The Components of Curriculum for Students Taking Up Bachelor of Secondary

Education Major in Mathematics

General Education
Table 1 lists the courses under General Education Component of Curriculum
for students taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics
(NSTP and PE included). The General Education Curriculum has eleven main
categories of the subjects that sum up to 77 units (100%). As presented on the table,
the component Social Sciences ranked first having a total of 12 units. The total of 12
units corresponds to 16 percent of the total number of units under General Education
Subjects. The subjects that make up Social Sciences component include General
Psychology with Drug Abuse and Prevention, Society and Culture with Family
Planning,

General Economics, Agrarian Reform and Taxation, Politics and

Governance with the New Constitution; each corresponds to 3 units. The

components English and Filipino have the same ranking; each has a total of 9 units
that corresponds to 11 percent of the total number of units. Physical Education
component follows having a total of 6 units (10%). Literature in English, Natural
Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities, Mandated Subjects, and NSTP components
have the same ranking (7.5); each have a total of 6 units (8%). The component
Computer Literacy ranked 11th having 3 units that corresponds to the least
percentage; 4 percent.

As compared to the CHED Memorandum No. 59 series that recommends 63

units for General Education courses for the teacher education program, the
component of curriculum for students taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education
Major in Mathematics(CTE-BSU) complied to the 63 units General Education
courses requirement(excluding NSTP and Physical Education;14 units).
It is deemed logical to allocate the most number of units to Social Sciences
component because it tackles about societal issues and concepts; the life application
of what we learn through education. It is supported by the idea that Social Sciences

provide a framework to look at content emerging from other subjects to see how
that content is used in society, for whose benefit.
(DHURU, S. Why social sciences are important. 2013.)
Professional Education
Table 2 presents the different courses that comprise the Professional
Education Component of Curriculum for Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in
Mathematics; with a total of 51 units (100%). As presented on the table, the
component Methods and Strategies ranked first with a total of 27 units having
percentage of 47%. The total 47% includes Principles of Teaching 1, Principles

of

Teaching 2, Assessment of Student Learning 1, Assessment of Student Learning 2,

Educational Technology 1, Educational Technology 2, Developmental Reading
and Curriculum Development; all the enumerated subjects were given 3 units
each. Theory and Concepts and Field Study components ranked second both have
a total of 12 units, with a percentage of 24%. Theory and concepts is compose of
Teaching Profession, Child and Adolescent Development, Facilitating Learning and
Social Dimensions with 3 units each; and Field Study components is compose of
Field Study 1, Field Study 2, Field Study 3 and Field Study 4 which are 1 unit each,
including Field Study 5 comprising 2 units and Field Study 6 comprising 6 units,
respectively. The third or the last on the ranking is the Special Topics component
which has a total of 3 units only that corresponds to 5 percent of ther total number of
units.
According to the CHED Memorandum Order Section 10, the component of
curriculum for students taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in
Mathematics complied with the 51 units Professional Education courses requirement.

Methods and Strategies component is appropriate to have the highest

allocation of units because these are the subjects that the principles and other
learned concepts for student teaching are integrated and applied. The allocation of
units is supported by the fact that the teacher serves as the prime mover of
educational wheel while the learner is the key participant in the learning process. As
learning is also affected by the environment; learning processes and methodologies
are needed for a smooth linkage among the three. (Principle of teaching I.
Introduction to the elements of teaching learning.)

Major Subjects (Mathematics)

Table 3 presents the different courses that complete the Major Subjects
Component of Curriculum for Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in
Mathematics; with a total of 60 units (100%). The component labeled Other
Mathematics ranked first with a total of 24 units having percentage of 40% as
presented by the table. The subjects Historical Foundations of Mathematics,
Business Mathematics, Problem Solving, Number Theory, Logic and Set Theory,
Discrete Math, Instrumentation and Technology in Math, Educational Research in
Mathematics each having 3 units made up the total of 24 units of the Other
Mathematics component. The remaining four components namely; Algebra,
Calculus, Statistics, and Geometry have the same ranking; each component has a

total of 9 units that corresponds to 15% of the total number of units of the major
subjects.
According to the CHED Memorandum Order Section 16, the component of
curriculum for students taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in
Mathematics complied with the 60 units Specialization or Major courses requirement.
The component labeled Other Mathematics ranked first because of its
practical use in real life situations. This idea is supported by the thought that
learning mathematics (especially mathematics subjects under the raked first
component) is of great value to professionals specially in future studies and
investigations they will undertake. (Principles and Strategies of Teaching. Nature and
Scope of Mathematics.)

Generalization
Base on the analysis of data presented in Table 4, there is significant
difference on the allocation of number of units among the components of curriculum
for students taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics.
General Education (77 units) component ranked first with a percentage of 41
percent, Major Subjects or Specialization(60 units) component ranked second with a
percentage of 32 percent and Professional Education (51 units) component ranked
third with a percentage of 27 percent.

The allocation of the highest number of units to the General Education

component is very significant because it functions as the foundation for future
student learning. It corroborates with the statements in an article, General education
courses are a vital part of a well-rounded education and are thus required by many
institutions. General education courses provide students with a more enriching
education, than they would otherwise obtain from just taking classes within their
majors. General education requirements provide students the opportunity to discover
their options, identify with different people, and meet the demands of an increasingly
interdisciplinary world. (SIGLEY, E. Why are general education courses important.
Education Space.2009)
