PROGRAM OUTCOMES/ STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the program students are expected to:
I: Synthesize theoretical and empirical knowledge from the humanities, and the physical,
biological and behavioral sciences with nursing theory and practice.
II: Apply the nursing process to promote adaptation along the wellness-illness continuum
for multiple client systems throughout the life cycle in a variety of settings.
III: Assume various roles of the professional nurse to meet health needs of client systems
in a multi-variant and changing society.
IV: Collaborate with other health team members to promote optimal health of various
client systems.
V: Utilize appropriate communication techniques with multiple client systems in a variety
of settings.

VI: Demonstrate professional accountability, incorporating legal and ethical aspects in


nursing practice.

LEVEL OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this course students are expected to:
I. Synthesize concepts and theories from the humanities, physical, biological and
behavioral sciences to the adaptation of the nursing process with client systems in defined
health care systems.
II. Apply the nursing process in promoting adaptation for the individual, family and
groups in the pediatric/womens health setting.
III. Demonstrate the professional nurse role components of caregiver, teacher, change
agent and advocate to meet health care needs of multi-variant client systems.
IV. Collaborate with other health team members to promote wellness of individuals
within family and group client systems.
V. Utilize communication techniques with multiple client systems and health care team
members.
VI. Apply legal and ethical accountability when providing care of clients from wellness
to high- risk illness in womens health and pediatric settings.
VII. Demonstrate the ability to manage the care of the individuals within families and
groups in womens health and pediatric settings.

VIII. Apply nursing research findings to nursing practice with clients in the womens
health and pediatric setting.
IX. Analyze the relationship of life-long learning to the present and future practice of
nursing.
X. Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching/learning and the resultant change/within a
defined health care system.
XI. Analyze the appropriate need for technology in the design of workflow in nursing
care
XII. Participate as a client advocate in health care delivery related to social and public
policy.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon the completion of this course students are expected to:
1. Compile previously presented concepts from humanities, physical, biological,
and behavioral sciences with nursing theory to clients in womens healthcare
and pediatric settings.
2. Apply the nursing process in the management of care for clients in the
womens health care and pediatric settings.
3. Provide safe care, educate, advocate, and serve as a change agent for the
individual within families and groups to meet healthcare needs of women and
children within a multi-variant society.
4. Collaborate with the appropriate health team members to promote safe
optimal health of individuals within families and groups in womens health
and pediatric settings.
5. Consistently apply communication techniques within individuals, families,
and groups to promote professional collaboration, client teaching, and
information gathering.
6. Apply legal and ethical accountability in womens health and pediatric
situations.
7. Apply specialized leadership and management skills when caring for clients
with womens health and pediatric problems.
8. Examine selected research findings for various nursing interventions within
the womens health and pediatric settings.

9. Assume accountability for personal and professional growth that is congruent


with current nursing practice.
10. Appraise the teaching/learning process in promoting optimal health among the
womens health and pediatric population.
11. Evaluate technological devices used to guide workflow in the womens health
and pediatric settings.
12. Interpret social and public policies that influence client care in the womens
health and pediatric settings.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This group interaction seminar will assist students to expand their
communication skills and teaching/learning skills. The class topics will
center on maternal-child health care issues including ethical and legal
issues. Each student is expected to function in the role of the teacher,
researcher, leader, and evaluator. Content will be introduced through
small group activities. The seminar groups will be expected to
stimulate the entire class to participate. The entire class will be
responsible for reviewing the seminar topics by completing specific
reading assignments. Also, Service learning is a teaching and learning
strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction
and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic
responsibility, and strengthen communities. Service learning is a
requirement of the university and this class.

POINTERS FOR SEMINAR PRESENTATION


A power point presentation of 12 slides will be presented. The first
slide will be the Title slide, and the last slide will be the references,
listed in APA format. Students may bring the presentation to class on a
zip drive for presentation and use the projector in the classroom, but a
printed copy must be provided for all instructors. Students are
expected to present the material, not just read from the power point.
The power point is merely a guide for the presentation.

Must have formal presentation of topic.


Use a dictionary to determine the correct pronunciation of
terms before presentation.
Make frequent eye contact with people in the classroom
Suitable, professional attire
Students are responsible for arranging for any additional
audiovisual support materials not available in the classroom.
DO NOT put any tape, tacks, etc, on the classroom
blackboards
Use of handouts in encouraged
For any audiovisuals used, be sure they are readable from a
distance. Also, be sure you explain any poster (s) used during
your presentation
Each member should share equal responsibility for in-class
presentations. Each group will receive one grade for the
entire group. Individual grades will not be given. If a group
member does not participate in scheduled group meetings
and does not actively participate in the preparation of the
seminar, they may be dismissed from the group (only after
discussion and approval from faculty member). The dismissed
member will then become responsible for developing and
presenting an individual seminar.
Topics are to be provided at the beginning of the course for
student selection.

CRITERIA FOR GRADING OF FORMAL PAPER
Neatness must be typed! When typing, do not use easy
erase paper. Make corrections clearly and neatly.
Grammar/Punctuation correct spelling, verb tenses are
consistent, subjects and verbs agree in terms of singular and
plural, proper formation of paragraphs, written in the THIRD
PERSON.
Style/Format Margin 1 in all around the paper. Use the latest
edition APA format for paper (5th edition). Paper must be
typed, double-spaced, body of 3-5 pages, with a title page
and reference page.
Do not use Courier font. (Font must be Times New Roman with
12pt font)
Referencing referencing of quoted or paraphrased material
must be included in paper. TO OMIT IN-TEXT CITATIONS IS
PLAGIARISM. Each paragraph is to be referenced.
A Reference List must be included at the end of the
paper.******
a. At least five (5) references the more the better
b. No older than five (5) years unless limited sources
make it necessary to use older references. A very
good classic source may be necessary. (Check with a
faculty member)
c. At least three (3) journals must be used may be nursing,
medical, or other professional journals, NOT magazine. Lay
sources may only be used as additional references.
d. If you encounter difficulty-obtaining references, SEEK HELP
FROM FACULTY.
e. Remember there are libraries at Tech, University of LA at
Monroe, and LSUMC-Shreveport and the Grambling library
is available online.
Content/Organization
The paper is set up in a logical order. Information is pertinent,
accurate, and up-to-date. The subject must be adequately

covered. NURSING IMPLICATIONS MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE


PAPER.
