Overview

Once bound by the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance (commonly known as the
Warsaw Pact) the diverse cultures and rich architectural histories of Eastern Europe were nearly
inaccessible to all but native travelers after WWII. The last 20 years have been a period of significant
transformation in the region and the current moment presents an opportunity to examine how the
people of Eastern Europe have built, rebuilt, preserved, and adapted their cities through two decades
of growth and throughout their history.

Traveling rapidly through many languages, borders, economies and cultures, we will survey the
present state of the above 13 Eastern European cities. These cities have extensive and characteristic
architectural heritages, as well as long histories of economic and cultural exchange among each other.
We will travel well-trodden routes with an eye for the current traces of those exchanges, inviting
awareness of comparative experience and place.

In these historic urban fabrics we will visit recent works of architecture, and seek out architects
currently practicing to learn what challenges and sustains them in this new era.
