we can only do that by ensuring our suppliers are also doing their part to contribute to sustainable practices.
The report shows data collected every year since 2005 from approximately
170 Sun Chemical sites in more than 25
countries. The key sustainability metrics
measured in the data include: energy consumption/conservation at production and
non-production sites, the energy carbon
footprint at the production sites, process
waste reduction, water consumption, materials safety, and employee safety.
Providing a report that shows the ongoing management and monitoring of key
sustainability metrics is an important part
of Sun Chemicals sustainability policy.
All of Sun Chemicals sustainability reports, along with the Carbon
Footprint Report 2010, which outlines
the results from nine independent environmental analyses focused on quantifying the carbon footprint of its product
lines, are available to customers and can
be requested online at www.sunchemical.com/sustainability.
Customers in the U.S. can also calculate the initial carbon footprint for

Freedonia Group
Predicts U.S. Demand for
Fluoropolymers to Rise
5.3% to $2.4 billion in 2016
U.S. demand for fluoropolymers is forecast
to increase 5.3% annually to $2.4 billion
in 2016, with volume totaling 198 million
pounds. Advances will be spurred by an
improving economic outlook, which will
drive industrial output and boost construction activity. While market value gains will
only slightly outpace those of the 20062011 period, growth in volume terms is
projected to accelerate considerably. This is
because the challenging economic environment associated with the 2007-2009 recession held down market volume during the
2006-2011 period while strong increases
in pricing during the latter portion of the
period propped up value gains. Going forward, the situation is expected to reverse,
with growth in market value stemming
mainly from expanding volume demand,
rather than rising price levels. Gains in
market value will also benefit from trends
favoring higher performing fluoropolymer
resins as end-users seek better cost-benefit
ratios. These and other trends are presented

innovation that helps create a new market and value network, and eventually
goes on to disrupt an existing market
and value network (over a few years or
decades), displacing an earlier technology. The term is used in business and
technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not
expect, typically first by designing for
a different set of consumers in the new
market and later by lowering prices in
the existing market.
In contrast to disruptive innovation,
a sustaining innovation does not create new markets or value networks but
rather only evolves existing ones with
better value, allowing the firms within
to compete against each others sustaining improvements. Sustaining innovations may be either discontinuous (i.e.
transformational or revolutionary)
or continuous (i.e. evolutionary).
It has been our experience that when
projects fail it is usually characterized by
the absence of a volunteer champion.
Some companies sponsor idea champions by providing free time. 3M is an
example of this type management style.
Within large companies, idea champions go by various names and include,
but not limited to, advocate, change agent
or entrepreneur.
Within smaller companies an idea
champion could be the entrepreneur
owner, the founder, a consultant, the next
generation of family ownership, etc.
Ideas can be generated at anyplace
along the supply chain of a company,
both inside it as well as outside the
company proper. These ideas can be
captured and prioritized by members
along this supply chain. However, an
idea can only be championed effectively by someone within the organization itself. CW

on the state of the housing market, said Mark Wilgen, RustOleum brand manager. At the current time, homeowners are
staying in their homes longer and are investing more in the upkeep of their floors, decks, fences and siding. Well-maintained
wood surfaces add to the value of the home and saves money
in the long term.
Homeowners will spend more to ensure the products they
use to finish their wood surfaces will not only look good, but
will also last, Wilgen added. They dont want to invest time
and money on a product that will only hold up for one season.
They want a product that beautifies while also protecting the
surface for years to come. Consumer spending is growing as the
economy continues to recover. The professional market is soft,
but showing signs of stabilization.

Construction remains an important piece of the puzzle

the products performance and the underlying technology.
Keynote Speakers
The congress will commence with two keynote speakers.
Aditay Ranade of Lux Research, Inc., who will discuss ways
of assessing sustainability in the field of architectural coatings. According to Ranade, architectural coatings consume
significant amounts of energy, water and petrochemicals
during manufacture, and can negatively impact occupants
health and the environment by releasing harmful chemicals.
Sustainable coatings technologies reduce the impact of
paints and coatings on energy consumption, resource depletion, and the environment, but often get confused with greenwashed unsustainable alternatives. In this presentation,
Ranade will reveal a tool for assessing the true sustainability value of established and emerging coatings technologies,
and assess the sustainability value relative to the performance value to the end user.
Klemens Bartmann will discuss Sustainable and functional coatings challenges and opportunities in the
second keynote speech. According to Bartmann, coatings
