LETTER FROM THE TE
magazine
We feel like weve been talking about the weather a lot here at Natures Pathways. It
is a big deal to survive winter and make it to spring, not only because it feels nice
physically but there are also a variety of emotional benefits to milder temperatures.
However, April holds much more than peeks of sunshine and the promise of
summer:

things about autism every day, theres still so much to know. The aim of this
nationally-recognized month since 1970 is to educate the public about autism.
Were grateful several contributors to Natures Pathways help do this every
month be sure to check out what they have to say.
NATIONAL GARDEN MONTH This one isnt so surprising. The old adage,
April showers bring May flowers is true, and helps to make Garden Month very
relevant here in Wisconsin. Whether its a full-size backyard garden or herbs and
spices on your windowsill, try your hand at having a green thumb this month.

NATIONAL PET DAY: APRIL 11 Its no secret this magazine loves pets! Whether
youre a cat or dog person, fish or reptile fan, or parakeet enthusiast, the benefits of
having an animal in your life are immense and range from lowering your chance of
depression and heart attack to simply increasing your ability to calm down and relax.
INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY: APRIL 29 Recognized since 1982, this day,
also known as World Dance Day, promotes the importance of dance. Although it
originally began to persuade the idea that dance is a significant form of education,
we think its also a fun way to express yourself, exercise and let loose.
Whether you choose to continue to celebrate one of the above, enjoy it for the
first time, or have your own April traditions to keep alive, we hope you are able
to delight in each new experience.

Why do I still
have thyroid
symptoms
when my
lab work is
normal?
......................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP
re you suffering from symptoms of low thyroid (hypothyroidism) but your medical provider has told you that your
TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test was normal and
thus your thyroid is working fine?
We help hundreds of women each month with multiple
hormone problems, including those seeking a diagnosis and treatment for symptoms of low thyroid. One of the most frustrating
things that happens for many of my patients is that they truly do
have hypothyroidism but their TSH result is somewhere in the
broad range of normal, so they are told that their thyroid is not
the cause of their problems.
Many of my patients report hypothyroid symptoms such as:
I feel cold all the time especially my hands and feet and
sometimes I wear socks or extra clothing to bed. (This is not
normal!)
I am gaining weight for no reason or cannot lose a pound no
matter how hard I try. (It is very difficult to lose weight if the
cells in your body do not have proper thyroid signals.)
I am always tired, sluggish or lethargic.
I am sleeping more than usual.
I am constipated and may not have a bowel movement for
several days. (For best health you should have at least one
bowel movement daily before 10 a.m. and perhaps a second one
later in the day.)
10
The thyroid controls many functions in the body and there are a
multitude of symptoms that can signal a thyroid problem. Every
single cell in your body has a receptor for thyroid hormone, so if
your cells are not getting enough thyroid hormone stimulation
you will certainly not feel well.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the base of
the neck that controls metabolism and many of the bodys systems
from brain to bowel to libido and fertility. The American Thyroid
Association reports that 1 in 8 women will develop a thyroid disorder during her lifetime. Low thyroid is an inherited condition that
can also cause fertility problems, miscarriages, premature births and
severe developmental problems in children. Undiagnosed low thyroid
can also lead to heart disease, insulin resistance, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, dementia and twice the chance of Alzheimers disease.
We help our patients determine if they have a thyroid problem by
interpreting their symptoms, physical exam findings and lab results
including TSH, free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4),
reverse triiodothyronine (RT3), thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin (TG) antibodies, vitamin D and ferritin levels. We utilize a
wonderfully helpful thyroid/adrenal/sleep screening questionnaire
and machine called the Thyroflex that gives us very objective data
of thyroid function at the cellular level. A Thyroflex test is a fiveminute, Food and Drug Administration-approved test that measures
the speed in milliseconds of a reflex in the arm. During an
in-office evaluation, a small hammer connected to a computer is
used to strike the brachioradialis tendon located near the elbow.
The computer measures the rate and caliber of the reflex response to

Before filling your prescription, the pharmacy wants to let you know how much it
will cost. If you have insurance, the pharmacy contacts them to determine what
your copay will be. Sometimes this requires
extra paperwork from your doctor, called
a prior authorization, in which case the
pharmacy sends the appropriate paperwork to your doctor. Sometimes there may
be promotions available for the medication
you are taking that can lower your cost.
Other times there may be certain criteria
that qualify you for coverage of medications
and services.
This all may take some time to do, but we
want you to get the medications you need at
prices you can afford.

Research
The reason your doctors are able to determine what treatment is best for you is by
their knowledge acquired through studies
and trials. Pharmacists also are integrated
into this process, as they monitor the drugs
being studied. The pharmacist may also be
the one who posed the question for the study
or compiled other studies together to determine what the combined information says.
More knowledge helps make better decisions
when choosing what therapy is right for you.

Our story of awareness

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind

April is National Autism Awareness Month but our awareness
is year-round. As mothers of exceptional children, we live in the
trenches of the ups and downs of childhood behaviors.
Enjoy another excerpt from my friend and colleague who has
been courageous in her advocacy for her son. We are all on this
earth for a reason and we all have different ways of doing things.
Like my aunt Betty always told me, Thats why there is chocolate
and vanilla. No one person is alike and this is what makes the
world spectacular. Please enjoy.
Commentary by Meridith N. Starling, CISW, MSSW
en years ago our first child, Gavin, was born 12 weeks early
and it was truly a miracle that he survived. The next three
years of his life involved monitors, feeding pumps, multiple medications and over 13 various surgeries. It took him quite
a bit longer to reach simple milestones of sitting up, crawling and
walking. Given the extreme circumstances this is not that unusual,
is it? Until he did not talk. An occasional babble, but no words.
Could this be autism?
What is autism?
At age 4 he had an MRI of his head that showed parts of his brain
did not develop correctly. At an appointment with a neurologist, the
doctor quite matter of factly, with no apparent idea that he would
be delivering one of the biggest heart-crushing, hope-destroying
blows that I have experienced since my son was born, said that
there is nothing that can be done, that nothing will fix this. Gavin
will have extreme cognitive and speech limitations for his entire life.
I sat in the exam room, looking at this man with tears welling up
in my eyes, feeling like I was just punched in the gut. Then, he left

with your arms extended above your head. Your mind and body
must be connected and focused on maintaining your balance or
youll tip over. Learning to listen to your body and center your
attention allows runners and cyclists to block out distractions
and nervousness before a race. It also provides the concentration
required to keep you going through the intense times in training
and competitions.
When adding yoga to your training schedule, the intensity of
your training should dictate the intensity of your yoga practice. If
youre a competitive athlete who logs a lot of miles, a more relaxed
yoga class like Restorative Yoga will be good for an active recovery
day. If your training is less intense or if you utilize cross-training
days, go for a more intense yoga class like Yoga Body Bootcamp or
PiYo. Dont be afraid to try different classes until you find the one
thats right for you. And, when the season ends, your yoga practice doesnt have to. Use yoga year-round to build and maintain
strength, flexibility and mental focus.

Recovering
wholeness
through tagteam trauma
healing
Part II
...............................................................
By Victoria L. Huss
n the first part of this story, Caroline* consulted with a Certified Rolfer for assistance with addressing chronic pain. The
Rolfer determined that Caroline would be a great candidate
to receive Rolfing Structural Integration (or Rolfing SI). However,
Caroline needed guidance with developing healthier emotional
coping skills and in forming a stronger internal sense of security
so she was given the contact information of a skilled trauma therapist. The Rolfer envisioned that with time, Caroline could have
a clearer sense of boundaries of where she ended and another
person began so that she could rediscover her center. (The Rolfers work of balancing the body to find the bodys healthiest center
of gravity combined with the emotional work of finding centeredness and grounding is an especially potent combination.)
The Rolfer did not always hear back from clients who were
referred out to other professionals like this and was pleasantly
surprised when Caroline strutted back into her office a year later.
There was a definitive shift in Carolines energy and disposition
this time around. She seemed more confident, more knowing.
Her physical issues and pain already were eased somewhat. She
inhabited her body a bit more but she still needed help feeling
more at home in her body. Carolines hard work with her therapist created some space and resiliency for the potential of change
to occur. Because of this new adaptability, the Rolfer had no
30
The months passed and the Rolfing SI sessions continued. Caroline realized that for years, she actually spent very little time being
in her body. Feeling greater security within, she remembered
that she could consciously inhabit more and more of her body.
The sessions heightened her awareness of how she held herself.
She began to notice how her shoulders and chest tightened when
she was around negative people.
Becoming more in touch with her bodys subtle ways of communicating gave Caroline more of a sense of control over her environment. After much listening to her body, Caroline concluded
that she really did need a different job that better suited her intelligence and physical needs. She also began to slowly remove the
difficult people in her life who tended to take more than give.
The combination of Rolfing SI and trauma therapy helped
empower Caroline to become more conscious thus allowing
her to make healthier choices for herself, instead of reacting all
the time. Restoring her center was a multidimensional approach
creating lasting change. Carolines efforts rewarded her with
wonderful new possibilities for moving, being and living.

A surprising journey
When you toss your empty soup can into your
recycling bin, your part in the recycling story may
have come to an end but your soup can is only
beginning its adventure.
First, the contents of your recycling bin are
picked up by a hauling truck. Its a noisy, but
short ride to the Tri-County Recycling Facility,
where your soup can and its fellow recyclables
are weighed and then dumped into a large room
called the tip floor.
Next, the soup can travels along a conveyor belt.
Recycling has a
local impact
All of the materials we collect
here get sold to a third party for
further recycling, explains Mark

balance the skin tone
and moisturize. Using
these herbs as a facial wash is a great way
to restore balance to your skin after it has
been subjected to our Wisconsin winters.
Lastly, a good deep cleansing is in order
this time of year. Rhassoul clay has the
ability to pull dirt from deep out of the
pores without stripping your skin of its
natural oils. Using a mask like Rhassoul
clay leaves the facial canvas brighter, less
dull and dewier. A deep cleansing mask
like this should be used once a week.
Gently helping your skin transition from
winter to spring will encourage it to readjust itself naturally. This helps to promote
balance, leading to an even complexion
and a healthy glow we all crave.

Become an
effective
communicator
Prevent confusion, hurt feelings
and more with these tips
...........................................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC

mass. They have over the years shortened the description of this
labor of love to pushing people down.
This bring-a-smile-to-your-face story does demonstrate a
very important principle of communication: Our actions, body
language or even words all play significant parts in communicating effectively with others. In this story, my parents words
certainly did not convey the message they intended. Not being
aware that there is often an under the radar or read between
the lines message in communication can create problems with
misunderstandings, confusion, hurt feelings and even significant
conflicts in relationships.
Here is an example of a more common message mix-up: The
dishes are always left out on the counter. I have asked you to put
them in the dishwasher so I dont have to deal with them when I
get home from work. Given the chance to explore, the connection is made that the dishes on the counter is not the real issue
www.naturespathways.com
Minimizing can be as subtle as not making eye contact to something more significant, such as responding to someone with a
statement like, Why do you think this is such a big deal? Or,
Really I dont have time.
By definition, arguing is an exchange or expression of diverging
or opposite views, typically in a heated or angry way. Clearly this
type of response will hinder effective communication. Arguing
can also sound like this: If you wouldnt leave your clothes on
the floor, I wouldnt have to get mad and the evening wouldnt be
ruined. In this case, arguing can be described as tit for tat or the
effort to cite evidence in support of your idea, action or theory.
Problem-solving can seem like trying to genuinely be helpful but
often it will disconnect the lines of communication. People often
will note I didnt ask them to fix it; I just wanted them to listen.
Whereas MAPing is not the answer, SAVing is the more effective approach to communication. Ultimately, each of us has a
need to be seen, heard and valued. Meeting this need is the way to
enriching communication. Seeing the other person when you are
approached includes making eye contact and even shifting your
physical orientation toward the person in other words, turning
and looking at the person. Attending to the person is another
name for listening. This response can include acknowledging
with a nod or expressing having heard what is said by paraphrasing or restating. Valuing is sending the message that the person
matters to you, and that what is being said is important because
you care about them. Valuing does not mean you are in agreement; it means you are willing to honor and respect the persons
thoughts and feelings.
Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC, is the director of CCM

your life when you dont have a choice. What theyre doing for me
is really neat. You never realize how expensive things are until you
have an accident. It doesnt take long for the bills to mount.
Today Bruce is happy that he still has a job at Appvion. He
recounted how someone from work sat down with him and his
wife and helped them with the reams of insurance paperwork.
But what really impressed him was the way the company treated
him. They kept my job for me when I was off for four months,
he said, and thats rare. From day one they kept in touch to see
how I was doing. Everything theyve done has been good. The
union passed the hat to help me out too. And when I got back,
even people I didnt know asked how I was doing and told me it
was good to see me back. The whole attitude at that place is just
phenomenal.

feel alone or cut off as they pursue answers and try to find resources.
According to Dr. Janet Lintala, functional medicine practitioner,
author, speaker and mother of an autistic child, the best approach to
working with individuals with autism is a team approach.
First and foremost, the parents must lead a team of professionals who are highly skilled in their respective disciplines. One team
member needs to be a doctor familiar with the health problems
often associated with autism. The Autism Research Institute, states
that some of the health problems often associated with autism are
gastrointestinal problems, nutritional and metabolic deficiencies,
toxic metal burden, and immune dysfunction.
Although individuals with autism and their families face many
unique challenges, it has been our experience that they are incredibly resilient, resourceful and creative.

Healthy in spirit:
Changing your
life, thought by
thought
........................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese
f your life is less than fulfilling, take note: You can change your
life thought by thought! No matter what the situation might
be, your attitude about it can make all the difference in the
world. You can choose how you want to be in the face of anything,
from life-threatening illness to the smallest of daily annoyances.
Yes, you can actually choose which thoughts to keep and which
to release. When thoughts come into your mind, you can ask yourself if you choose to believe them and carry them with you, or if you
want to release them and let them float away like balloons, rising
higher and higher into the sky until they completely disappear.
You can ask yourself, What will my day be like if I choose to
hold onto this thought? What will it be like to focus on it, to dwell
on it, to let it fill my day, to tell all my coworkers about it? How will
I feel at the end of the day?
If your answers to such questions point to a day of fear, depression, anxiety or resentment, you can ask yourself, What would
I rather emphasize today? Negative emotions can seem overwhelming at times, but when we realize that our emotions come
from what we think, we can begin to change what we think and
bring our emotions into better balance.
When Captain Sully Sullivan landed that airliner on the
Hudson River in 2009, he was able to contain his emotions and
focus on what he needed to do to save the passengers and crew.
The rescuers who came out to the plane commented on how calm
and orderly most of the people were. Captain Sullivan managed
his own emotions and had a very positive influence on the passengers and crew.
You may not be an airline pilot, but you have probably encountered difficult situations, such as an illness, a problem on the job
or a family conflict. The thoughts that you hold onto in those situations are extremely important.

cid produced by bacteria in the mouth is the cause of cavities. Bacteria in your mouth is the plaque that you brush
off your teeth and the tartar that your dental hygienist
removes from your teeth at your regular cleanings.
The pH scale goes from 1 to 14, with 1 being the most acidic, 14
being the most alkaline and 7 being neutral (like most water). A pH
of 5.5 is an important pH level for teeth, as the teeth begin to dissolve
or demineralize/break down at a pH in the mouth below 5.5.
Food and drink change the pH of saliva. Age may be a factor
also, as children have an average saliva pH of 7.5, while adults tend
to be more acidic, with a saliva pH of 6.5 or lower. There are some
products too that have low pH levels, such as Listerine (from 3.4 to
3.5 pH) and Crest (3.6 pH), but Biotene has a pH of 6.2.
An acidic mouth contains chronic excess acid in the oral cavity
resulting from frequent consumption of sugary foods or drinks
high in acid content. Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, can
also cause an increase in acid in the mouth and elevate cavity rate.
Also, some fungi found on the roots of teeth can increase crib
caries (cavities) in children.
To test the pH in your mouth you can use any pH strips that
are used to test acidic items. Wait at least two hours after eating or
drinking to ensure that the food consumed does not alter the test
results. Cleanse your mouth by filling your mouth with saliva and
then swallowing or spitting. Fill the mouth again with saliva and
place a small amount on the pH strip. The strip will change colors
based on the results.
At Dr. Twohigs dental office, we have a tooth cleaning powder that contains
baking soda, xylitol, minerals and also a mint flavor that will help raise the pH
in your mouth to a healthy level. So in your everyday brushing with the new
powder you can keep you pH at a healthy, safe level for your teeth. We will be
the first office in the north central United States to offer this tooth powder. We
have trial size bottles for under $4 or a large bottle that could last up to a year for
under $17. If you have questions please contact our office at info@drtwohig.com,
twohighygiene@gmail.com or 920-867-3101.
Linda Schuelke, RDH, has been working for Dr. William Twohig D.D.S., for three

this position offers and truly enjoys working in the holistic-focused dental practice.

If Captain Sullivan had focused on fear, disaster and the potential death of more than a hundred people, he probably would not
have been able to land safely. Negative thinking can be toxic to
you and those around you. You know this if you have ever spent
time around someone who is always negative. It can be a very
oppressive experience, and you might feel like running for the
nearest exit even on an airplane! Do you run the other way
when Negative Norm walks down the corridor at work? Have
you heard all you can tolerate from Hypochondriac Helen and
the latest illness that everyone is getting its going around, you
know! You dont have to get sucked into such conversations.
Now, consider your own thinking and your topics of conversation. Are you raising yourself and others up, or are you bringing
yourself and everybody around you down?
Of course, we all need friends who can listen to us when we are
having a problem, but we dont need to tell everybody everything.
In fact, we can limit our negative conversation and our negative
thinking by redirecting ourselves. All it takes is awareness, willingness and persistence. Give it a try!

Dry
needling 101
Your questions answered
.............................................................
By Connie Strey
ave you been thinking about trying dry needling but want
some questions answered before you schedule an appointment? Maybe you arent quite sure what dry needling is,
are confused about how it differs from acupuncture or you are
simply afraid that it will be painful. Not to worry, we are here to
give you the facts about the dry needling process.
Dry needling is a therapeutic technique in which a trained physical therapist inserts small, sterile filament needles into the skin
and muscle directly at a trigger point. This generates a twitch
response, helping release muscle tension and pain. The goal is to
release or inactivate the trigger points and relieve pain.
Dry needling and acupuncture, while they use the same needle
types, are two very different treatments. Dry needling is a therapeutic technique where a trained physical therapist inserts small,
sterile, solid filament needles into the skin and muscle directly at
a trigger point. The ultimate goal is to generate a twitch response
which helps release the tension and pain located in the muscles.
On the other hand, acupuncture involves the insertion of these
thin needles through the skin at strategic points of the body. It is
a key component of traditional Chinese medicine that is believed
to adjust and alter the bodys energy flow into healthier patterns.
Pioneering studies by Dr. Jay Shah and his colleagues at the National
50
The needle used in the procedure is very thin and most patients
do not feel the insertion of the needle. The local twitch response
elicits a very brief (less than a second) painful response. Some
patients describe this as a little electrical shock or a cramping
sensation. This twitch response is a positive and desirable reaction.
Patients may report feeling sore following the procedure. The soreness is described as muscle soreness over the area treated and into the
areas of referred symptoms. Typically, the soreness lasts a few hours.

Companys mission makes
funeral preplanning
an easy decision
.............................................................
One thing that immediately put my mind at ease is the fact that
when you preplan your funeral, those plans arent written in stone.
Because I dont believe Im in a permanent phase of my life, I dont
know exactly where Ill end up or who may be in my life when I
pass. I was nervous about choosing a funeral home, cemetery and
even a casket. Both Jonas and my funeral director assured me that
if I change my mind about something, its perfectly natural and an
easy change. As long as my wishes are written down, my family
and friends will know whats truly important to me when it comes
to my end-of-life plans.
I realized during this process how important it is to me to help
my loved ones as much as I can when I pass away, and preplanning my funeral was the perfect step to show them how much I
care about them even after Im gone.
