FACT-SHEET CHECK_MK-INTERFACE(2/4)
Check_MK-Interface Overview
Check_MK is an expansion based on the existing Nagios monitoring system. The goal of Check_MK is
to conduct performance monitoring combined with the utmost optimized configuration management achievable by a high level automation range.
The interface between i-doit and Check_MK enables consolidating the configuration data and link
information between the CMDB and monitoring.
Manually managed, or automatically inventoried systems can be transferred from i-doit to Check_MK
and used as the technical basis for monitoring. In addition to basic information, such as an IPaddress/host name, other documentation data, such as locations, purpose, or prior host characteristics prioritization can be transferred to Check_MK as a host characteristic. This data is translated into
specific technical checks and dependencies; for example, if an object in CMDB is declared a test system only, the monitoring messaging system is deactivated. If CMDB Dsseldorf would be listed as the
object location, an automatic technical object dependency can be set in Check_MK by the Dsseldorf
VPN line.
In addition to providing the basic data for host queries the location structure documented in i-doit
can also be created in Check_MK. This allows an easy navigation through familiar structures or defining location- relevant regulations in Check_MK.
Real-time data concerning checks and the results can be read and displayed in Check_MK with the
Livestatus interface. This data may optionally be entered in the i-doit log book.
In addition, the information derived from Livestatus serves as an interface to connect information
from the real-time monitoring world with the logical service trees of the CMDB. The assignment of
monitoring-service checks to software or service assignments documented in the CMDB functions as
a transfer point. Reported monitoring interruptions can be analyzed based on the relevance of the
objects and determined as high priority for IT- or business services. For instance, if a MySQL-database
server is down, you can see at a glance that the CMR and the Intranet portal are affected as well.
