DEBORAHS THREE-FINGER TYPING

TUTOR
For people with manual dexterity issues

HINTS:
Practice for 10-20 minutes every day.
Try to use the same fingers for the same keys
every time. Learn a pattern.

***BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Maximize the


window so you can see all of the instructions
and sample letters.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Put your fingers as directed for each exercise.
Look at the keys and try to memorize where
they are. You only have to learn a few keys in
each lesson.

Under the instructions for each lesson, there is

a row of sample letters and a row below that


says "start". Click after "start" and look if a
blinking line appears there. You need a
blinking cursor before you can type. Try to
type the sample letters as shown

Use backspace to erase mistakes (On a Mac,


thats the Delete key).

To quit or to start over, just close the window.


When it asks if you want to save, say No.

1. Lesson One: THE CENTER OF YOUR


KEYBOARD
Put both thumbs on the long space bar at the
bottom of the main key set. Put your first
fingers on F and J. Your left index finger
will be on F and your right index finger will
be on J. These are the home keys. The F
and J keys have little bumps on them so you
can find them more easily.
When you are ready, click in the white space

after the word "start" and try to type exactly


what is shown. Use either thumb to make the
spaces.

2. Lesson Two: UPPER ROW: ADD R and


U
Put your first fingers on the F and J keys
and practice moving from F up to R and from J
up to U using only your first finger. That is all
you will do in this lesson!

spaces after each 4 letters.

and practice moving from F down to V and
from J down to N still using only your first
fingers. In each lesson you only need to learn
a few keys!

and practice moving from F over to G and from
J over to H. Now were up to 8 keys!

5. SECOND (MIDDLE) FINGERS: ADD E


and I
Put your first fingers on the F and J keys
and practice moving your middle fingers up to
the E and I keys. Now we can make real
words!

and K

Put your first fingers on the F and J keys


and press the D and K keys with your
second (middle) fingers. Your hands are
already there!

after the word "start" and try to type exactly
what is shown. Use either thumb to make the
spaces after each 4 letters.

8. LOWER ROW ADD M AND B.


Put your first fingers on the F and J keys
and practice moving from F down to V and
from J down to N. Now we have all the central
keys!
When you are ready, click in the white space
after the word "start" and try to type exactly
what is shown. Use either thumb to make the

spaces after each set of letters.

9.CAPITAL LETTERS
To make a capital F, press the Shift Key with
your right middle finger and then tap the F
with your left. To make a capital J, press the
Shift Key with your left middle finger while you
tap the J key with your right. Try to use the
opposite Shift Key so one hand shifts while
the other types the letter. Practice pressing
each shift key with your right, then left, then
right, then left. Remember to move back to
the home keys after each shift key.

When you are ready, put your hands in home


position. With your first fingers on F and J.
Click in the space after "Start" to begin.

10. FAR LEFT LETTERS ADD A and S


When you go to the far right and far left in 3
finger typing, you need to move your whole
hand over to the far right or far left.

Before we start this lesson, move your first


finger from the F to S to F to S. Move your
second/middle finger from D to A to D to A.
Move the two fingers from FD to SA to FD to
SA. Thats the motion youre going to practice.

However, once youve moved over, you will


reach back with your first finger. Try it: with

your second/middle finger on the A key,


touch SDandF with your first finger.

Start the lesson with your fingers on F and


J, the home keys and normal start position
for each lesson.

11. FAR RIGHT LETTERS ADD P, O,


and L
When you go to the far right in 3 finger typing,
you need to move your whole hand over to the
far right.

Before we start this lesson, move your

second/middle finger from K to P to K.

With your middle finger on the P key, you will


type O and L with your first finger. Try it:
with your second/middle finger on the P key,
touch OLOL with your first finger. In this
position, you can even reach to the K and I
with your first finger. Try that. With your
second/middle finger on the P key, touch
OLKIO. Start in home position and then slide
up to the P key.
