1. describe the general characteristics of a roundworm; and
2. trace the stages of the life cycle of Ascaris lumbricoides that are harmful to
human.

Learning Tasks
Teachers Activity

A. Preparation
Good morning class!

Students Activity
Good morning maam Sein!

I would like to request somebody to stand in the

front and lead the prayer.
Good morning once again section Bonifacio!
How are you today?
Good!

Good morning maam Sein!

We are fine maam.

Before anything else, let us first check your

attendance, class.
Yesterday, I left you an assignment to do. Right?
Pass your assignment now class.

Yes maam!

B. Review
Last meeting, we discussed about Sea Sponges.
What have you learned about sea sponges?
Any volunteer?
What else, class?

Sponges are classified under phylum Porifera,

which means pores bearer.
They get nutrients by filter feeding. It is a method

Very good!

in which an organism feeds by filtering small

particles of food from water that pass by or
through some part of the organism.

Do you have any questions about Phylum

Porifera, class?
C. Motivation

None maam.

What organism is this, class?

Let us say that this rabbit became unhealthy and
eventually died because of its fatal condition.
After a couple of days, what do you think will
happen to the rabbits dead body if it remains in
that position?
Now, you will know what will happen to the rabbit
by watching this video clip that I am going to
show you.
(Show them a short clip of the decomposition of a
rabbits dead body.)

A rabbit maam.

(various answers are raised by the students)

What have you observed with the video, class?

What else, class?

The dead body of the rabbit was slowly rotting.

Correct! What do you think is the cause of the

decay of the body of the rabbit, class?

The dead body of the rabbit eventually gone.

Very good! Aside from worms, there are also

microorganisms like bacteria and fungi that are
decomposers.

The cause of the decay of the rabbits dead body

are the worms, maam.

By watching the video earlier, do you have any

idea about our topic for today, class?
Very good!

Roundworms maam.

Do you know what roundworm is, class?

Yes maam.
How about its characteristics?

Since, most of you have not yet known the

characteristics of roundworms. Let us have an
activity so will know by yourselves the
characteristics of a roundworm.

(Most of them answered no.)

C. Activity
By doing this activity, you are expected to
describe the general characteristics of a
roundworm and trace the stages of the life cycle
of Ascaris lumbricoides that are harmful to
human.
I want you to group yourselves into four, please
count off from one to four.
In this activity, you are provided with an activity
sheet individually, you are going to read the
Guide notes attached to your activity sheet. Also,
a manila paper is provided per group, you have
to write there your answer as a group.
(distribute the activity sheet, guide notes and
manila paper)

1,2,3,4

I will give you five minutes to read the guide

notes and at the same time to write your answers
in the activity sheet.

(Students are doing their activity.)

Read carefully the guide notes and fill the

diagram in your answer sheet.
Choose a representative in your group to present
your output. I will give 2 minutes to present your
output in front.
The diagram you will come up with will be the key
in understanding the characteristic of a
roundworm.
You can now start the activity.
D. Abstraction

Roundworms are under the phylum Nematoda.

Roundworms have two types the free-living and
parasitic.
Free-living roundworms are the harmless
roundworms that are beneficial in the
decomposition of organic matter and the
recycling of nutrients in the soil.

Now that you are done with the activity I would

like to ask some volunteers to raise important
ideas from the activity that you just did. Anyone?

What do you think is the meaning of free-living,

class?

What examples of free-living roundworms do you

know, class?

Vinegar eels are one of the examples free-living

roundworms.
Parasitic roundworms are the roundworms that
live in the body of their host. They get nutrients
from their host and cause disease to their host.
The examples of parasitic roundworms are
ascaris, hookworms, trichinella and filarial
worms.
(A student reads the description from the guide
notes.)

How about parasitic class? What does parasitic

roundworm means? Anyone?

Very good! Based on your guide notes, what are

the examples of parasitic roundworms?
They are slender, unsegmented and tapered at
both ends.
Can you describe each of them?
In order for you to know how these parasitic
worms enter their host, let us see how an ascaris
worm enters a human body.
(show them a diagram showing how ascaris eggs
enter a human body)
How about the shape or form of roundworms,
class?
Very good! They usually eat microscopic
organisms like, what, class? Anyone?

They eat microorganisms like fungi and bacteria.

They also eat organic matter from dead plants
and animals.

The Pseudocoelom provides the turgorhydrostatic pressure for the animal as a whole,
functions as a lubricant between tissues, and
provides a medium for intercellular signaling and
nutrient transport.

Roundworms do have a body cavity known as

pseudocoelom and a digestive tract. Now, by
looking at this picture what do you think is the
function of pseuodocoelom?
Free-living roundworms, maam, are beneficial
because they provide nutrients to our soil and
break down organic materials. Also, roundworms
feed on small animals that are considered crops
pests thus they control the damage to crops.

E. Application
A person should have a proper hygiene in order

What do you think is the contribution of

roundworms in our ecosystem, class? Any
volunteer?

to be not infected of these roundworms.

Washing hands, maam.

Since, roundworms are not just free-living, class,
there are also parasitic ones. What do you think
are the ways to prevent these parasitic worms
from entering our body?

Taking a bath every day.

Keep foods in sealed containers.
None, maam.

Very good! We should be very careful especially

with what we eat because our food might be
carrying the eggs of these parasitic worms thus,
we should observe proper hygiene. What are
your ways in observing proper hygiene, class?
What else, class?
Very good!
Do you have any questions class?
So, let us have a quiz. Get sheet of paper.
Write your name and the date today.

IV. Evaluation
Prepare sheet of paper, class and answer the following questions.

3. The nematode Ascaris lumbricoides infects humans, spending most of its adult life
