Job opportunities

A modern diesel engine requires several thousand times as much air as it does fuel.
And this air needs to be nearly 100% clean for an efficient protection of your equipment.
That is why it is important to care for your air filtration system, and to use the proper air filter
elements.
In addition to this essential mission of protecting the engine, a good filter will allow for fuel
savings, will enable longer service intervals, and will reduce the maintenance costs.

The design of an air filter is based on:

- The amount of air flow that the engine needs for efficient combustion.
- The maximum resistance to this air flow that the engine can support.
- The objectives set by the engine manufacturer for filtration efficiency.
- The weight of dirt that will need to be hold during the specified service interval
The amount of air flow that the engine needs, will define the size of the filter.
For a 4 stroke engine, the flow rate is calculated as follows :
Q m3/mn = Volume per cylinder x Nb of cylinders x Rev/mn x Efficiency / 2000
In the case of a Diesel engine generating 280 cv at 2900 rev/mn, 8 cylinders of 0.7 liter each,
turbocharged with intercooler, the flow rate is :
Q m3/mn = 8 x 0.7 x 2900 x 1.85 / 2000 = 15 m3/mn
This means that the filter must handle 900 m3 each hour !!!
Filtration Efficiency and Pressure Drop will depend on the specifications of the
media.
The efficiency of a filter is measured either in % or with the Beta Ratio.
Percentage is most commonly used for the definition of air filter efficiency.
Efficiency is the percentage of particles of a specified size that the filter will stop.
For example, a filter has an efficiency of 99.5% at 3 m, if it stops 99.5% of the particles of 3
m that are sent to the inlet of the filter. A percentage of efficiency that does not specify the
size of the particles, does not mean anything.
Pressure drop is the difference of pressure between two points. In the case of air filter, it is the
difference of pressure between the inlet and the outlet. It is the restriction to the air flow,
created by the filtering media.
Filter efficiency improves as the "dust cake" builds up on the surface of the media.
C onsequently, you do not have to replace your filter just because it looks dirt !
You should either follow the service interval specified by the manufacturer of the equipment or,
Use a restriction gauge as part of your filter maintenance program.
The weight of dust that 2 filters of equal size will be able to retain will depend on
how well the filtering area is used.
The GPC "Space Lock" system, made of a flat at several places on the edge of the pleat in
order to guarantee the necessary space between them, and made of a "Hot Melt" band around
the pleats to prevent them from opening wide, was developed to guarantee the total use of the
available area of filtration.
The process to replace an air filter includes the following steps:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Wipe off all dust from the cover of the housing.
- C arefully remove the filter element to prevent dirt from falling into the air intake.
- Use a clean, moist cloth to wipe the dust away from the air intake and gasket sealing.
- If the filter has an inner element, leave it in place while servicing the outer element.
- Before you install the new element, check that it is not damaged.
- Make sure it fits properly, and that all clamps to tighten the cover will seat uniformly.
- Do not forget to inspect the old element for signs of potential engine problems.
It is not recommended to clean air filter elements.
Since all the dust cannot be removed, the service interval will get shorter.
Because there is a very high risk of damaging the filter during the cleaning process, you will
loose the warranty on the filter after cleaning.

loose the warranty on the filter after cleaning.

As a conclusion, remember these little tips:
- Do not take away the filter to inspect it. Just follow the recommended service interval, or use
a restriction gauge.
- Do not bang a filter to clean it, do not blow it, and do not wash it. Although a GPC filter would
resist to these, your maintenance program would be lost.
- Do not let anything enter the intake side. It is a direct entrance to your engine that has to be
protected by the filter.
- C heck the condition of the housing, of the cover, of the intake pipes, and of the sealing areas.
Some rust for example, would reveal a non tightening and therefore defective assembly.
- A poor filtration can let your engine be destroyed in less than 15 minutes !!!
