AUCS 340: Ethics in the Professions

Analysis of Business OR Medical Ethics Article from Textbook

For this assignment you will need to use ONE of your textbooks either Taking Sides: Clashing
Views in Business Ethics and Society twelfth edition or Taking sides: Clashing Views in
Health and Society eleventh edition. On examining each text, you will find that there are six
main parts divided into multiple topics/issues under each part with multiple topics under each
section.
For this assignment, you will select one issue to examine and prepare a written report. You must
submit your topic and await approval by the instructor before you complete the remainder
of the assignment as only one student can present a topic. Once your topic is approved, you
will review the selected issue and summarize the Yes and No, or pro vs. con, arguments
contained in your essay. Next you will need to update the material from your issue by finding at
least one current media report on this topic. For example one business ethics topic is: Is CEO
Compensation Justified by Performance?. If you selected this topic you would summarize the
arguments presented for each side in the essay from the textbook and then find at least one
current media article that discusses more current work in that area. Currently, there is much
debate over this topic related to the financial demise of companies and the continued bonus
payments to CEOs making the news and you could use that information to update your essay.
Finally, you will need to select a side of this issue and summarize the ethical reasons why you
would be on that side of this ethical article.
Grading:
1) Approval of topic by instructor = 10% of grade
Topics must be approved by Tuesday April 14th at noon; as topics are selected they
will be posted on blackboard so you will know that those topics/issues have been
approved for other students. Please submit more than one topic/issue so that you
will have a greater probability of your topic being approved early.
2) Summary of Yes and No arguments for selected issue = 20% of grade
3) Development of current media coverage of this topic = 20% of grade
4) Development of your ethical side of this issue = 20% of grade
5) Thoroughness of discussion, sentence structure, grammar, spelling = 20% of grade
6) Appropriate use of reference citations = 10% of grade
Steps two through six constitute the individual written potion of this assignment and
must be completed by Saturday April 18th by noon.
It is expected that the length of your written paper will be three to four pages, double spaced,
using 12 font and standard page margins.
