denly handed over a check

for one million dollars?
Eight random people find
themselves in this life-altering situation, with consequences that span from
hilarious to tragic to inspiring. This is the plot joining
together a sequence of stories from the 1932 classic
film, If I Had a Million,
the final installment of the
Money at the Movies
series this month at the
Estes Valley Library.
The film will be shown
on the big screen in the
Hondius Community Room
this Tuesday, March 24 at
3 p.m. Introducing the film,
financial consultant Marsha Yelick will offer attendees insights into the financial themes they might
watch for during the event.
In If I Had a Million,
the framing device involves
a dying millionaire (played
by Richard Bennett) who
leaves his fortune to
numerous complete strangers, with names chosen
randomly from the telephone directory. The various segments concern
what these lucky souls
decide to do with their
landfall and how their lives
are changed. W.C. Fields
plays a motorist who is
determined to get his
revenge against the road
hogs that ruin his leisurely

driving. In another segment, a timid clerk in a china shop leaves behind his
job, with some dramatic
results. Three Marines is
a segment starring Gary
Cooper as one in a trio of
servicemen who, disbelieving the check in their
hands, carelessly sign over
their dough to the cook at a
lunch stand.
Along the way, these
unexpected windfalls bring
joyor tragedyto the
recipients, until the movie
reunites with its eccentric
millionaire at the end.
If I Had a Million is a
90-minute black-and-white
feature and a rare cinema
classic from the post-silent
era.

Does luck figure

into good health?
W

here does
luck fall into
the equation of
health and
wellness? With St. Patricks
Day having just passed, it
got me thinking about how
luck plays into health and
fitness. We all know individuals who seem to be lucky all
the time. Im sure theres
someone in your life, they
are simply lucky at life. A
member was telling me the
other day, how he lives on
the opposite side of the
body weight issue. He can
hardly eat enough in order
to keep weight on him.
Right? How lucky is that? He
can eat anything and everything he wants and not put
on an ounce of weight. So
how does this work? Is there
luck? Is it about education?
Is it about money? Is it down
hard grit?
Heres an interesting fact,
higher levels of health are
directly correlated to higher
levels of education. Its also
true that higher levels of
health are also correlated to
higher levels of income. I
suppose if you think about
these statistics, there is
some truth here.
Most individuals, who
have higher levels of education understand and accept
the ins and outs of preventative health care and are often
more aware of medical problems when they occur.
These individuals are also
more apt to practice better
health habits.
Its the same with individuals who have higher levels of
income. These individuals
also utilize preventative
health screenings more regularly and because they are
financially more secure it

Visit to the
Wild Animal
Sanctuary

ell, Skeeterbug,
who now wants
to be called
Stephan, Catherine and I, drove to the Wild
Animal Sanctuary just outside
of Keenesburg, Co. last weekend.
I had a show to do there on
Saturday evening, so it was
business mixed with pleasure. I really dont like saying
it in that manner, as Im one
of the lucky ones whose business is actually a pleasure. If I
could make a living in any
manner, Im pretty sure what
Im doing is what I would
choose to do.
Anyway, we had to be
there, and wed heard about
the Wild Animal Sanctuary,
so Catherine and I thought it
would be a great thing for
Stephan to see. Well, his
Mom and about to be Dad
beat us to the punch. The
three of them had already
been there. That gave us a
ready made six-year-old tour
guide.
We spent quite a while near
the entrance watching some
tigers get acquainted. There
were two in particular that
didnt know if they would be
able to get along. I didnt say
anything to SkeeStephan,
when I noticed the two facing
off. I didnt have to. The one
facing away roared, Stephans
head came up and he looked
toward the noise. He asked if
the roar came through loudspeakers. Those cats dont
need sound support. We
could feel their roar through
the walkway we were on, thirty feet above them.
I was interested in the grizzly bears. Ive seen them in
the wild and been too close to
them a time or two. Since I
started writing about them in

Ride Easy
Pard

Victor T. Anderson

my thriller, Ghost Bear

Island, they have been a
favorite. The second book of
the trilogy is on its way to
completion and book three is
coming along as well.
There were two that wrestled and rolled and climbed
over one another, almost as if
they were clowning around,
just for us. Great fun to watch.
Of course we had to stop
for something to snack on.
Stephan got what we used to
call a popsicle. And it was
cold. He started to lick it and
his lip got stuck, like our
tongues did when we licked
cold metal as kids. He pulled
his lip out far enough that we
could pour water on it and his
lip finally came loose. The
only trouble we had was giggling while we tried to get
him free.
Its quite the place. Fascinating, wonderful, and yet,
after reading about the things
these animals have had to
endure before being rescued,
there is also sadness and
shame. It makes you wonder
just how stupid, how mean
and how unfeeling, some so
called humans can be.
We all need a sanctuary of
some sort. Mine is my music
and writing.
Its awfully nice that these
animals have their sanctuary
as well. The workers are volunteers and your ticket price
helps pay for the feed and
care. If you get a chance, take
a drive down there and have a
look at it. Its worth your time.

ESTES PARK INSIDE & OUT MARCH 20, 2015 15

Coyote class offered by Nature Conservancy

For the Trail-Gazette
s Rocky Mountain
National Parks
most common
predator, the coyotes distinctive howling,
barking, and yipping often
fills dark nights and early
mornings with the reassuring sounds of wilderness.
Once maligned and hunted
in the park, the coyote is
now cherished and celebrated for the unique adaptations that allow it to
thrive as human populations increase. But what
are those adaptations, and
what are the implications of
the coyotes own increasing population?
Join Rocky Mountain
Conservancy Field Institute on Saturday, March 28
for our Coyotes: Song
Dogs of the West class to
answer these questions,
study coyote habitat, and
learn how wolves could
affect the coyotes future.
