Coventry City Council selects Civica to modernise its legal department

Five-year partnership to further improve administration and processes as part of the

councils 12.5% savings goal
25th March 2014, London: Civica, a market leader in specialist systems and business
process services that helps organisations transform the way they work, has commenced a
five-year partnership with Coventry City Council to deliver a more joined-up way of working
and improve court administration efficiency.
As part of a wider review to deliver 12.5% savings across the council in the next few years,
working with Civica the council identified a number of opportunities to streamline services in
its legal department. By using Civicas Legal Case Management system, Coventry City
Council will improve court administration systems and processes, and deliver effective
workforce management through an integrated and more efficient way of working.
Coventry needed a modern IT system in order to streamline the processing of case work and
to avoid wasting time and paper, particularly for printing long reports for individual cases for
example. With Civicas case management system, data will be held in one central place,
meaning that staff can log in to the system from any location to process a legal bundle. This
increased accessibility and streamlined processes has ensured effective workforce
management and work-flows. The council expects to make financial savings through a
reduction in printouts, reduced maintenance and license costs and more efficient ways of
working. It will also help the council meet its environmental targets.
Steve Horsley, legal services manager, Coventry City Council comments: Whilst austerity
cuts continue, it was important that we selected an IT system that delivered multiple benefits
to our legal department. From a tactical point of view, well be able to significantly reduce the
time it takes to file reports; which will improve workloads helping us to focus our efforts
elsewhere. But well also become more strategic in the way we operate, which encompasses
supporting a more agile and flexible way of working. Also, by setting up this central
repository, we should be able to identify key trends to help improve the management of
cases and better plan for the future.
Lorraine Smith, Managing Director for Legal, Civica said: Were at an important crossroads
in local government. There is a real demand to transform how services are delivered.
Coventry City Council is a great example of an organisation on a mission to provide a joinedup way of working. By thinking about how all departments, including the legal department,
can play their part and become more effective through technology innovation, councils will
be firmly on the road to achieving their goals and cutting costs.
Civicas proven range of software and services offers a low-risk and scalable platform,
designed to support the way legal teams work. Civica currently works with 150 legal teams
across the UK, ranging from local authorities to regional private practices. Civica has a
strong partnership with Coventry City Council and it recently announced plans to provide IT
support for the councils revenues and benefits service.
