BSc Mathematics and Philosophy
UCAS Code GVC5

From the ancient philosophies of Plato to Leibniz, Hume and

Bertrand Russell, properties of logical analysis have helped to
shape philosophical thought for centuries. Studying mathematics
with philosophy will provide you with a thorough grounding in
mathematical structures and techniques whilst allowing you to
explore a range of philosophical concepts (such as logic, language
and political philosophy).
In Year 1 you will study key topics, including:
Philosophy of Descartes: an introduction to university-level
philosophical thinking via a study of Descartes, giving you a
chance to defend and/or reconsider your present philosophical
attitudes.
Numbers and Vectors: an introduction to three outstandingly
influential developments from 19th century mathematics:
complex numbers, vectors and the rigorous notion of limit.
In Year 2 you will study a range of core and optional modules over
semesters 1 & 2, topics include:
Vector Calculus: study of a wide variety of physical systems, such
as fluid mechanics and electromagnetism that can be described
by vector and scalar fields.
Formal Logic: examine the formal theories of logic in detail and
learn about modern developments in non-classical logic.

In Year 3 you will undertake an autonomous piece of research

work, for example a dissertation, community-based project or
portfolio for your final year project. This may cover either or both
of your joint honours subjects. You will also study core and
optional modules. Topics include:

Survival Analysis
Quantum Mechanics
Coding Theory
Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics
The Structure of Reality
Kants Ethical Theory

Approximately equal time is spent on the two subjects.
Variants
This is a three year full time degree. There is the opportunity to do
our Work Placement scheme or Study Abroad scheme, which
would extend it to a four year degree.
