compromising on the aesthetic, social and cultural factors. He also works to educate the masons/labourers involved in the
process of construction. He believes that if the architect simplifies the technique, the work becomes faster, affordable and
the mason is able to learn and reuse the process again independently. Also if a certain technique needs to be implemented
on a large scale, it needs to be as simple as possible. He believes that for a person to be able to identify with his space the
space should first have a strong identity and that it should consequently bring out the user's identity. Hence, social identity
is as important as the economic value of the building. Some of his notable projects are The Rishi Samskruti Vidya Kendra
(RSVK) at Boduvlasa in Vishakapatnam district and he has also designed and built the buildings for the Department of
Architecture and the extension of the academic wing of the Dept. of Geo-engineering in the Andhra University campus.

4. Srinivas Murthy
Srinivas Murthy B. Arch (SPA, Delhi). He did his under graduate training with Ar. Anil
Laul, at the Anangpur Building Centre. After graduation he came back to his home-town
in Visakhapatnam. He took up a few architectural and interior design commissions in
Vizag. As he began to diversify, he set up office in Delhi and Mumbai. Since then, SMG
Designs has taken up various government and private commissions.
He is also involved in heritage conservation issues and is the Convener of the Vizag
chapter of The India National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
Architect Srinivas sees appropriate technologies as a means and not the final solution to
developing a sustainable habitat. Moreover, he believes that the role of an architect is
to design the spaces intelligently at the planning stage itself. A lot of energy gets saved
only by evolving an efficient design. He ensures adequate natural light and ventilation
in all his projects. In all his projects he tries to convince the clients to uses these techniques. Every year he constructs one
building entirely using cost-effective technologies without charging a fee for consultation. One of most remarkable project
by the Architect is The Andhra University English Medium School (AUEM), Vishakapatnam district.

5. Ranjit Sinha
Ranjit Sinha, an electrical engineer from IT-BHU, continues in his mission to improve the
quality of life in the neglected villages of Bihar through varied multi-disciplinary
approaches, often unconventional. He took up new challenges, in addition to his
existing work in fields as varied as Roofing for the Roofless Millions, educating rural
children to compete with their more privileged urban counterparts across the country,
creating employment opportunities for rural women, issues of empowerment, and
fighting corruption in his much maligned state and is also actively involved in social
work in his ancestral village home in Tilothu where he lives with his wife and helps her
run a 49 years old voluntary organization, Tilothu Mahila Mandal. It takes up all the
time of the couple. Among the multiple activities in the social sector, his time is mostly
taken up implementing the original mandate of the building centre movement, and
working on rationalizing costs in civil engineering and training of construction workers
in the use of cost-effective civil engineering in his beloved TMM Nirmii Kendra at Indrapuri, Rohtas, Bihar.
A passionate advocate of housing for the poor, his team at the nirmiti kendra has no hesitation in taking up such challenges
and successfully completing projects using the best and most cost-effective technologies developed by Indias premier
research bodies, engineering colleges, and individuals like Laurie Baker and Ray Meeker. His present concerns are waste
water and solid waste management in urban housing, energy conservation in construction projects and improving habitat
with the best of urban amenities for rural middle class. Some of his notable projects are Eye Hospital at Tilothu, Rohtas
Bihar, Housing under Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana for 1906 slum dwelling families in Jharkhand, Shelter Firsts Vipin
Vihar, a project for Rural Middle Class with all urban amenities, Rural Marketing Complexes.

6. Shobhana Choudhury
The Senior Project Manager, and the unnamed CEO of the Nirmiti Kendra (run by Tilothu
Mahila Mandal at Indrapuri in the backward district of Rohtas in Bihar), Shobhana
Choudhury is the anti-thesisof the image of a project manager conceived by the
Government of India. She defies every conventional thinking and her business model in
running the building centre is so original, its successis sometimes incomprehensible to a
practicing engineer or manager. Yet she has ensured that unlike most otherbuilding
centres, hers has never ceased operating, never been short of work, never laid off
personnel, never run into unsustainabilty, never thought of giving up.
Picking up women behind purdahs from both Hindu and Muslim communities, she has
trained them into skilled construction workers producing construction components,
working as masons, machine operators, and mechanics. In doing so she has, over the last
16 years, empowered hundreds of women now earning well and priding themselves as having moved their families out of
the BPL list. Her man-management is the key to her success and that of the building centre.
She conveys the feeling that having missed out on engineering and higher education for family reasons, she needs to make
up in learning and teaching hands-on. In her training programmes, she prefers on-the-job training rather than classroom
lectures. Working in a rural, backward ambience with little support from the government, she has steered the building
centre into sustainability from day one, by following the written technical data available from HSMI and others to the dot,
and setting up efficient production systems for different products using jugar in the absence of resources.
Her forte is experimentation, using earth blocks, interlocking and conventional, ferrocement products of all kinds, filler slab,
rat-trap bond and RCC joineries. In using this mix she is able to reduce costs so that the poor are able to afford sustainable
housing.

8. Ashok B Lall
Ashok B Lall Architects is an architectural firm established in the year 1980. The firm comprises of team of architects and
engineers led by Mr. Ashok B Lall.
The firm believes that architecture should not only serve the building design solution but should focus on larger benefits.
Professionals have a dual responsibility of serving in the best possible way the legitimate need of the client and equally see
that the means and ends of the building design solutions proposed also serve a larger beneficial purpose. They believe that
creative practice of architecture would seek to converge this duality into a unity.
The firm does not espouse any style or aesthetic and each design is a process of discovery where solutions are found
appropriate to the project at hand. The process is driven by three guiding principles:
Inclusion of the client and user groups at all stages of the project by appropriately structured consultation.
Search for simplicity and economy of means.
Prioritising selection of design strategies and technologies in favour of sustainability and energy conservation.
They believe that architecture should be an offering of beauty and joy that enhances the cultural milieu, of the
place and of its people, where it is practiced.
Their works have been appreciated all over the country and has received numerous awards for their innovative approach in

40. R.K.Remesh
Inspired by the works of Architect Laurie Baker R.K. Remesh started his career with a
determination to work on cost effective houses for the poor along with normal practice.
The accidental meeting with a tile manufacturer and entrepreneur provided an opening
for experimenting with structural terracotta blocks for reducing the cost of construction.
Two systems were developed using terracotta blocks and the third system was developed using stabilized earth blocks for a
self help housing system. All these systems were put to use by building several dwelling units and the experiences of the
occupants, giving them opportunity for future modifications. The parabolic shell system is made without using steel at all
thereby reducing the cost of construction to almost half the cost of conventional conception parabolic shell construction
system. The second system developed provides a type of construction acceptable to all categories of people ranging from
slum dwellers to executives and tycoons. Even now several people are building this type of house at various locations with
several advantages.
He has over four decades of experience in the field of architecture and is practicing in his own consultancy firm which has
handled hundreds of major projects including public buildings, parks, tourism projects, stadium, in addition to several
residential buildings, and complexes. The non-profit development works of cost effective houses are supported by the
professional practices. The current projects under development is the do it yourself model dwelling units with self
supporting in energy and water management.
He is also the managing director of Brick Bond Shelters Private Limited, a foundation for research and development for cost
effective systems of construction. He is also executive director of Bhavanam society, a guidance centre for cost effective
houses sponsored by the corporation of Calicut. This centre provides training for self-help and mutual help housing projects
for economically weaker section. This firm is the first ISO certified architects firm in India. Some of his notable projects

Joe Madiath, studied English literature at the University of Madras, Chennai. There, he founded the Young Students'
Movement for Development (YSMD). During this time, he also cycled solo across India, gaining insight into the plight of the
poor.
In 1971, Madiath led 400 YSMD volunteers to West Bengal to manage relief camps for refugees from the Bangladesh
liberation war. Witnessing the devastation of the 1971 Orissa cyclone, and realizing the comparatively little attention
received by the disaster victims, Madiath and a small group of volunteers shifted their attention there. Once their relief
efforts were completed, Madiath and a few colleagues from the YSMD decided to stay in Orissa to work as development
activists. On invitation from the district authorities, they moved to Ganjam district in 1976 to begin work with Adivasi
communities. Madiath founded Gram Vikas in 1979. He is currently the Executive Director of Gram Vikas Orissa and since
then he has been working for the development of the villages in the area of community health, education, livelihoods,
livelihood enabling infrastructure, renewable energy, and water and sanitation. Some of his notable works include
Construction of over 54000 biogas plants in Odisha, Over 10,000 Ha of land brought under social forestry and

Samathuvapuram was built in Kuthambakkam. The concept was later promoted and implemented by the Tamilnadu
government and over 150 such villages came up all over the State.
He is deeply influenced by Gandhian philosophy and believes that the country needs production by the masses and not
mass production. He has been working for self-reliance in the village through entrepreneurship and self-governance. He
promoted the use of appropriate technologies in the construction of the housing units and also trained the villagers so that
they can use these technologies when they would want to extend or do some more construction. He founded the Trust for
Village Self Governance (TVSG) in 2001 to support the village panchayat in mobilizing resources other than government
grants. It was started with the goal of promoting village based, self- sustaining, self- governing economic development,
panchayat to panchayat sharing of best practices about building a land/ agriculture based village economy and the creation
of role model panchayat to make them truly self- governing institutions as envisaged in the 73rd constitutional
amendment. His famous project is Samathuvapuram in Kuthambakkam and has also received Ashoka fellowship award.
