LABORATORY GUIDELINES

1. Attendance is compulsory in order to complete the experimental work.

Students must replace the laboratory work which they miss any (with
a valid excuse). Please consult the demonstrator and lab assistant should
this problem arise.
2. Please ensure that you come early to the laboratory and read the
experiment manual in advance prior to the experiment.
3. Students are required to submit a brief laboratory report which contain
of the data collection during the experimental work and should contain
any calculation & discussion or relevant work prior to completing the
work.
The
brief
laboratory
report
must
be
endorsed
by
demonstrator/lecturer at the end of the laboratory work. This is
compulsory as the marks will be given and counted as part of the overall
assessment.
4. Students must always aware and abide to the laboratory regulations
while conducting the experiments to ensure your safety.
5. Students are required to submit individual formal laboratory report. The
FIRST formal laboratory report should be submitted by 14/4/2014.
The SECOND formal
laboratory report should be submitted by
19/5/2014. Students who fail to submit by this due date will get zero (o)
marks for the formal report 1. No extension on the due date will be
given.
6. For the FIRST formal laboratory report, students are given chance to
improve the report based on recommendation from the respective lecturer.
Those who attempt to improve the report should submit both the new
improved report together with the corrected report within a week. Failure
to resubmit the reports will lead to a deduction of 10 points.
7. For the SECOND formal laboratory report, students are reminded that
the report submitted shall be the final one and the grade is given based on
the report submitted. No chance is given to students on report
improvement mater.
REPORT WRITING GUIDELINE
1. Remember to used past tense to refer to everything you did during
experiment since you are talking about an event which happened in the
past and which has already ended by the time you start writing.
2. Avoid using first person (I or we) because person that conducted the
experiment was not really important compare to the procedure in the
experiment. For example, We set the timer can be re-written using
passive to become The timer was was set.
3. Put title on every graph that you plotted. X-axis and Y-axis of the graph
should be labeled properly so that the graph can be understood.

4.

In discussion section, besides of telling the obstacles that you faced, you
also need to explain the result(s) that you get from your experiment.
5. In reference part, please follow Final year project Guidebook by SKTM, u
may get a hardcopy from the main office.
6. The formal laboratory report should be typed using Tahoma font 11. The
report contains the following:
a. Cover page( including name matrix no., experiment topic, date of
experiment, date of submission)
b. Executive summary
c. Table of contents
d. Introduction & Objective
e. Theory /Literature Review
f. Procedure
Contain the process of how to do the experiment thoroughly.
include the necessary safety procedures
g. Result and Analysis
This section contains your lab experiment results. The results
can be presented in many forms such as tabulated data,
table, plotted graph, figure, picture, calculation, simulation,
etc.
For other type of results, you should give clear description on
it. Figure and picture should be started by using a numbering
(eg. Figure 1: temperature vs flow rate , Figure 2: COP of the
mechanical heat pump on the condenser water outlet
temperature)
Answer all questions inside your lab sheet. All results should
be clearly explained. You may ask yourself how and why
questions. Your ability to discuss your finding, making critical
argument, identify problems, and solving problem are going
to contribute higher credit towards your overall assessment.
h. Discussion/ recommendation
i. Conclusion
Explain what you have learned.
Conclusions are essentially a reflection of the stated objectives
j. references and appendices (follow Final year project Guidebook)

The brief and formal lab report handed in, should be your own work. You may
help each other, but absolutely no sharing of written report. If evidence suggests
cheating was involved, e.g. if two reports look very similar, I will investigate and
both students could receive zero marks for that lab reports. Any late submission
also will be penalized by deducting marks.
