CONFERENCIA
Summary
If life existed on Mars, evidence will be found
underground. Since 2005, Dr. Jut Wynne has
worked on several NASA funded projects to
develop technologies for detecting caves on
the Earth and Mars. He will discuss (1) the
rationale for developing techniques for
detecting caves, (2) discuss our current
understanding of terrestrial cave thermal
behavior, (3) identify times of day when cave
openings on Earth have the maximum thermal
contrast with the surrounding surface regolith,
and (4) discuss future directions of this
research. Wynne and colleagues conducted a
multi-year monitoring study of thermal
behavior of caves in the Atacama Desert of
northern Chile and the Mojave Desert of
southern California USA, and captured aircraft
borne thermal imagery of Mojave Desert caves.

Jut Wynne is a scientist who has bushwacked
through the jungles of Belize, rappelled into the
deepest volcanic pit on the Big Island of Hawaii,
endured the worlds driest desert in northern Chile,
used cutting edge instruments onboard NASA
aircraft, and traveled to the most remote inhabited
place on earth, Rapa Nui (Easter Island) - just to learn
more about caves and the secrets they contain.
