Association for Gifted Children

During her 14 years with Indian Mills Elementary School, Principal Nicole Moore has focused on
supporting all students. Every
district has different kids with
different needs.
There are laws that protect
those children with special needs,
but the children on the other end
of the spectrum need to be appropriately addressed as well, according to Moore. Indian Mills
makes it a priority to make sure
gifted children get their academic
needs met.
Because of these efforts, Moore
was recently honored as the New
Jersey Association for Gifted
Childrens Administrator of the
Year at the NJAGC Awards Celebration held at the organizations
Annual Conference on Friday,
March 6.
The NJAGC is the state chapter
of the National Association for
Gifted Children that was estab-

lished in 1991.

advocating for
the needs of
gifted
children, promoting programs,
networks and

I was totally surprised to have
won this award, Moore said. The
surprise came from the fact that
she did not apply for the award;
she was nominated by Indian
Mills teachers and students parents.
In his nomination letter, parent
Gary Winger said it was no question Moores work for the schools

Regional school taxes could increase for residents

LRHSD board of education approves tentative budget at last weeks meeting

Shamong Township residents could be
paying more on their regional school tax
bill this year.
The Lenape Regional High School District board of education unanimously approved the district's tentative 2015-16 school
year budget at last week's meeting.
The tentative budget includes an increase of $227.86 for a Shamong Township
resident with the average assessed home of
$308,080. The regional school tax rate increased 7.36 cents per $100 of assessed
value.
The total budget is $154,058,531, an increase of 1.4 percent from last year. Most of
the budget is funded with taxpayer money,
with $114,362,944 expected to come from
taxpayers in the district's eight municipalities.
Details on the tentative budget were not

discussed at the meeting. The budget was

passed so it be submitted to the Burlington
County superintendent's office prior to
March 20.
District officials plan to discuss the
budget in full during the public hearing,
scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 at the
district administration building in Shamong at 7:30 p.m.
In other news:
A pair of late winter snow days on
March 5 and 6 are having an impact on the
school calendar.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said
graduation in the district has been shifted
to June 18 because the school calendar has
been extended to make up for the snow
days the district has had this year.
We've had a total of four snow days so
far this year, Birnbohm said.
The snow days are also having an effect
on the board of education's meeting schedule.

The meeting scheduled for June 17 has

been moved back one week to Wednesday,
June 24, to allow the meeting to take place
after the end of the school year.
In what has become a spring tradition, schools in the Lenape District have
begun their fourth annual Give to Goodwill
drive for 2015.
Students, faculty and staff at all four
high schools are encouraged to donate gently-used clothing, accessories, toys, books
and other small household items and place
them into a donation bin located in each
school's parking lot. Since 2012, the
district has collected 109,387 pounds of donations.
Through the drive's first two weeks,
Cherokee High School jumped out to an
early lead, having contributed 0.84 pounds
of donations per student. Cherokee has
won all three of the past Give to Goodwill
drives. The competition runs through
April 17.

program, offering free admission to theme parks during the 2015
season for students who completed a minimum of six hours of recreational reading outside of school. Pictured are just some of those

in Six Flags Read to Succeed
Six Flags Theme Parks once
again sponsored the Read to Succeed incentive program, offering
free admission to their Six Flags
theme parks during the 2015 season.
But, for those who wanted free
admission, they had to earn it.
Six Flags set up its program
with one healthy requirement:
students must complete a minimum of six hours of recreational
reading outside of school.
Each participating district was
encouraged to establish the timeframe for eligibility. Students at
Indian Mills School were encouraged to complete their reading
logs between December and the
end of February.
Sherry DuBoff, one of the Response to Intervention reading
teachers at Indian Mills School,
said they could read books, magazines, newspapers or comic
books, but homework assignments were specifically prohibited to be logged as part of the six
hours.
It contained all the earmarks
of the perfect catalyst to supercharge an already robust reading
program promoted daily in each
grade in the school, DuBoff said.

All the teachers at IMS in

grades kindergarten through
fourth encouraged their students
to jump into it with both feet to
meet or exceed the goal, and they
did just that.
Students who achieved the
reading goal were honored at Indian Mills Elementary School's
kickoff assembly for the National
Education Association's Read
Across America celebration, an
annual reading motivation and
awareness program that calls for
every child in every community
to celebrate reading on and
around March 2, the birthday of
beloved children's author Dr.
Seuss.
In the final tally, IMS recorded
77 students from all grades who
successfully completed the reading challenge, almost 20 percent
of the schools enrollment. According to a Six Flags spokesperson, all students will receive their
free admission tickets in May, a
well-deserved reward for a
tremendous achievement.
It must be true; reading really
is fun-damental.
And, as Dr. Seuss always said,
"You're never too old, too wacky,
too wild, to pick up a book."

with the quality of our gifted program at IMS. This comes full circle to my support of Ms. Moore,
Winger wrote. It is my understanding that we would not be enjoying this high level of gifted education without the help and
drive of Ms. Moore. In these times
of budget cuts, I have been assured that my son can count on a
high quality gifted program,
which we are very grateful for.
The IMS gifted program,
IMAGE, provides pull-out instruction for those identified as
gifted students. It focuses not only
on enriching a childs academics
but also his or her social-emotional skills, something the school
views as equally important to the
overall growth of the child.

We want to meet the students

where their need is, Moore said.
According to parent Michelle
Rath, this enrichment is working.
I am astonished at the effects
this challenge to my sons intellect have had on his maturity, demeanor and overall individual
personal growth. He has blossomed and I believe it is a direct
result of the challenge he receives on a daily basis when it
comes to math, Rath wrote in
her nomination letter.
Teamwork is key in the success
of a program such as IMAGE.
Moore could not say enough
about the help that IMAGE
teacher Karen Clementi has provided along the way. Clementi has
been teaching the whole time
Moore has been at Indian Mills,
and they have worked closely to
maximize the potential of
IMAGE.

Her intelligence, accomplishments and professionalism in the
field of education make her most
deserving of this honor, Clementi wrote. She strives to provide
the best for all students!
IMAGE was in place since before Moore joined IMS 14 years
ago. Prior to her principal years,
she was a teacher in the Mt. Laurel school system and an assistant
principal at Blackwood Elementary School.
As far as the future goes,
Moore wants to focus on building

Volunteer Center seeks award nominees

The Volunteer Center of
Burlington County announced it
is seeking nominees for its prestigious Lloyd Ritter Community
Service Award and is encouraging members of the public to submit names of individuals who deserve to be honored because of
their outstanding records of community service and volunteerism.
Volunteer Center President
Kimberly Mattson said this is the
first time that the public has been
actively asked to participate in
the nomination process. But
thats not all unlike past years,
the Volunteer Center also is looking to honor as many as three
Burlington County residents at
its annual awards dinner in the
fall.
We are extremely proud of
our 16 past recipients, each of

whom was honored at our annual

awards dinner, Mattson said.
However, we also realize there
are many unsung, low-profile
community activists who need to
be publicly recognized, applauded, and formally thanked, for
their distinguished volunteer
service.
That said, we are asking county residents to bring to our attention their neighbors, coworkers
and acquaintances they deem
worthy of the Community Service Award, and take the time to
provide us with some background information, Mattson
said.
The nomination form can be
easily accessed at the Volunteer
Centers website at www.volunteercenterburlingtoncounty.org.
The form can be filled out and

submitted electronically, or printed and mailed to the Volunteer

Center at Burlington County College, Parker Center 122, County
Route 530, Pemberton, NJ.

The deadline for nominations
is April 14.
The Volunteer Center most recently honored Robert and Ellen
Healey of Lumberton, whose
unique equine program provides
education and guidance to children in need or facing personal
challenges.
The Healeys also support charitable activities in other countries, including the Ebola-stricken Sierra Leone.
