Increase in people
adopting code. Boards and senior mgt disconnect in reinforcing the
codes. Huge reputational damage. Bringing the code in to play bring
the day to day
SIMON WEBLEY, research director, institute of business ethics
Everybody in the org is responsible, terrifically true
How can we strengthen the ethical culture
BRIAN WALSH, deputy chair, IESBA
1. adopting code processes
2. Sensitivity of boards in ethical behavior, survey: exposure of
ethics within processes and process didnt seem to be translated
in to an increase in decision making being influenced by its good
behavior
Moer need for rgulations?
Regulations is on the audit practice, more definitive the role is clearer
and you can regulate. If you take order and market regulators, interest
is in getting independent auditors who will act as a check on the
behavior of the corporate mgt and stuff I think that codes are
propbably the right way to go bcos the global and onus is on the
member bodies to enforce but I do think in the area, ive always been
an operational finance guy. The code does need to be upgraded in the
lights ofevents. Behavior of accountants in business and to reinforce
the requirements from accountants and business in terms of up their
behavior and the reaction to the pressures that they come under
JEFF Kaye, chief executive, willow foundation
Disagree, regulation to an extent is critical: wright wing corruption,
environmental health and safety. ECONOMIC PRESSURES. Regulation
should be globalize because we dont have the same everytime
MARGARET FOWLER, asst manager, transport advisory team, kpmg
You have stakeholders outside of the organization. Mgt acctg users is
internal because it is usually confidential its difficult to regulate those
among global organization. They should set standards with their
internal mgt accounting and reporting should be own more by the org
and board. And abiding by the ethical code
NINA BARAKZAI, EMEA privacy & ethics counsel, dell corp ltd.

It gives people contextual identity when you write the code on when
where and when they could apply the principles. Its great to think abt
the boards and those tone at the top issues but at the end of the day if
youre a professional you have a fear of influence that you could
affect .and you have to reach your own professional completion not
just by waking up and talking to the CEO hey what do you think?
Those codes if youre using it as a framework. In the context of ethics, if
youre using it as a framework, you will try to your pro capacity to apply
it to your org, to your sphere of influence and that support mechanism
that the code will give you wont give you the onses but it will give u
some kind of guiding structure, and its upon your own discretion on
how you apply it. Cross border application is diverse so everybodys got
a code great fabulous but if you look at them theyre probably very
similar but how they are applied is where you start getting distinctions
and where you start getting indication of pressure and how they bump
up against there cause
PROFESSOR COLIN FISHER, professor, mgt of ethics and values,
Nottingham trent university
There have been an example where an American company is trying to
introduce its code of ethics and values and to say a Scandinavian
country.
Scandinavian country: Look at the car, its very American and the
language doesnt fit at all and thought they dont even want to
translate into our local language because that might distort the legal
meaning of the code. Sign up to the code
NINA: accountancy language have to use globally is consistent because
of the standards. There is normalizing. No cultural disconnect.
Accounting code design for ethics.
BRIAN: Area thats been missing, enforcement. There consequenxes,
not too obvious. More transparent enfroecement of the code. Ansence
of ethical behavior. Esxposure as an individual
:::::FORSTMANN Codes of conduct, do this and that. Principles which
youll behave.
Act ethically but they put that to owners. Clarity on theconsequences.
Clear structure, we manage and report. People are more likely to
approach others and discuss ethics how it has been treated.
NINA. In practice, a lot of communications of ethics, they know their
accountability but theyre not sure how to do it. Icing, they need
support to help them do it. Youve got codes but not a lot are doing.

Theyre trying to desperately implement it but theyre struggling. Theyre

not sure how to do it.
DISCRETION. If you toned your framework from top down bottom up.
Most want to do the right thing, if theyve faced something they know
theres a question. Set of principles. CLARIFY THE STRUCTURE IN
WHICH YOULL OPERTAE
Jeff: Variations insuch markets. Tough. Effort to influence the country
there working and culture. Difficult is it our job to influence culture.
Ethical culture in the way they trying to do business. Dominant
position. Apple is in china. Ethical position, diff ethical base if apple
operates in us. Hasnt influence chinese company
CODE OF PRINCIPLES AND RULES. Cultures have wrights and wrong.
The culture has a big part to play just how rules or codes are
responded to or applied. Anglo-saxon approach. Proper standards and
norms, geopgraphy and culture.
