SCOPE
1.
This Defence Standard, 02113 Part 7, specifies the requirements for the design,
inspection, testing and certification of Link Chain Lever Hoists used in HM Surface Ships and
Submarines.

Any user of this standard either within MOD or in industry may propose an amendment to
it. Proposals for amendments that are not directly applicable to a particular contract are to
be made to the publishing authority identified on Page (i), and those directly applicable to a
particular contract are to be dealt with using contract procedures.

Unless otherwise stated, reference in this standard to approval, approved, authorized and
similar terms, means by the MOD in writing.

Any significant amendments that may be made to this standard at a later date will be indicated

This standard has been reissued to reflect changes in Departmental Nomenclature due to the

This Defence Standard has been devised solely for the use of the MOD, and its contractors in
the execution of contracts for the MOD. To the extent permitted by law, the MOD hereby
excludes all liability whatsoever and howsoever arising (including but without limitation,
liability resulting from negligence) for any loss or damage however caused when the Defence
Standard is used for any other purpose.

The Lever Chain Hoists described within this standard shall comply with all
relevant European Directives' essential requirements, BS 4898, the United
Kingdom Acts and Regulations and any additional MOD(N) requirements.

Materials

Where new or alternative materials are proposed, they shall normally have been
proven to possess the properties required over a minimum period of two years.
The manufacturer shall produce evidence of such properties and time period to
the satisfaction of the MOD.
Effective Effort
a.

The load shall be moved by the operation of a lever and the direction of
movement shall be determined by means of a reliable ratchet arrangement. It
shall be possible to change the direction of movement of the load chain without
releasing the load. Means shall be provided to allow the operator to move slack
chain quickly to its required position when the hoist is not under load.
The effective effort required for the operation of Lever Chain Hoists shall be in
accordance with BS 4898.

comply with the following standards:

General
a.
All tests and inspections, both at the manufacturer's premises and after
installation of the equipment on board shall conform to the SRD.

The tests shall prove the design, material, heat treatment and methods of
manufacture used. Any change in design, material specification, heat
treatment or method of manufacture, which leads to modifications of the
mechanical properties, shall require the type tests to be conducted on the
modified component.

Proposals for type and production tests at the manufacturer's premises shall be
submitted to MOD for agreement early in the design stage of the equipment.
Subsequent waiving or modification of tests shall not be permitted without
MOD agreement.

All tests shall be carried out at room temperature; the accuracy of test load
measuring devices shall be within 2 per cent.

Ultimate Strength Test (in accordance with BS 4898) but at five times
the Safe Working Load (SWL) for one minute.
A certificate of test and examination shall be issued for each individual hoist
giving the following information:

The certificate shall declare that each hoist has been subjected to the Static
Load Test described in BR 3027, was subsequently examined by a Competent
Person and that it complies with this standard. It shall also state the name and
address of the testing establishment and the status of the signatory.

Metal surfaces bolted or riveted together are to be primed and painted prior to
assembly. Paint may be applied by a spray gun or brush. At least one priming
and one finishing coat are to be applied.

The SRD is to include a requirement that where any oils or greases are used or
required for any purpose they are, wherever possible, to be specified from those
listed in DEF STAN 015. If this is not possible it is to be brought to the
attention of the PCO and/or the Design Authority, as applicable, for resolution.
