Lesson title: The story of the Clearances

Lesson aims: to develop reading skills such as skimming, prediction, scanning
Materials: textbook, blackboard, laptop, projector, notebooks
Target vocabulary: Scottish history and culture
Lesson goals: By the end of the lesson, the Ss will be able to improve their pronunciation of
some particular terms and to understand the meanings of these new terms regarding Scottish
culture.
Assumptions: The Ss will assimilate without problems the new vocabulary.
Anticipated problems and solutions: The Ss may have difficulties understanding the text.
Possible solution: read the text and find the meaning of the words with the help of the teacher.
Stages:
Activity 1: Warm-up
Aim:
- To stimulate imagination, curiosity and enables the students to get ready for the lesson
- To help Ss become focused prior to participating in a structured group
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
Timing: 10 minutes
Materials: laptop, projector, notebooks
Organization: class work
Procedure:
- The T checks who is missing
- The Ss hand in the assignment (A descriptive composition)
- The T will put a game on the laptop and projector named Lets explore the world!
- The game represents different places on Earth and the students must guess where those
places are on the map
Activity 2: Introduction
Aim: to introduce the topic to the class
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, Ss-Ss
Timing: 10 minutes
Organization: group work

Materials: worksheets, blackboard


Procedure:
- The T divides the class in groups of four and gives each group Worksheet 1 Scotland quiz
- Ss must try to answer the questions choosing the correct answer
- The T, together with the entire class, checks the answers
- The T will show the Ss images of Scotlands national symbols and will give information
regarding Scotland
- The T will make a diagram on the blackboard with vocabulary regarding Scotland
Activity 3: Presentation
Aim: - To learn more about Scotland and its history
- To learn vocabulary related to this subject
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
Timing: 20 minutes
Organization: class work,
Materials: books, notebooks, blackboard
Procedure:
- The Ss read the text and translate it
- The T explains any problem words to the whole class
- The Ss add significant words to the diagram
Activity 4: Fixation of knowledge
Aim: to practice the new information
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-Ss, Ss-T
Timing: 8 minutes
Organization: pair work
Materials: book, notebooks
Procedure:
- The T asks the Ss to look at exercise 7a, page 85
- The Ss, in groups of two, must choose the correct answer
- The T goes through the answers with the whole class
Activity 5: Homework
Aim: to reinforce what was done in class
Interaction: T-Ss
Timing: 2 minutes

Materials: books, notebooks, blackboard
Procedure: The T gives the Ss the homework ex. 7c, page 85, where they have to answer the
questions relating to the text
