A week after Bishop Tuttle's death on April 17, 1923, Bishop Johnson met l Newsline

with a few interested persons to discuss a memorial to Bishop Tuttle, which

he hoped would be established somewhere in St. Louis. To the diocesan
convention in January, 1924, he outlined his hopes and ambitions more fully.
He proposed a national memorial to this great man, to be built in the See
city of Jackson Kemper, the first missionary bishop to be sent by the
Episcopal Church west of the Mississippi River. He did not envision this
memorial as a merely decorative thing, but rather as a living monument to
energize spirituality. A committee of prominent citizens of St. Louis was
formed to begin the campaign for funds.

The National Council of the Episcopal Church gave the project its approval
and endorsement. Bishops all over the nation gave it their blessing. Governor
Arthur Hyde of Missouri and Mayor Henry Kiel of St. Louis accepted
honorary appointments to the committee. People from all walks of life joined
hands to raise funds to build the memorial. Nationally, $500,000 dollars was
sought. [$500,000 in 1924 had about the same buying power as $6,076,000
in 2009.] The campaign to raise funds in the parishes and city of St. Louis
began in October, 1924 with a goal of raising an additional $500,000 in
nineteen days. Chairman for the St. Louis drive was Festus Wade, a very
prominent Roman Catholic layman.

After the campaign collected funds, the architectural firm of Jamieson and
Spearl was commissioned and built the six story building, containing an
auditorium, classrooms, and athletic facilities. The cornerstone was laid
November 27, 1927, and the building dedicated November 1, 1928, on the
109th anniversary of the formation of the cathedral parish. The major address
on this occasion was delivered by the Rev. Dr. John MacIvor, pastor of
Second Presbyterian Church.
