Dear NAME OF PERSON OR ORGANIZATION
Camp AZDA needs your help! Camp AZDA, a program of the American Diabetes Association, is a
one-week sleepover summer camp for children with diabetes. Each year we serve approximately
200 children who suffer from type I diabetes. What do we mean by serve? Well, heres what we
mean:

Nurse Belch helps a camper test

his blood sugar because he feels
shaky.

Nurse Verbal helps a camper

infuse his pump into a teddy bear
before infusing his own pump for the
first time.

Camper Emily is already a pro at

infusing her Omnipod!

At AZDA, campers sleep in cabins (or tents, if youre age 14 or older) with their counselors
in groups of 8.

At AZDA, campers get to engage in fun summer camp activities, such as swimming,
horseback riding, water-skiing, tubing on the lake, kayaking, archery, petting zoo, tumbling,
meadow games, carnival night, a dance and much, much more!
At AZDA, campers sing songs, play games and make friends for life.
At AZDA, licensed medical staff members oversee blood sugar testing, carbohydrate intake
and insulin administration during 7 scheduled testing/treatment times per day (including
one at midnight), as well as any other time a camper might need testing and treatment.
At AZDA, diabetic counselors test their blood sugar and take insulin alongside their
campers.
At AZDA, campers learn new skills, such as administering their own insulin shot for the first
time, or infusing their own insulin pump for the first time, or how to calculate a proper
insulin dose based on ever-changing variables, such as their current blood sugar, carb
intake, activity level and an insulin sensitivity factor coefficient, which, luckily, is sometimes
a constant (did you know that 8 year old diabetics can do algebra?).
At AZDA, campers discuss diabetes openly with their cabin mates, learning that there are
other people living with diabetes, causing each camper to feel less alone and less scared
about diabetes.
At AZDA, campers interact with diabetic counselors & other camp role models, learning to
understand and believe that having diabetes can still lead to a very fulfilling life.

Theres plenty of time for fun and

games during carnival night!

Needles come in many forms! This

one is called an insulin pen.

Camp AZDA receives rave reviews each year from the campers and families we serve, and the
reason Camp AZDA is so successful is because of volunteers and donors like you.

Anyone can contribute to Camp AZDA! Can you? Read on to find out!
1. Licensed medical staff (paramedics, nurses, doctors, nurse practitioners, physicians
assistants and others) with diabetes experience apply to work the full week at camp,
helping campers in groups of 8 manage their diabetes during camp. To apply, contact
jgarcia@diabetes.org and ask for an AZDA staff interest form.
2. Adults with diabetes apply to work the full week at camp as diabetic counselors, who work
long and arduous hours each day to ensure that all campers are safe and having a fun time
at camp. To apply, contact jgarcia@diabetes.org and ask for an AZDA staff interest form.
3. Still others (diabetic or not) offer their time to help plan camp, assist with camper check-in,
check-out and perform on-site pre-camp tasks. To volunteer your time on the first day or
last day of camp, contact jgarcia@diabetes.org.
4. Individuals and organizations who dont attend camp can help in a very meaningful way.
Each year, individuals and organizations donate much needed funding to help subsidize
the significant costs of caring for 200 diabetic youngsters for a week. Your donation
ensures that we can continue offering the opportunity to attend Camp AZDA to as many
campers as possible each year.
5. Individuals and organizations provide much-needed in-kind donations from our Camp
AZDA Wish List. To request an updated copy of our wish list, see your Camp AZDA
representative or contact Julie Garcia at jgarcia@diabetes.org.
6. Still more folks find creative ways to help out, such as sponsoring an entire on-site Camp
AZDA event (carnival night, teen kayaking trip, photo scavenger hunt, etc.).
Your gift, given in any form you choose, is so appreciated; not just by the ADA, but by the
dedicated and passionate counselors, medical staff, campers and parents of Camp AZDA.
