SPEECH ON NIAGARA FALLS

Asalamualaikum and a very good morning to Madam Sabariah and my fellow coursemates.
My name is Muhammad Faizul Bin Mohd Ridzuan and I would like to give a talk about the
most wonderful falls in the world, Niagara Falls, as my theme for this task is travel and Eco
tourism. In my message, Im going to focus on the definition of traveling is not only to have
fun, but to feel released from the day to day routine, as well as to increase health and
understanding of the world that we live in and the things that it has to offer us.
First and foremost, Niagara Falls is located between Canada and United States and it is
the second largest fall after Victoria Falls in Southern Africa. Niagara Falls is the collective
name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the
United States, more specifically between the province of Ontario and the state of New York.
The three waterfalls are the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls.
Horseshoe Falls lies on the Canadian site, American Falls and Bridal Veil Fall lies on
American sites. The Niagara Falls are very wide. It's almost four million cubic feet on
average. This wonderful places are renowned both for its beauty and source of hydroelectric
power.
Next, there are several interesting facts about Niagara Falls but I am going to highlight
two facts that I found it very interesting. The first one, one day, Niagara Falls stopped
running. On March 29, 1848, the people of Niagara Falls awoke to a strange and silent
sound. They went outside to find that the falls were no more than a frozen trickle. All day
people played at the bottom of the falls. They sledded down the slopes of the river. For 40
hours no water came from Lake Erie. Then the ice dam that had frozen in front of the river
broke up and the water came rushing down again. Next, Over 750 000 gallons of water go
over Niagara Falls every second. The average American bathtub holds about 50 gallons of
water. That means that every second, there is enough water going over the falls to 15,000
bathtubs. During the winter a lot of the water in the area is frozen into ice and snow. During
the spring, when it melts, there can be a lot more water, depending on how much snow fell
that year. In the summer most of the ice has melted and some of the streams that feed into
Lake Erie have dried to just a trickle. Even so, there is enough water going into the Niagara
River to send 250,000 gallons over the falls every second.
Lastly, there is one significant incident relating to Niagara Falls. On January 27th 1938 at
4.20p.m, the Niagara Falls Bridge or known as the Honeymoon Bridge was collapsed. This
is due to powerful wind storm and experiencing the Polar Vortex, extremely cold
temperature. The abutments of the bridge were encased with ice and huge chunks of ice
began to accumulate underneath the bridge. The bridge was built in 1898 by the Pencoyd

Bridge Company of Philadelphia. The Niagara Falls Bridge Collapse was a lesson and from
this incident, the Rainbow Bridge was built, which is just north of the Honeymoon Bridge in
1941. This bridge sits much higher above the level of the Niagara River and still functioning
today.
In conclusion, Niagara Falls remain one of the great tourist attractions in the world with
over 12 million visitors each year. There are many places on earth we can go. In my opinion,
the Niagara Falls is very beautiful and it is such an amazing place to be. With that, I end my
speech.
