The IED670s (Intelligent Electronic Devices) are a
successor of previous generations of IEDs from ABB.
They have inherited the proven algorithms, which have
been further developed to provide state-of-the art
performance.
The IED670 fully meets the high requirements of the
IEC 61850 standard in every respect. The IED670
IEDs are capable of performing the extensive
communication tasks, for instance GOOSE messaging
over horizontal communication, in addition to all
protection and control functions.

Extensive function library and modular hardware

The IED670s are based on a common hardware, base
software and application function library. It allows
integration of more functionality in one device than ever
before, for instance protection and control or protection
of several objects.

The extensive I/O capability on analog and binary I/O allows implementation of the most
advanced applications. Utilization of common hardware and software components simplifies
setting, commissioning and maintenance. You gain significant timesavings since you only need to
learn one product to know them all.
They feature extensive logic capabilities that can be used, for instance, to perform load transfer,
automatic disconnector opening and closing of CB rings. Thus, with the IED670s you can manage
any application in your high voltage power system.
User-friendly and ready-to use IEDs
The ready-to-use IED670 packages are designed based on the ABBs long experience in
protection, control and monitoring to achieve optimum operation of the power system.
The packages are delivered pre-configured and with default settings for line distance, line
differential, transformer protection and bay control applications. You only need to change the
setting of parameters to correspond to the characteristics of your power network to ensure
optimized operation.
The local HMI of IED670 gives a quick, yet detailed, overview of the process with setting and
control capabilities in any situation. It shows the switchgear arrangement graphically, status
information and measurements. Using the keypad you can operate the breaker and disconnectors
and the result of the operation is instantly shown on the display.

The PCM600 software tool automatically

detects disturbance information and
generates report files. The fast TCP/IP
communication enables dozens of
disturbance files to be uploaded from the IEDs to the PCM600 in few seconds. After the
upload, PCM600 can automatically generate an e-mail or SMS message and distribute the
reports to defined recipients. The automatic reporting allows the relay engineer to concentrate
on the disturbance analysis instead of data manipulation. This way he will have more time for
analysis of difficult fault cases that require special attention.
You can easily modify the layout of the report to meet the needs of the subscribers. You can
also define the style and content of the report, i.e. what should be reported of the available
recorded information. The disturbance file is stored in the IEDs according to the COMTRADE
de-facto standard, which allows you to view the disturbance file with ABB software or any
commercially available software tool you prefer.
Future-proof design
IED670 is designed for IEC61850 and provides a complete range of modular applications. The
international IEC 61850 standard allows for interoperable systems and flexible architectures in
substation automation. ABB has actively participated in the definition and development of IEC
61850 from the beginning and has taken a leading role in the elaboration of this standard.
The IED670s interoperate with any IEC 61850 compliant IEDs, tools and systems. Equipped with
full IEC 61850 capabilities they add value to your investment throughout the life cycle of your
installation
The IED670s are designed to communicate with any substation automation system: In addition to
61850-8 communication they support SPA, LON and IEC 60870-5-103.
