in low-traffic time periods.
Make sure that the spare-parts are not affected by moisture
or mould. Ensure sufficient stock of commonly used spareparts. Keep the spare-parts separate from the defective parts
and label them for convenience.
The light intensity in the equipment room should be strong
enough for maintenance. Ensure that there should be no
dark corner that causes maintenance inconveniences.
Remove the fault without delay. Contact the local office of
ZTE CORPORATION immediately for the unresolved faults.

Place the contact information of the local ZTE office at a visible

place so that the maintenance staff can contact ZTE in time.

3. Check the input power connection of all modules.

4. Check the transmission power of Transmission modules.
Feeder Connection
Check

For feeder connection check, perform the following steps:

1. Check the relationship between cells and feeders.
2. Check the feeder cable connection, tighten it if loose.
3. Test the SWR values of feeder cables and DTRM; they must
be according to the given standard.

Power Check
Power check includes three types:

Main Power
Check

Main power check

Modules power check

Fan power check

Following steps are necessary for main power check:

1. Switch off the power-switch on the top of BTS, and the
circuit breakers on the PDM.
2. Measure the input power to the BTS and make sure the
polarity must be same.
3. Voltage range must be according to the given standard (AC
220 V with variation of 130 V ~ 300 V, DC -48 V with
variation of -57 V ~ -40 V)
Note: During the above test process, if any abnormality
occurs then turn off the power switch and troubleshoot. If power
lines are alright but the Rack does not get the input current, it
means that main-switch power threshold settings are not correct.

Module Power
Check

Module power check comes after the main power check. For
module power check, perform the following steps:
1. Turn ON the power switch on the top of BTS.
2. Turn ON the circuit breakers of every module on the PDM.
The sequence of turning on the circuit breakers should be
from top to bottom, according to position of modules in the
cabinet.
3. Observe the power indicators on the modules, if they are not
in normal state then troubleshoot immediately.
4. If any of the modules goes to rest position repeatedly, check
the board plug-in condition and its input voltage. Also, check
whether the chip is inserted correctly and chip model, saved
content, and version are correct

2. If Transceiver Unit (TRU) does not output power on turning

off the power supply, do the following:
i.

Loosen the cable connectors from the amplifier output

end to AEM.

ii. Connect the cable connectors with a through-line power

meter and a large-power load.
Caution: If the connector is not connected with any
antenna, it must be connected with a 100 W microwave power
load. If power load is connected with an antenna, then it does
not need to be connected with any load.
3. Turn on the power and add the stimulation (there is output
from the TRU).
4. Read the power of the set frequency band (GSM900: 925
MHz 960 MHz; GSM1800: 1805 MHz 1880 MHz). In case
of full power, read the output power and the gain flatness.
Normal Result

The output power is more than 60 W for GMSK and 40 W for

8PSK.

Troubleshooting

1. For 80 W BTS, if the amplifier output power fails to meet the

technical specifications, check if the TRU output level is
within the allowed range. If it is normal, then check power
amplifier for the fault.
2. Common problems of a power amplifier include the following:
f

Power amplifier module (front-end) damages

Amplifier tube (rear-end) damages

The above problems are caused by low gain and decreased

output power. If the power amplifier causes the fault, replace
the module.
Exit from Test

1. Remove the connections between the through-line power

meter, large power load, and the amplifier output end.
2. Restore the connection between the amplifier output end and
the AEM.

Board Replacement
Board Replacement Overview
The replacement of defective modules and parts is a common
and very important method used during routine maintenance.
During module replacement, it is recommended to contact the
relevant technicians or ZTE local maintenance staff for technical
support and guidance.
The following principles should be considered necessary during
the replacement of modules and parts:

Store undamaged spare parts in antistatic bags (moistureproof bags are recommended). Sort the spare parts in
cartons and label the cartons for easy identification.
Wear an antistatic wrist strap while plugging and unplugging
any module. Connect the antistatic wrist strap to the
grounding terminal of the rack. Do not touch the grounding
terminal after the connection.

Note: There is 1 M resistor connected in series between

the antistatic wrist strap and the grounding terminal, and any
touch with the grounding terminal may bypass this resistor.

While holding a module, do not touch the circuits,

components or wiring slots on the module. Do not
plug/unplug the module with extra force. The right steps are
as follows:
i.

Hold the handles of the panel and slightly uplift the

module.

ii. Align the module with the backplane and then insert the
module slightly to avoid bending the pins or slots on the
backplane or module.
iii. Tighten the fixing screws on the module after inserting
the module.

49

ZXG10 B8018(V1.00)In-Door Base Transceiver Station Maintenance Manual(Routine Maintenance)

Use a torque spanner to plug/unplug the RF cable on the

front panel of the rack. Do not use force to avoid destroying
the RF cable connector.
While installing the feeder jumper, insert the connector of
the feeder jumper into the socket of the AEM and tighten the
connector by hand.
Indicate the cause of the fault in the modules and keep the
defective modules in antistatic bags. Sort the modules and
store them as suitable.
Install a standard dummy panel in the empty slot to protect
against dust.

Make sure that the module is properly inserted in the slot.

Avoid hot plugging/unplugging during module replacement.

Ground the test instrument while using.
