piness possible of humanity. We understand democracy as the highest political c
onstruction of Western history and capable of asse rting world, but we also see
as an obstacle to the construction of the critical Marxist mother insis ts depr
eciate the most diverse democratic experien ces under the label of "bourgeo
is democracy&q uot;. We recognize that in times past this characterizat ion has
been appropriate and useful. However, we will argue that such criticism become
s , in the context of modern democratic construction , unsustainable.
Como compreender as origens gregas da democracia? Qual o significado dessa palav
ra e qual o seu alcance atual? O alcance da lei e da promoo do indivduo no horizont
e ateniense favoreceu uma circunstncia na qual o indivduo aquilata por si mesmo a
postura condizente com a regra e se pe a si mesmo no propsito de servir. Fortalece
r o indivduo para fortalecer a soberania, enaltecer a virtude para alcanar a perfe
io moral, servir a Polis servindo ao melhor de si mesmo, consagrar ao mximo o traba
lho para com os prprios mritos a fim de servir maximamente aos concidados, eis o pr
onturio do estratgico poder poltico grego. Compreender o tesouro de um Estado consa
grado por leis compreender a prpria histria no seu direcionamento democrtico e evol
utivo. A democracia a melhor poltica? Julgamos que sim. Objetivamos, pois, discer
nir a natureza profunda da democracia para fundamentar sua defesa no s como a melh
or forma de governo, mas como a melhor via de construo poltica para o futuro, visan
do justia, paz, ao bem-estar e felicidade possvel da humanidade. Entendemos a demo
cracia como a mxima construo poltica da histria do Ocidente e capaz de se afirmar mun
dialmente, mas constatamos tambm como obstculo para essa construo a crtica de matriz
marxista que insiste em depreciar as mais variadas experincias democrticas sob o rt
ulo de democracia burguesa. Admitimos que em pocas passadas esta caracterizao tenha s
ido cabvel e til. Todavia, tentaremos demonstrar que tal crtica se torna, no contex
to da construo democrtica moderna, insustentvel.
