The Key Words : Information Gap Activities, Teaching Speaking
This research is intended to describe the procedures of information gap
activities and to identify to advanteges and disadvanteges of using information
gap activities for the fifth grade students of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Al-Fatah Dimong
Madiun in shooling year of 2010/2011.
The research method used in this research is qualitatif descriptif method.
The subject of the data are 18 students of the fifth grade students of Madrasah
Ibtidaiyah Al-Fatah Dimong Madiun. The data are collected through
observation, documentation and interview. The collected data are analized by
interactive analysis model through three steps, those are reduction, display and
verification.
The result of data analysis shows that first the procedures of information
gap activities are divided through 3 steps. Those are pre-activity,whilst-activity and
post activity.Second, the advantages of using information gap activities are : (1)
more communication takes place in information gap,(2) information gap activies
build students confidence,(3) information gap activities motivate the students,
and(4) information gap activities develop other sub skills.Mean while, the
disadvantages of using information gap activities are (1) the students with low
academic achievement do not participate,(2) there is lack of attention to
academically talented students,(3) some students dislike having group works,(4)
loners many find it hard to share answers (5) a number of students cause the
classroms crowded.
Based on the result above, the teacher is suggested to implement
information gap technique in pair work, group work and also task that is designed
to make them interact actively with other groups, while the students are suggested
to be active to participate in the teaching process by practicing the language more
often than before. It is hoped by using IGAP method in an interesting way, the
students particularly improve gradually especially in speaking ability which is
needed and useful for their future.
