ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Date : 22 / 03 /2015
STAGE 01 : PROJECT DIFINITION AND GOLAS SETTING

The Architect
General Responsibilities
The primary role of the architect in a LEED project is to design a building that takes
into consideration the climate of the location, has an efficient envelope, and incorporates
green materials that make it an inherently efficient building. The architect must
collaborate with other team members to make decisions that are beneficial from a whole
building perspective. The general responsibilities of the architect are, but not limited
to, the following:
1. Work with the LEED PM to schedule green charrettes and goal setting workshops early in the
design process.
2. Ensure all green design features required for compliance with LEED credits are incorporated
in drawings and specifications.
3. Coordinate with consultants, especially the energy simulation expert, to optimize the building
orientation and envelope.
4. Specify green materials and products, which also meet LEED credit requirements. Consult
with green LEED consultant in preparation of specifications.
5. Perform or participate in post-occupancy evaluation of the project.
LEED Credit Responsibilities
The credits that the architect is responsible for will vary from project to project depending
on the responsibilities of the LEED PM. While the final documentation may be
done by another team member, the architects input is required on a number of credits.

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) Engineers

General Responsibilities
The MEP engineering team has a significant role to play because the three prime
areaswater, energy, and air qualitythat a LEED building addresses require their
input. Depending on the level of expertise, the mechanical engineer may also perform
energy simulations to optimize the building performance. This section is written with
the assumption that an energy simulation expert will be engaged for that purpose. The
responsibilities of the energy simulation expert have been described separately in this
chapter. The general responsibilities of the MEP engineering team (without energy
simulation) are, but not limited to, the following:
1. Work with the energy simulation expert to design building HVAC and lighting systems that are
optimized for the whole buildings energy performance.
2. Work with the architect to ensure that opportunities related to climate, orientation, and
massing are evaluated and implemented to ensure that the buildings mechanical systems
are sized appropriately.
3. Provide innovative cost-effective solutions that will make the buildings systems and operations more efficient.
4. Design building systems in accordance with the microclimate of the building.
5. Provide input regarding the system choices based on life-cycle impact and energy use.
6. Coordinate with lighting consultant to develop appropriate lighting layouts and specifications.
7. Design building ventilation systems in accordance with ASHRAE 62.1-2007 and thermal comfort parameters in accordance with ASHRAE 55-2004.
8. Ensure that equipment selection, adhesive choices, material selection, and construction
methods reflect LEED goals.
9. Work with the CxA and the contractor to implement commissioning related activities.
10. Engage in measurement and verification studies and building performance monitoring after
occupancy, if required.
11. Design plumbing systems and select fixtures to meet the targeted water reduction goals.
LEED Credit Responsibilities
The MEP engineering team is directly responsible for the implementation and documentation
of a number of LEED credits. The design of the mechanical, electrical, and
plumbing systems as well as the choice of equipment can contribute up to 40 points.
Table 2.8 describes the critical credits that need input from the MEP team.
