»» The average price for apps on BlackBerry App World is more than three times higher than apps on Apple’s App Store
and Google’s Android Market.

»» On the Apple App Store, apps priced at $0.99 are still most popular, however, most revenue is generated by apps priced
around $50.

The price distribution for the Most Popular and Most Grossing ranking lists are given
above. The $0.99 price point is very popular (50 apps were priced at this pricepoint),
and since the launch of the Apple App Store, prices have been skewing to this
pricepoint because of the higher probability of getting in the most popular listings,
which increases downloads. However, from the Most Grossing price distribution we
can conclude that pricing lower will not always result in more revenue: apps on this
list are generally priced much higher, with prices going up to $190, and most apps
being priced between $4.99 and $9.99 (44). Hence, in general, more revenue is
being generated by the more expensive apps, in spite of these apps probably being
downloaded less often than cheaper apps.
To give more insight in the price distribution of the Most Popular ranking list on Apple’s
App Store, rankings were plotted against the average price of apps that have had
these rankings this month. We can see that prices increase with ranking, hence apps
are more likely to achieve a lower -better- ranking when pricing lower. As we can see
above, the most popular were apps priced at between $0.99 and $3.99.

The average category prices of the most popular listings for Apple, BlackBerry and
Google are shown above. BlackBerry App World apps are clearly most expensive:
in general, they are priced more than three times higher than apps on Apple’s App
Store and Google’s Android Market. Apps on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android
Market are priced similarly, with only the categories Navigation & Travel, Productivity
and Social Networking showing significant differences.
Please note that the minimum application price on BlackBerry App World is $2.99.
To give more insight in the price distribution of the Most Grossing ranking list on
Apple’s App Store, rankings were plotted against the average price of apps that have
had these rankings this month. Unlike with rankings and prices on the Most Popular
list, prices decrease with ranking on the Most Grossing list.
Where the most popular apps are priced between $0.99 and $3.99 (as can be seen on
the left), most revenue was generated by apps priced at around $50.
