RUBRICS IN RATING A THESIS TITLE

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The title signifies a very timely and significant contribution to the
needs of society in general and to the agency in particular. It gives a very specific and
accurate index of the main theme of the study. It is explicit on the variable(s) to be
investigated, the subjects involved, and the place of study. It gives the reader an instant
grasp of what the study is all about. It excites the readers intellectual curiosity to look
further into the study. It answers the questions of what, who and where.
_____3.SATISFACTORY. The title provides a fairly accurate index of the main theme of the study. It
is, however, short or deficient in two of the aspects mentioned in the 5-point score category
above.
_____1.UNSATISFACTORY. In evidence are three or more deficiencies in the aspects explained in
the preceding 5-point score category. It hardly gives an accurate index of the main theme of
the study. It is verbose, as it contains unnecessary phrases such as, A Study of, An
Analysis of, An Appraisal of, etc., which should have been deleted. It is long-winding with
many superfluous words that only serve to distract the reader from knowing what the focus
of the study is.
RUBRICS IN RATING AN INTRODUCTION

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The introductory section provides a very good presentation of the
prevailing problematic situation that prompted the investigation. These are discussed
critically at the global, national, and/or local levels. It attacks some generally-held
assumptions/theories that are the subject of concern. Gaps on available knowledge in the
subject are, content-wise and methodology wise, are pointed out. Conflicting evidences,
questionable principles or practices and/or uncharted areas on the subject are critically
presented and explained to provide the rationale for the study.
_____3 SATISFACTORY. The introductory section short or deficient in two of the aspects mentioned
in the preceding 5-point score category. Discussion on the current problem situation is purely
descriptive, devoid of critical comments. Expositions are mainly focused at the local level.
Some gaps in existing knowledge on the are cited in support of the rationale for the study.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies in the aspects explained in the above 5point score category are in evidence. The introductory section is apparently a hodge-podge
of quoted statements on the existing problem situation which resulted in disjointed cluttered
ideas that hardly support the rationale for the study. Or no rationale was presented as to the
reasons for undertaking the study.

RUBRICS IN RATING THE MAIN PROBLEM

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The main problem embodied a very significant contribution to

societal needs in general and to the researchers field of interest in particular. It presents in
a sentence or two the purpose, the variables, and the subjects of the study which

2
substantially conform to the wordings in the title of the study. It focuses on the relationship
between two or more variables instead of just a normative survey type of problem.
_____3 SATISFACTORY. In the main problem statement, two deficiencies in the aspect mentioned
in the 5-point score category above are noted. It is of limited significance in its contribution
to the existing body of knowledge on the subject. The main problem statement deviates to
some extent from being consistent with the title of the study.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies in the aspects embodied in the above 5point score category are in evidence. There are several ill-chosen words that tend to give a
nebulous idea of what the main problem is.
RUBRICS IN RATING THE SUB-PROBLEMS

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The sub-problems cover the very essential aspects or variables that
serve to expand or delimit the main problem statement. Each sub-problem is apparently a
researchable unit by itself. It is specific and concisely a researchable unit by itself. It is
specific and concisely stated either in question form or in declarative form. As a whole, the
sub-problems represent relevant and timely issues that are worth investigating to support
the main problem statement.
_____3 SATISFACTORY.

The sub-problem statement are found short or deficient in two of the

aspects explained in the preceding 5-point score category. Some of the sub-problem
statements are mere duplications or extensions of others already embodied therein. Other
are too detailed and should have been deleted as they are actually the same as the detailed
questions found in the questionnaire or research instrument covering only one researchable
unit or topic.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies in the aspects covered in the preceding 5point score category are noted. Some sub-problems overlap in ideas with one another these
should have been dispensed with as they belong to one researchable unit of which the
pertinent sub-problem is already stated. Or the sub-problems are stated in the null
hypothesis form which should be deleted and transferred to the appropriate section; that is
the Null Hypothese.
Yes_______

No______

If YES, how would you rate the section on the assumptions of the study?

3
_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The assumptions or assertions on the variable(s) under study help
speciy or clarify the conditions under which it is likely to occur. They help elaborate or
delimit the theoretical foundation of the study. They are stated in very clear and concise
terms.
_____3 SATISFACTORY.

The stated assumptions are short or deficient in one of the aspects

explained in the above 5-point score category. A few are not clearly stated and some are
irrelevant.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Very much evidence are two or more deficiencies in the aspects
explained in the above 5-point score category. The statement of assumptions tends to
confuse the reader as to the authors intention. They manifest vagueness and ambiguity. A
preponderance of unnecessary words is noted which only serves to derail the authors
thinking as to what the term, assumption, means.

RUBRICS IN RATING THE THEORETICAL / CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Is a theoretical / conceptual framework section included in the study?
Yes____

No____

If YES, how would you rate the section covering the theoretical/conceptual framework of the
study?
_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The text and schematic diagram of the theoretical/conceptual
framework are discussed and objectively portrayed, respectively, in the section. Each
embodies the (1) theory, (2) indicators, and (3) variables involved in the study. The
researchers theory or theories are well explained in the text, and are duly supported by
well-known theorists, psychologists, social scientists, experts, etc. The indicators or criteria
by which the pertinent variables in the sub-problems are to be measured are given. These
variables are classified into independent, dependent, and/or moderator variables. Each of
the involved indicators and the corresponding variables are operationally defined and

4
discussed to show how each was derived from the theory/theories and how each is to be
used in the study. As a whole, it is apparent that these concepts are relevant to the research
problem under investigation.
_____3.SATISFACTORY. The theoretical/conceptual presentation in the text and in the schematic
diagram is short or deficient in two to three of the aspects covered in the preceding 5-point
score category. Some of the indicators and variables presented in the diagram are not
operationally defined in the text.
_____1.UNSATISFACTORY. Four or more deficiencies or flaws in the aspects described in the 5point score category above are noted. Only the text of the theoretical/conceptual framework
is presented without accompanying schematic diagram.

RUBRICS IN RATING THE NULL HYPOTHESIS

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The hypotheses are stated in the null form of no difference or of
no relationship between and among the involved variables. A very clear and objective
direction is given as to how the hypothesized variables are to be investigated. They are very
well-formulated and relevant to the main problem of the study and its sub-problems. Each
stated hypothesis jibes with the pertinent sub-problems. Each stated hypothesis jibes with
the pertinent sub-problem statement. On sub-problems which are hypothesis-fee, it is so
stated at the outset of the section. Or only the pertinent hypothesized sub-problems
numbers are stated before presenting the corresponding null hypotheses in said section.
_____3 SATISFACTORY. The hypothesis statements are short or deficient in two of the aspects
explained in the above 5-point score category. The stated hypothesis are in the form of the
affirmatively-stated research hypothesis instead of the null hypothesis. The latter form
should have been used as it is the appropriate one for statistical treatment purposes.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies in the aspects given in the above 5-point
score category are noted. The hypotheses are stated either in vague or ambiguous terms or
are too verbose. Apparently, there is lack of understanding as to what the terms, null
hypothesis, research hypothesis, and alternative hypothesis, mean.

RUBRICS IN RATING THE IMPORTANCE/SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

5
_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The study is a very important and significant one. Its solution is of
immerse value to society in general and to the authors field or interest in particular. It
involves a new or an existing theory that is profoundly useful to the agency, its
administrator, personnel, teachers, students, and to the researcher himself. Apparently, it is
a note worthy contribution to the existing body of knowledge and/ or the practitioners in the
field.
_____3 SATISFACTORY.

The section on the importance of significance of the study is short or

efficient in two of the aspects mentioned in the above 5-point score category. While the
study is of importance to the researchers field of specialization, yet its benefits to society as
a whole are not apparent.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies in the aspects discussed in the preceding 5point sore category are noted. The study is hardly significant or important to society or to
the authors field of interest. It is a mere replicated study of existing theories, knowledge,
and/or practices that were already conducted previously. Its solution is only applicable to the
institution concerned. There is a clear manifestation that the study is an overused one in
terms of the variables used. Its solution is hardly of any consequence to society or the
agency concerned.

RUBRICS IN RATING THE SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The study is sufficiently delimited in its scope. It is not too global;
that is the problem, geographic area, time frame, and the number of subjects or
respondents are adequate enough to render the study wieldy for in-depth treatment. The
rationale behind the delimitation of the study is sound, as well explained.
_____3 SATISFACTORY. The section on the scope and delimitation is found wanting in two of the
aspects explained in the 5-point score category above. Its coverage is neither too global nor
too narrow in scope. The problem, geographic area, time frame, and the number of subjects
or respondents are reasonable delimited for a satisfactory treatment. How ever, no reasons
were advanced as to why the study had to be delimited.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies or flaws in the aspects described in the
above 5-point score category are in evidence. The problem, geographic area, time frame,

6
and/or the number of subjects/respondents are too limited in scope for adequate treatment
of the same.

RUBRICS IN RATING ORGANIZATION OF THE CHAPTERS OF THE STUDY

How would you rate the section on the organization of the chapters of the study?

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The section on the organization of the chapters is very clearly
presented. The gist of each chapter is described very briefly in a statement or two, thereby
providing the reader with a preview of what is its main focus. The choice of words gives
clarity and conciseness to the preview of each chapter.

_____3 SATISFACTORY.

The section is found wanting in two of the aspects explained in the

preceding 5-point score category. Each chapters preview gives a rather lengthy discussion
which is unnecessary.

_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies in the aspects mentioned in the above 5point score category are in evidence. Each preview of the chapter presented is discussed in
detail. This should have been shortened to only a statement or two.

7
RUBRICS IN RATING THE DEFINITION OF TERMS USED

_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The important terms that are found in the title of the study,
including other unusual and technical terms, are defined operationally and/or conceptually.
Each term or variable is defined in the way it is to function, operate, or be measured for
purposes of studying it scientifically. Each defined term is stated in very clear and precise
words that give the reader full understanding as to its meaning and how it is to be used in
the study. The place of study is defined and described. It is accompanied by a map showing
the place and its surrounding vicinity.
_____3 SATISFACTORY. The section is found deficient in two of the aspects explained in the above
5-point score category. The terms are defined either conceptually or operationally some are
dictionary definitions.

_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. In evidence are three or more deficiencies in the aspects enumerated in
the above 5-point score category. Practically all of the defined terms are merely dictionary or
conceptual definition.

RUBRICS IN RATING REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

Related Literatures
How would you rate the section on related literature?
_____5.VERY SATISFACTORY. The study is sufficiently delimited in its scope. It is not too global;
that is the problem, geographic area, time frame, and the number of subjects or
respondents are adequate enough to render the study wieldy for in-depth treatment. The
rationale behind the delimitation of the study is sound, as well explained.
_____3 SATISFACTORY. The section on the scope and delimitation is found wanting in two of the
aspects explained in the 5-point score category above. Its coverage is neither too global nor
too narrow in scope. The problem, geographic area, time frame, and the number of subjects

8
or respondents are reasonable delimited for a satisfactory treatment. How ever, no reasons
were advanced as to why the study had to be delimited.
_____1 UNSATISFACTORY. Three or more deficiencies or flaws in the aspects described in the
above 5-point score category are in evidence. The problem, geographic area, time frame,
and/or the number of subjects/respondents are too limited in scope for adequate treatment
of the same.

Review of Related Literature

This chapter starts with a very brief introductory paragraph concerning the researchers
exploration of related literature and studies on the research problem. It states the main coverage of
the said chapter to wit: (1) Related Literature and (2) Related Studies.
Suppose to be in each topical section is organized according to subject area or variables that
is related to each of the sub-problems under investigation.
In this particular study the review of related literature is not thoroughly organized. Although
it embodies some cited theories, principles, concepts, facts, ideas and vies regarding the concepts,
variables or aspects as gleaned from books, periodicals, journals, monographs and other scholarly
publications perused by the researcher. But these things are not thoroughly discussed in this
research.
Suppose to be the main purpose of the review of related literature review is a means to
provide the thesis writers with theoretical background of information on what is already known in
the area of interest and what still needs to be done for the research undertaking. It also barely

9
furnishes the writers with ample research possibilities by which to expand, modify and improve
parts of their planned study to make it more novel and noteworthy. Hence it is rated satisfactory.
Critique on Methodology
The methodology is unsatisfactory in nature because it lacks several components of chapter
III (Methodology). This section briefly describes the type of research design/method used.
The details on the research instrument must include its nature, purpose, construction,
content-validation, pre-testing and rationale for its use are explained. Tests and research
instruments that are standardized are preferred over self-constructed ones as the former already
been validated nation-wide and are universally-accepted for public consumption and commercial
use. In this particular instance it is not really clear if the research instrument are fully validated.
It also includes research locale which describes the place where the study was conducted
and the rationale behind its choice.
In the sampling procedure doesnt fully describe in details the choice of subjects for the
study. Its purpose is to show how the sample groups were selected and whether it is representative
of the population of interest.
In the research procedure, it doesnt really contains the step by step procedure used in the
administration of the research instrument of the study. When describing the administration of the
research instrument occurrences and circumstances which may have affected the research process
are honestly admitted.
Critique on the Analysis, Presentation of Data and on Summary, Conclusion and
Recommendation
In the analysis and presentation of data, it was presented objectively to prevent biases in
the interpretation of data.
All the related tables that contain the data for each sub-problem topic are sequentially
arranged, presented and discussed. The meaning of each of the significant findings were gathered
from the data per table were discussed. Observed trends, variable relations, and the cause and
effect relationship were explained in terms of the statistical measures used. Due precaution and
restraint was exercised in the data analysis and interpretation to avoid the possibility of causing the
reader to assign more meaning and importance to the findings of the study.
The summary of the study restated the main problem and sub-problems, the null hypothesis
and the number of subjects or respondents involved in the study.
It also indicates the major findings of the study. The summary on significant findings is
organized y topics that jibe with the sub-problems.
The conclusion was briefly worded presented in a general statement that answers directly, in
sequential order, each of the questions or sub-problems/hypothesis that were posed at the outset of
the study.
The recommendation of the study envisions how such the findings could be applied in
resolving the problem or issue and in the betterment of the existing situation as a whole.
In general, based on the criteria in thesis critiquing this part of the manuscript can be
classified as satisfactory.
