To highlight the recent evidence for optimal protein intake and protein
supplementation in older adults, researchers from the Universitat Oldenburg, Germany
conducted a study on the effects on muscle protein synthesis, strength and overall
performance in this population. Supplementation
with leucine-rich, whey (fast) proteins, greater
than 0.8g/kg body weight, proved superior with
regard to muscle protein synthesis. Earlier studies
in frail older adults showed increased strength
after supplementation with milk protein,
whereas the combination with physical
exercise increased muscle mass without
additional beneft for strength or functionality.
Evidence from this study suggests positive
effects of protein supplementation on muscle
protein synthesis, muscle mass and muscle
