[Modern] Back to basics with Super Green (January 25, 2014)
I went back to the basic design I had for this deck. I put the playset of Wurmcoil Engine in the sideboard
(you will think its a waste, but anyways...)

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Against a casual deck, this deck can be a beast. Here is an example.

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Once I have soulbonded the Wolfir Silverheart, the highest power is EIGHT, and I have Nykthos to give
me tons of mana to play all these cards as soon as I draw them.

Here are two screen shots. It triggers 1 hits from Zhur Taa Druid without the need to tap any lands.

WBR Aurelia in RTR to BNG Standard (March 8, 2014)
This deck idea started as a simple Boros deck showcasing playsets of Legion's Initiative and Aurelia. Only
Aurelia is left, and after a string of embarrassing loses against all those Dimir decks, I decided to add
black.

14

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

15

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Turn 6, Howl of the Nightpack drops a bunch of tokens.

16

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Turn 10, I play a lone Exava that takes me all the way to the win. I end up with a second Exava in my
hand that I do not need to play. Pacisfiam helped a lot. At this point I have one in the battlefield.

17

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

More turns (here is turn 14), more creature attrition, but Exava stays through.

18

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Turn 17: Here is my second Pacifism, the play that turned the tide in my favor.

19

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Turn 20: Once Exava is enchanted with Ethereal Armor, it is a 7/7 and I can grind all of my opponent's
fatties.

20

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Turn 25: Dreadbore helps with removal of said green fatties.

21

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Turn 29, For the Win (FTW).

22

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

AVR Casual Modern: Descendant's Path Take 2, now Simic Humans +
Wolfir Silverheart (March 16, 2014)
Title says it all. I took a hint from the artwork and exchanged the wolves for humans, but the deck
needed some punch. I added Wolfir Silverheart, which I cannot auto-cast unless I have another one on
the board, but can hard-cast later in the game For The Win (FTW). Ghostly Flicker is awesome: I can
bring back an Omenspeaker for Scry 2 and an additional land from Borderland Ranger.

23

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here is the deck. I have been playing it a lot today, and it is a ton of fun.

24

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

25

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here are three screenshots from fun games. First one is when I overwhelm with all the creatures I got to
free cast or to cast with Prophet of Kruphix.

26

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here are double soul-bonded Wingcrafter and Wolfir Silverheart.

27

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

And here I beat an opponent with a 28/28 critter because I can chump block turn after turn with my
free-casted humans.

31

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Modern Zombies Casual: Philactery Lich build-around (March 17, 2014)
It is a very fickle deck because if you only have one artifact on the board and it gets destroyed or exiled,
so do any Philactery Lich on the board. It is still a fun deck.

[Modern] Mono Black Titan (April 28, 2014)
This deck is a lot of fun. Grave Titan is the expected finisher, but Essence Scatter has won me a game or
two. I am running a play set of Nykthos (not shown).

Here is Essence Scatter winning me a game.

[Standard] Devotion to White shell ahead of Nyx (May 9, 2014)
I looked at Enchantment Creatures, and white seems to have the most balanced selection.

Here is the deck, with a sample game I lost valiantly.

37

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

My opponent's deck was very well designed. Use Cyclonic Rift to pull creatures into your opponent's
hand, then exiled them from everywhere using Reap Intellect.

[Modern] Devotion to Green in Tournament Practice (May 12, 2014)
I don't know how bad this deck will perform in Tournament Practice. I will be happy winning 50 percent
of the time with it. It costs considerably less to build than the established decks, even though I do not
ever see it becoming established.

43

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Game 1: Won, against a Pyromancer Blue-Red deck.

Game 2: Lost, against a Cryptic Command, Snapcaster Mage, Esper Charm, White Sun's Zenith deck.

47

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Game 3: auto-lose against Tarmogoyf Naya Zoo, Wild Nacatl, Kird Ape, LIghtning Bolt, Lightning Helix,
Path to Exile.....a very quick death 0-2 match! And that is why the Goyf is the most expensive creature in
Modern!

48

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Game 4: Won 2-1 against a Sakura Tribe Elder, Valakut deck. I lost the first game badly, but I used all of
my land destruction from the side board to win the next two games.

49

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Game 5: Won 2-1 against a Batterskull, Liliana of the Veil, Damnation, Thoutghtseize, Inquisition of
Kozilek deck. The third game was a 20 turn marathon. I find myself switching in Bramblecrush too often;
it is time to main-deck it.

50

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

I went 3-2 with the first configuration, which is not bad.
In the new configuration I have 3 Bramblecrush main-decked, and this was just what I needed when I
faced a Tron deck in game 6. I won a very decisive 2-0 against this deck.
In game one my opponent was able to triple his Urza lands to drop a Wurmcoil Engine, but Acidic Slime
killed it with deathtouch.

51

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

My opponent played some counter spells, but I have many creatures in my deck. I was able early on to
soulbond a Wolfir Silverheart to activate drawing 8 cards with Garruk.

52

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here a Cyclonic Rift sends all of my non-land permanents back to my hand, but Nykthos allows me to
recover only losing one land that I did not need.

53

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here is the gg kamikaze with double soulbonded Wolfirs.

54

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Game 2 was even more decisive. My opponent may have realized that I had enough land destruction to
win against Tron, and it sure looks like I do judging by this one match. Of course, I need to play this deck
many times against Tron. I could have just gotten lucky during this match.

As of May 12
Configuration 1: 3-2
Configuration 2: 1-0

[Modern] Devotion to White with Mesa Enchantress and Mentor of the
Meek (June 1, 2014)
This is a really fun deck. Once it gets going you can draw tons of cards. Not shown: play set of Nykthos.

56

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here is a game I just played. I gained a ton of life and had oodles of mana to play the cards I drew, and
because I kept drawing enchantments and weenies, I could draw more!

57

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here is a better configuration. There are too many powerful artifacts and enchantments in Modern. I am
also considering main-decking some Path to Exiles.

Epic game against a Power Nine deck Part 1 (June 26, 2014)
I will give you the punch line: I lost, of course, but I lost to an incredible deck. There are so many classic
plays in this game that I took the time to make a gigantic load of screen shots from which I need to
learn. My opponent was gracious and willing to play the game out just to teach me a little and I am very
thankful. Tabasco is a class act. Thanks, Tabasco!
Here is the part of the game when I think I can win. When your opponent is playing Crucible of Worlds,
run for your life.

There is already a Mox on the board. Here is another Power Nine: Time Walk.

This deck is living proof that any deck with two 2 copies of Jace the Mind Sculptor (JTMS), only
really need to be able to play JTMS with proper cover, no matter what those cards are. I like

[Standard] Blue Artifacts Post-rotation Prep (August 24, 2014)
This deck only has cards from the four non-rotating sets (THS+M15). It is a permanent loser, of
course, because even in "Just for fun" people play their 77 planeswalkers tournament deck, or
they play with all of the current sets in Standard (I do that, too, of course!).

I came across this deck while researching Mirage block in the MTG Salvation Wiki. Here is the
information from a page kept by Wizards on it, the cards laid out, and the planned substitutions.
Vampiric Tutor is the major miss because it is banned in Legacy. Also, I had to use a cheap tutor

[Legacy] Baby Steps with Pros Bloom (August 29, 2014)
A lot has changed since this deck was a dominant Standard deck.... there are so many ways to
lose with it in the current adaptation, and I just don't know how to pull the combo off correctly.
In the first step to master the deck I was at least able to boost Drain Life by exiling my hand
except for it to Cadaverous Bloom.

My opponent has three Armadillo Cloak on a Crypt Rat.

229

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

I was able to exile enough cards for an X=7 activation of Drain Life.

230

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Now I need to figure out how to maximize Prosperity and I still don't know what I am supposed
to do with Squandered Resources... time to do some more research.
August 30 update: I annoyed the living daylights out of players in Just for Fun trying to learn to
how to use this deck, and I got stuck with Natural Balance.... I simply do not understand what I
am supposed to do. I will pause on this experiment until I find enough people willing to play
against me with this deck. Upside: I finally know how to insert comments online.

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

[Legacy] Blue Black JTMS Fun Deck vs Casual 12-Post (August 30, 2014)
I don't stand a chance against the money a.k.a. tournament version of this deck. Casual and
tournament versions use Glimmerpost and Cloudpost as lands of type Locus, hence the name. In
the casual version the other four posts to make twelve come from Thespian's Stage becoming a
post.
The tournament version has Primeval Titan, Emrakul the Aeons Torn, Ulamog the Infinite Gyre,
Kozilek Butcher of Truth. The version in this game transcript uses Colossus of Akros from
Theros, a much more budget-friendly (read, cheaper) option.
The tournament version has a bunch of other cards that would break my budget: Sensei's
Divining Top, Candelabra of Tawnos, Show and Tell Misty Rainforest, Tropical Island, Vesuva,
The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Force of Will (in the sideboard as a playset, which is like
having your other car be a Rolls Royce), Leyline of Sanctity.
Starting off my opponent is not limited by hand size with Reliquary Tower.

[Modern] Back to Elves (September 1, 2014)
I consider doing a Naya Elves build, but mono-green Elves is so much better. I learned a lot from
playing the Elves Duel Deck: 1-of's and 2-of's can be really good in a deck, don't over-do lords. I
already knew that having more than one win condition is a good thing, and this deck has them: a
bunch of little creatures lorded, or drop a gigantic game-ending fatty, or combo with a Wolfir, or
draw a ton of cards with Garruk, Primal Hunter.

299

This is the best win because my opponent was playing some tournament-quality cards
(Snapcaster Mage, Path to Exile, fetchlands).

Out of 28 games I won 19 and lost 9. In 2 or 3 of the loses my opponent stalled and I conceded,
and in 2 or 3 of my wins the opposite happened. Therefore, a more accurate count is 17 wins and
7 losses. I am playing in Just for Fun, of course, and in no way is this deck a competitive deck. If
I went into tournament practice I would most likely lose every game!

(September 7, 2104)
Here is a game where my opponent could not remove enough of my elves and I was able to have

My opponent was able to gain a ton of life with Sangromancer.
"Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, you may gain 3 life.
Whenever an opponent discards a card, you may gain 3 life."
He/she had two of these and they are flyers. This was my opponent's only way to exact damage
against my legion of elves.

Vintage rocks! Now that I have several awesome cards, I can make an Esper (White, Blue,
Black) deck with them. Believe or not, this is still a casual deck, even though it has some
superstars. A true tournament deck in Vintage has Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, and a play set
of Force of Will, and I am not going that way, period. Also, reanimator is not a winning strategy
in Vintage for as long as Gifts Ungiven is a restricted card.

[Legacy] Red Devotion Goblin Deck (September 20, 2014)
Very fast decks, and mono-red, or RDW (Red Deck Wins), annoy many players. I played this
deck just enough to optimize it, but no more, since I am not a fan of playing very quick RDW
games, either by playing RDW, or by playing against RDW. I could optimize this deck a lot
more, but I don't want to alienate the three people who play Legacy Just for Fun. (Just kidding,
but not really kidding, after 50 or so games, you begin to recognize usernames with such a small
pool of players.) The deck is too fast for a four drop artifact....

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

361

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

362

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

Here is a game against an Ensnaring Bridge-Isochron Scepter deck. If you can't destroy both of
these artifacts, you can't win, especially when the card that Isochron Scepter is playing is
Lightning Bolt, and the critter on the board is the Izzet guildmage from Ravnica: City of Guilds,
and the guildmage copies Lightning Bolt: a sick combo.

363

Magic The Gathering Adventures Blog Posts Volume 3

And then there are the matchups where by turn 5 I am ready to deploy an invincible army of
Goblins. Those games are not that much fun, and I shy away from playing RDW for that reason.
Also, RDW tends to be a linear strategy and gets boring really quickly.
