BMCT 3143 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

ASSIGNMENT 1
SEMESTER 2 SESSION 2014/2015
This is a group assignment. The assignment consists of parts A and B. Form a group with a
maximum member of five (5) people and produce a report on the description given. Submit
PART A before 20/3/15 and submit PART B before 3/4/15.
PART A
1) Thermal conductivity, k, is a heat transfer coefficient that represents the ability of a certain
material to conduct heat.
i) What is the SI unit for k?
ii) Is W/m/K the same as W/m/C? Explain.
iii) Do some research about experimental ways for finding thermal conductivity, k, of a
material. You may refer to journal articles or any engineering handbooks to collect
necessary information. Select one method from the many you found in your reading
and briefly describe the method. Use schematic diagram to illustrate your proposed
method. Please cite your reference.
2) What about the SI unit for heat transfer coefficient h used in convection? Do you think
W/m2/K the same as W/m2/C?
3) What do you understand by the term absolute zero? Will a cold object with a temperature
of 0C radiate heat? Explain.
Summarize your findings in a report with a maximum of six (6) pages. The first page serves
as a cover page. There should be a minimum of two (2) pages of contents. Figures/Tables
should not exceed a page. The font should be in 12 pt with a 1.5 spacing between paragraphs.
Marks will be given based on the scientific contents that show the ability of students to
understand the problems discussed. Report your findings using your own words. Zero mark
will be given if plagiarism is detected. This is a GROUP ASSIGNMENT. Submit your
findings for PART A no later than 20/3/15. Please submit your report to your respective
lecturer.

PART B
Consider steady two-dimensional heat transfer in a long solid body whose cross section is
given in Figure 1. The temperatures at the selected nodes and thermal conditions on the
boundaries are as shown. The thermal conductivity of the body is k.
1. Define new values of temperature at the boundaries. The values should be different
from the values shown in the figure. Values chosen must not be similar from one
group to another. Equations with function such as sine or cosine may also be used at
the boundaries.
2. Define x and y for your solution.
3. Determine the temperatures at the indicated points in the medium. Choose a numerical
method you find suitable to solve the case. State the method and show the calculation
involved.
