This Discussion Topic has 2 parts.

Part 1:
Locate a primary source for a research review that supports your research problem and research
question(s). For this source include the following information:
-description of search strategy including databases and online resources used and search terms;
-brief description of the study including research problem, research methodology, and findings
from the study;
-rationale explaining how article supports your research problem and question(s).

Developing search strategy for relevant and appropriate literature is important component of any
research project. Creating such a strategy gives you the opportunity to locate valuable and significant
resources to answer the research question. For the purpose of my project I used research strategies
involving multiple online databases, including MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Cochrane, and also evaluating
articles and grey resources. CINAHL is an important electronic database: It covers references to virtually
all English-language nursing and allied health journals, as well as to books, dissertations, and selected
conference proceedings in nursing and allied health fields (Polit, & Beck, 2011,p.100).
The primary source that I chose to evaluate and include in my literature review is the article
Evaluation of a Compassion Fatigue Resiliency Program for Oncology Nurses. The study was designed
in order to evaluate the efficiency and advantages gained form interventions in the control of compassion
fatigue and burnout among nurses in oncology unit. Nurses form the oncology department were invited
to participate in the study and had to meet certain criteria. During the study period they had to attend a
five-week program involving five 90-minute sessions on compassion fatigue resiliency. A pre- and posttest design, using repeated measures, was conducted over six months. (Potter, Deshields, Berger, Clarke,
Olsen,& Chen, 2013, p.180). In addition, the authors of the study included variety of instruments during

the sessions to gather data and evaluate the research problem. Such an instruments include: The Maslach
Burnout Inventory (MBI)Human Services Survey, The ProQOL IV, The Impact of Event Scale -Revised,
and The Nursing Job Satisfaction Scale.
The results outlined in the study describe and measure the importance of measures that need to be
taken to reduce the occurrence of burnout and compassion fatigue. The authors also underlined the
prevalence of this negative trend among nurses and stated the need for actions to be taken. Based on the
results of the study participants were able to received useful strategies for managing stress at

work and home (Potter, Deshields, Berger, Clarke, Olsen, & Chen, 2013, p.185).
The article supports my research problem and question in a way that provides nurses with
measures that can be taken for the relive of compassion fatigue and burnout. The study outlines
education strategies and methods that can be implemented in clinical setting to support nursing
staff in their professional and personal life. Furthermore, the ability of nurses to cope with the
everyday stress and emotional exhaustion are important factors for patient care improvement and
job satisfaction. The program described in the study gives nurses the opportunity to develop
coping skills which can be used for performance improvement and more satisfying practice.

Part 2:
Locate a secondary source for a research review that supports your research problem and research
question(s). For this source include the following information:
- description of search strategy including databases and online resources used and search terms;
- brief description of the study including research problem, research methodology, and findings
from the study;
- rationale explaining how article supports your research problem and question(s)

For the purpose and to locate secondary source that support my research review and
supports my research problem and research question similar strategies were used. Current
publications including the time period between 2010 and 2013 were included using healthcare
databases such as Ovid, ProQuest, PsycINFO, and CINAHL Plus, as well as Coogle Scholar.
Key words such as burnout, compassion fatigue, coping skills and nursing professionals were
included in the search. Selected article had to meet certain criteria, such as relevance to the
topic, credibility and validity of the study. Implementing the search strategies outlined above
resulted in the selection of the article A systematic review of stress and stress management
interventions for mental health nurses, written by Deborah Edwards. The article focused on
stress management techniques among mental health nurses and recognizes common stress factors
that lead to job satisfaction and burnout. The study was designed using the method of systematic
review including materials form definite time period. Studies included in the review were
research articles from1966 to 2000 reporting studies undertaken in the UK that specifically
identified participants as mental health nurses( Edwards, & Burnard,2003, p.170).
Based on the results from the literature review some of the most common and relevant
stress factors were administration and organizational concerns, client-related issues, heavy
workload, interprofessional conflict, professional self-doubt, home/work conflict, staffing levels,
changes in the health service, poor supervision, poor quality of social support, and dissatisfaction
with working conditions ( Edwards, & Burnard,2003, p.195). Furthermore, the authors of the
study identify common coping skills that can be used by nurses in controlling stress and burnout.
Some of the recognized strategies include social support, having stable relationships,
recognizing limitations, dealing with problems immediately they occur, peer support,

supervision, good home life with family and partner and interests outside of work ( Edwards, &
Burnard,2003, p.196).
The article support my research problem and question in a way that provides the reader
with common stress factors, which is vital in identifying the sources of negative trends and
sources for burnout and compassion fatigue. Also, the article compare and contrast strategies
discovered in previous research studies and focus on effective coping skills and interventions that
can contribute to the development of individual strategies in the reduction of stress, burnout and
compassion fatigue in the nursing profession.
