THE MASK
Objectives:

I.

To help students realize that each of us is created in the image and likeness
of God thus no one was created ugly.
To help students develop a new notion about beauty and thereby decrease
their tendency to give prime importance on external more than inner beauty.
To try to encourage the pupils to minimize or completely decrease their
tendency to ridicule people who they consider to be ugly and discover the
beauty that lies within each person.
Preparation Meeting

All the activities that the facilitators of grade four pupils are interesting. These are the
icebreakers, activities, and integration:
The grade 4- Courage facilitators icebreaker is called Crown the prince or princess.
It is about putting the crown on the drawing correctly but the pupils are blindfolded.
Their activity is called Mirror, Mirror which is about telling what is beautiful or pleasant
about their classmates. Their integration, which is called Crowns, is about making
crowns.
Grade 4- Congenialitys icebreaker is Human Bingo. But instead of putting their
names on the paper, the pupils are going to be tasked to put it in action. Their activity is
entitled Mask. The pupils are going to design a mask. Their integration is entitled
Complete the phrase. The pupils are going to complete certain phrases like I am loved
by God because
The icebreaker of the section Competence is entitled 20 peso bill. It aims to show
to the pupils that even if the twenty peso bill is crumpled, its value will never change just
like us, we may have some imperfections, but that will not define who we are and that
will not lessen our value. The activity is entitled Captivating beauty. The pupils are
going to design their mask according to how they think they look like and will ask their
classmates if they want to exchange their masks. For the integration part, they will
provide a bookmark with a prayer.
For the icebreaker, the section Confidence will show pictures of body parts and will
ask the pupils whether those are internal or external body parts. The activity is entitled
Bidding game. The pupils will be grouped and they will receive play money. The activity
is an auction wherein the pupils will have to bid for the pictures that they like, and some
pictures are not appealing. For the integration part, the pupils will make a sorry letter to
those whom they have hurt.

Grade 4- Cooperations icebreaker is entitled Whats in the box. The activity is

entitled What lies beneath wherein the pupils will have to color certain tiles to be able
to see the real picture printed in the paper. The integration is about writing a letter for
their future self.
Grade 4- Compassions icebreaker is also about crumpling a twenty peso bill. The
activity is decorating a mask. The pupils will decorate the right face of their mask
according to what they think others see them. On the other half of the mask, they will
decorate it according to how they see themselves. In their integration, the pupils are
going to be tasked to write a letter for themselves including the things that they find
beautiful about themselves.
The icebreaker of the Grade 4- Concern facilitators is about the story of Wanda who
is not that beautiful but was able to help a lot of people. The activity is entitled The
Mask which is also the same as Grade 4- Compassions activity. For the integration, the
facilitators will give the pupils stickers.
Grade four Courtesys icebreaker is entitled Beautiful Me which is a puzzle. Their
activity is about writing or drawing something on their paper plates. And for the
integration, the pupils will look at the drawing which has two faces. The other one is ugly.
Lastly, the grade four Creativity facilitators icebreaker is a survey whether who they
think is more beautiful or appealing. The facilitators will present pictures or drawings
which depict opposites like dark- skinned woman or fair- skinned woman. The activity is
about making a beauty product advertisement, and the integration is about making a
note to themselves, writing the things that appreciated about themselves.
We did not adapt the activities of the other facilitators. We stick to our activities and
combined them instead. After the preparation meeting, we distributed the areas which
we are going to facilitate.
II.

Pre- conference

The pre- conference was carried out outside the grade 4- Creativity room on March
24, 2015 at 5:10 in the afternoon. The Homeroom adviser suggested that we should be
able to note to the boys that the word beauty or beautiful is not only for the girls.
III.

Activity Process

I motivated the class by making my voice loud enough to be heard and by

encouraging them to look at what is beautiful and not on what is ugly. I encourage them
with conviction in my voice. I also encouraged them to listen carefully. The activity was
not modified.
The pupils this time are noisy and rowdy. We had some difficulties in managing them.
They are too excited for the activity. But despite their rowdiness, we saw that they
understood the lesson of the activity because they were able to give correct and
meaningful answers during the processing and insights. We understand that some of
them do not know yet the real meaning of what inner beauty is and how important it is
but it is good that at an early age, they were able to get some insights or ideas about it.
There is no significant behavior observed.
IV.

Evaluation/ recommendations

The objectives for this activity were achieved. The facilitators were able to explain
well that everyone is unique and that we all have imperfections but the good thing is that
there is always something that is beautiful in us. The facilitators also stressed the
importance of inner beauty and not just valuing the outer beauty. Therefore, they should
not laugh at others imperfections but look at what is inside of them instead.
The activity is very relevant for their needs because these days, children seemed to
be bold about laughing or looking at the flaws of others which could lead to bullying
distress to their unfortunate classmate.
The techniques used are also appropriate in presenting the activity as we were able
to easily engage the pupils in the activity. Not only that they seemed interested in joining
the activity, they also seemed happy while doing it.
As a student counselor, I should improve my communication skills in public. Most of
the time, I am not able to say everything that I want to say. I easily get nervous and
because of that, I talk fast. Because of this, the things that I say have no impact to the
listeners and since there were some important concepts that have not been explained, it
affects as to how I should relate one topic to another. As to my strength, it is probably my
desire for a change. I could feel that I am beginning to open up more on my pupils and
listening to them more intently unlike before that I was striving hard to break the barrier
between us.
Since the activity was effective and since it has achieved its objectives, it should be
given again. In order to improve the activity, it is recommended to make the instructions
more clear.
V.

Personal Learning Experiences

I was also bullied in elementary and since then, I began complaining at how cruel
people are. I realized that I was not able to get over it. I became sensitive to bad people.
But while researching about bullying and while listening to the sharings of those who
have also experienced bullying and how they manage to get over it, I realized that I have
been living my life wrong. I dwelled in my past. And for the many years that I have been
dwelling there, the feelings were never forgotten. And every time I see people or
situations similar to it, doubt, anger, and pessimism arises again. I realized that I cannot
accept those kinds of people and being treated unjustly. But that should not be the case.
I should accept the reality and move on. Through acceptance and optimism, this cycle
will perhaps end.
VI.

Post- conference

The post- conference was held inside the grade 4- Creativity room on January 12,
2015 at 9 A.M. The Homeroom Adviser praised the facilitators for their good work. She
said that the facilitators have improved a lot and that their voice was louder. She
acknowledged the facilitators for complying with her suggestions and she was grateful
because they did their best. The Homeroom Adviser looked happy and satisfied after the
facilitation.
