Ananchorboltisusedtoattachobjectsorstructurestoconcrete.
Therearemanytypesofanchorbolts,consistingofdesignsthatare
mostlyproprietarytothemanufacturingcompanies.Allconsistofa
threadedend,towhichanutandwashercanbeattachedforthe
externalload.[1]Anchorboltsareextensivelyusedonalltypesof
projects,fromstandardbuildingstodamsandnuclearpower
plants.[2]Theycanalsobeusedtofirmlyaffixembedplatestoa
concretefoundationwhenusedwithastructuralsteelelement.[3]
Thesimplestanchorboltisacastinplaceanchor.Asseeninthe
Acastinplaceanchorbolt
figure,mostdesignsconsistofastandardboltwithahexagonal
head,whichiscastinthewetconcretebeforeitsets.Thereareother
designs,someconsistingofabentboltwithahookontheend,orsomeothersortofbending.Castinplace
anchorboltsarethestrongesttypeoffastener,butthecastingisdifficult,andtheyareusuallyonlyusedfor
heavymachinesmountedonpouredconcretefloors.Anotheruseofthisanchorboltistoconnectthe
concretefoundationofabuildingtoitswall.Withthis,thebuildingismoreresistanttoearthquakes.
Currentlythereareseveraldevicestoassistinholdingandinplacinganchorbolttosetintheconcrete.
Thesedevicesmostlymadefromcompositeplastic.Oncetheconcretehasbeenpouredandset,theonly
othertypesofboltsthatcanbeusedaremechanicalandepoxybolts.Epoxyboltsarethestrongest,butcan
beverytrickytoinstall,sincetheepoxyhastobemixedtoexactspecifications,theholemustbevery
clean,andthesettimehastobewatched.Aswell,theremustbearigoroustestingprogram.InBoston'sBig
Digproject,theseprocedureswerenotwellcarriedout,whichresultedinalargeconcreteslabcrushinga
motorist.
Aconcretescrewisanotherwayofattachingthingstoconcretethathasalreadybeenpouredandset.

Wedgeanchors,alsoknownasredheadbolts,expansionboltsandexpansionanchors,securethemselves
usingamechanicalwedgingeffectattheendofthefastener.Therearethreebasicstylesofwedgeanchors:
fullythreaded,partialthreadedandthefullbodiedwedgeanchor.[4]
Asshowninthefigure,tighteningtheboltresultsinawedgebeing
drivenupagainstasleeve.Thisjamstheendofthebolt,and
providesthestrength.Manydifferentmanufacturersprovidea
variationonthistheme,usuallydependingontheconditionofthe
concrete,andthetypeofload.Ifamechanicalanchorfails,itis
usuallyintheformofpullingoutawedgeofconcrete,andforthis
reason,properdesignlooksatthedepthofembedmentandensures
thattheboltsarenotspacedtooclosely.
Aspecializedformoftheanchorboltistherockbolt,usedinrock
excavations.Inmanypartsoftheworldseismicanchorsareanother
specializedsubject.[5]
