HSB4UI Independent Study

Phase 1: Topic Selection for Literature Review
Due date: Wednesday April 15, 2015
Value: 25 marks
1. State the topic to researched. Try to be specific. (2 marks)
The topic that I will be researching is white privilege, how it affects our society as a
whole, and how people of color and other minorities live as a result of it.
2. Proposed or working subheadings main categories that you have or think youll
find in the research. These could change as your review takes shape. (3 marks)
What is white privilege?
How does white privilege affect our society as a whole?
How does white privilege affect people of color and minorities?

3. What is it about this topic that interests you? Why did you choose this topic? (2
marks)
The reason I chose this topic is because it really interests me. I have always been
aware that white privilege exists but I have never really thought about it in depth, in
the way that this project will force me to constantly be aware of it. White privilege
affects me on a day to day basis and will continue to affect me for the rest of my
life. Learning more about white privilege and how it works will be essential for my
survival in this society.

4 . Write out three references to used in the literature review. Use proper
referencing format in APA style. Check Moodle or online sites for examples. For
each reference state the thesis and then give a 3-5 sentence summary of the article.
