Exercise 2 Normal and Continuous Distributions

1. A sample of 400 units is taken from a certain production. The mean weight is 151 kg and the
standard deviation is 15 kg. The production follows the Normal distribution. Calculate the
number of units in the sample with the following weights
a) Between 120 and 150 kg.
b) Greater than 185 kg.
c) Less than 140 kg.
2. The distribution of the concentration of a certain pollutant in a lake is known to be Normally
distributed ( = 21.37, 2 = 0.16).
a) Let X denote the concentration of the pollutant in a random sample taken from the lake.
Find P ( X > 22.07).
b) Find the value of X that is exceeded with a probability of 0.75.
c) Suppose that 15 random samples are taken. Let Y equal the number of these samples with
concentration less than 20.857. Find P (Y 2).
3. Let X equal the flow in a certain river. Assuming that the distribution of X is N (3315, 5752), find
a) P (2584.75 X 4390.25)
b) P (2619.25 X 3642.75)
c) P (3119.50 X 3579.50)
d) Find the flow which is exceeded with a probability of 0.90.

4. The percentage of people exposed to certain bacteria who become ill is 20%. Assume that people
are independent. Assume that 1000 people are exposed to the bacteria. Approximate each of the
following:
(a) The probability that more than 225 people become ill
(b) The probability that between 175 and 225 people become ill
(c) The value such that the probability that the proportion of people who become ill exceeds that
value is 0.01

Poisson random variable with a mean of 1000. What is the probability that 10 squared
centimeters of dust contains more than 10,000 particles?

6. Suppose that the time interval between thunderstorms in a humid region has an exponential
distribution with parameter = 0.2 day-1.
(a) What is the mean and standard deviation of the time between thunderstorms?
(b) What is the probability that the interval between thunderstorms is less than two days?
(c) Determine the time interval such that the probability that this time interval is not exceeded is
equal to 0.10.

7. Annual rainfall depth in a given city is Log-Normally distributed with parameters = 0.677 and
= 2.27.
(a) Calculate the mean and variance of the rainfall depth.
(b) What is the probability that the annual rainfall depth is greater than 20 mm?
(c) What is the probability that the annual rainfall depth is between 10 and 20 mm?
(d) What rainfall depth is exceeded 10% of the years?
8. Annual flow at a certain gauging station on a river has a Gumbel distribution with parameters =
40 Million m3 and = 10 Million m3.
(a) Calculate the mean and variance of the flow at that station.
(b) Calculate the probability of the annual flow being less than 20 Million m3.
(c) Calculate the probability that the flow is greater than 60 Million m3 given that it is greater
than the mean flow.
(d) If drought in this area occurs when the flow is in the lower 20% probability region, calculate
the critical value of flow.
