output,withallfinalworkcarriedoutinPhotoshop.

Thereisgreatpowerinaneffectiveconceptdrawing.Hoveringsomewherebetweenahandsketchandarealisticrendering,ithasthe
abilitytocommunicatethedesignintentandconveythespiritofplacewhileavoidinggettingmiredinthesmalldetailsofamore
polishedpiece.
Tome,theremaynotbeamorefluidcombinationofsoftwarethanSketchUpandPhotoshopwhenusedtogether.Thespeedanddepth
ofbothprogramscreateanextremelypotentpipelineforproducingquickimagerythatsellideas.Thefollowingtutorialillustratesjust
howquicklyyoucandevelopaneffectiveconceptdrawingusingjustthesetwoprograms.Thisimageusedinthetutorialwasdoneasa

NextIllexportacolorselectionLayer.Thisisachievedbypaintinglargeareasofthesamematerialsveryvibrantcolorswithinyour
SketchUpmodel.ThiswillgreatlyaidyouinyourselectionsforpaintinginPhotoshop.Onceyouhavecoloredandexportedyour
image,youdontneedtosavethesecolorsandcanjustundothemwithinSketchUpuntilyourebacktoyouroriginalcolors.

ExportColorSelectionLayer

OneshortcutthathelpsinbothselectionsandlayeringinPhotoshopistojustexportcertainelementsfromSketchUp.Illusuallyjust
exportcertainpiecesthatareimportanttothescene.Inthiscase,Iexportedoutjustthebridgesectionandthetablesandchairswith
theirlargeumbrellas.Intheimagebelow,youcanseethatIvejustdoneaSelectAllwithinmymodel,then,holdingSHIFT(ona
mac),Ideselectthebridgepiece.IthenHidetherestofthemodelandIamjustleftwiththeelementIwishtoexport.

onlyhavetheelementweneedonatransparent(andnotwhite)background.MakesureyouhaveTransparentBackgroundcheckedin
theappropriatedialoguebox.

ExportasPNGFile
MachasbettersupportfortransparentimageexportstraightfromSketchUp,thisoptionisnotavailableonPC.IfyouhaveLayOut,
thereisaworkaroundforPCuserstoobtainatransparentbackground.LayOutisakindofapresentationtoolforSketchUp,thatcomes
withtheProversion.Thisworkaroundwillbeofnousetothoseusingthefreeversion(SketchUpMake)asLayOutdoesntcomewith
it.YouwillhavetoresorttoremovingthebackgroundinPhotoshop(MagicWandpossibly).
GotoWindow>Styles>Edit,thencheckthroughtheoptionsuntilyougettosomelittlecheckboxesthatsaySkyand
Ground.TurnoffSkyandGroundandmakesurethatthebackgroundissettoperfectlywhite(RGBvalues:255,255,255).
SaveitandgotoFile>SendtoLayOut.
OnceopeninLayout,saveitasaPDF.ItwillthenopeninPhotoshopwithtransparentbackground.
OnceIhaveexportedallmyelementsas.pngsfromSketchUp,ImreadytoworkinPhotoshopnow.

LayerLines.IthensetthisLayertoMultiplyinorderforthepaintLayerstoshowthroughbeneathit.IthenplaceinmyShadow
LayerinthisfileandsettheShadowtoMultiplytoo.
Tomakesureyourfilescomeinpreciselyontopof(orbelow)oneanother,gotothefileyouwanttoimport,doaSelectAll
command,thencomebacktoyouroriginalfileandPasteinPlace.IlldothisforallthefilesIveexportedfromSketchUp.Youll
noticethatyourelementsshouldcomeinexactlywhereyouwantthemaswell.

OnetechniqueIhavebeenusingforyearsistoimportsomesortofpapertexture.Ifindthishelpsroughenupthedrawingabit,adds
greatdepthandhelpstokeeptheimageconceptualinnature.Youcanfindcountlesspapertexturesonline.IllbringintheoneIlike,
Desaturateit,thenplaywiththeLayersettingsuntilIgetatexturethatfeelsprettygood.Itsimportanttofindthesettingsthatworkfor
you,sohavefunandexperiment.

ImportaPaperTexture
YoullseethatIhavenowgotsomegreattexturewithintheShadowLayeralreadyandmorewillcontinuetoshowthroughonceI
continuepainting.Atthispoint,IllalsomesswiththeHue/SaturationofmyShadowLayertobringitfromadeadgreytoamore
naturalhue.Finally,whilestillontheShadowLayerIllBurninsomeareastomimicabitofAmbientOcclusion.

below,IhavepaintedintheskyonitsownLayerusingtheGradientToolandthenlayeredinaphotographofsomeofthemountains
thatexistnearthesiteontheirownLayer.Thisnotonlymakesiteasytoediteachpaintedarea,butitalsoallowsforquickselectionsof
everythingonthatlayer(Onamac,holdtheCommandkeyovertheLayerthumbnailimageandclick).
