TheRNGmodelwasdevelopedusingReNormalisation
Group(RNG)methodsbyYakhotetaltorenormalisethe
NavierStokesequations,toaccountfortheeffectsofsmaller
scalesofmotion.Inthestandardkepsilonmodeltheeddy
viscosityisdeterminedfromasingleturbulencelengthscale,
sothecalculatedturbulentdiffusionisthatwhichoccursonly
atthespecifiedscale,whereasinrealityallscalesofmotion
willcontributetotheturbulentdiffusion.TheRNGapproach,
whichisamathematicaltechniquethatcanbeusedtoderive
aturbulencemodelsimilartothekepsilon,resultsina
modifiedformoftheepsilonequationwhichattemptsto
accountforthedifferentscalesofmotionthroughchangesto
theproductionterm.

AlthoughthetechniqueforderivingtheRNGequationswasquiterevolutionaryatthetime,it'susehasbeenmorelowkey.
Someworkersclaimitoffersimprovedaccuracyinrotatingflows,althoughtherearemixedresultsinthisregard:Ithasshown
improvedresultsformodellingrotatingcavities,butshownnoimprovementsoverthestandardmodelforpredictingvortex
evolution(boththeseexamplesfromindividualexperience).Itisfavouredforindoorairsimulations.
